Cultic is fucking dope and the best shooter I've played in a long long time. It's dirt cheap too all things considered. It's not perfect but for a game that one fucking autist make entirely himself it's a miracle.

Sounds like a you problem. Not even trying to be an asshole, you're either depressed or just grew out of gaming. The industry is unironically in a better place than it ever has been. Older console games are more accessible than ever through emulation, tons of classic pc games are getting modern ports, the AA and indie scenes are larger than ever. Even if you think 99.9% of games released are shit nowadays you can always play the classics + the 0.01% of good new releases.Excuse me, at least call me old fag rather than hipster. But at least for me it's been years since any game came out I had actual hype for, while a lot of good game series I follow seemingly get gutted as more sequels are churned out.
Cultic is not "just more blood". It superficially borrows some things from Blood. Aside from the cultists, mid 1900s setting, and the fact you can throw dynamite there is very little in common. Cultic has a completely different level design, atmosphere, movement, enemy variety, and combat. Even the dynamite functions very differently from Blood, the only similarity being they both have some form of dynamite.Like what's the point of endlessly repeating a dead genre without making any new twist on it? No interesting weapons, enemies, story or design, at best a better AI.
If you want Blood just play Blood.
Dusk is so fucking great. I've been replaying it and almost every time I start a level I think "Oh fuck yeah I remember this level, it's great." Every single level is unique and able to stand out, that's genuinely incredible when you have 30ish levels.Dusk, Turbo Overkill, Amid Evil, and Cultic are truly some of the finest shooting games I’ve played within the last 5 years. Prodeus was also very good and has an awesome level editor.
Take that back. Cancer Mouse is hilarious.neither are the characters in his world - at least in my opinion.
This is the unofficial boomer shooter thread, friend. Post away.Cultic is my favorite of the neo-boomer shooters owing to its superb combat mechanics. The slick sprite work and animations together with crunchy sound effects makes every attack and kill feel satisfyingly kinetic in a way that even many high-budget modern games fail to capture. Smaller features like gun wielding enemies having an audio cue before they fire and the easy to execute yet deep movement system all convince me that the lone dev has a very intimate understanding of shooters in addition to being talented as hell.
Sadly, my main complaint with its campaign is the same one I had with Dusk: the level design really doesn't challenge you much. In both games you hardly ever get flanked by enemies, so you're free to sit back and play defensively with minimal risk to yourself. In Cultic, you can even snipe a lot of the more problematic enemies from outside their detection range, rendering them utterly toothless. Everyone likes to complain about the monster closets in Doom, but they did serve a function, and that's to keep you from getting comfortable parking your ass in a doorway and letting the enemies come to you. It's only in the arcade mode that Cultic's enemy roster and combat mechanics can truly shine, and it's a devilishly hard challenge far beyond anything in the campaign.
Oh, right, I guess this is a thread about Civvie. The video was good and his enthusiasm is contagious when he's really into the game. I did snigger at his weak head shooting skills though.
I can now chip in to say, fucking buy Cultic. It's short and sweet enough that I can almost guarantee that you'll feel no guilt or regret whatsoever for having sunk the few hours into it to complete it.Cultic looked pretty sweet, but I'm at that point with my backlog where I'd feel kinda guilty buying a new game right now…
The game also needed more set pieces. The only two cases I can think of are the Church (that was probably the only time the game felt exciting, but the level itself felt completely random), and when the Asylum burned down (that had no interesting gameplay effects). Most of the game is trecking through tunnels or in the wild.Cultic is one of those games where if you're not absolute dog shit at boomer shooters then it's too easy and you have to play on the hardest difficulty. And when you do that that's when the ambushes and constant sniping gets in the way of the fun. Dammed if you do and dammed if you don't.
I think it needs more enemy variety and the weapon bench is a decent idea but it comes at the expense of most your weapons feeling too weak when you get them.
Edit: the shotty is criminally underpowered until you upgrade the fuck out of it.
Also, maybe a nitpick, the soundtrack is very generic.
The dev kind of painted himself in a corner in a way. If you're going to blatantly homage something like Blood then you have to be at that same level of quality and Blood is just a masterpiece of boomer shooters.
Do I think it's bad? No. I just think it needs some more enemy and gameplay variety. All of which can be fixed in the 2nd episode.
Really? I did just fine without upgraiding the launcher or the stenFunny, I was just about to reply. I just beat Cultic on the 2nd to hardest difficulty.
The problem with snipers just ramps up. You do get some decent enemy variety later with the spongey enemy with the flamethrower where the flamethrower isn't keybinded for some reason so you have to use the weapon wheel to select it.
To be fair, the dev did manage to make every single weapon worth a god damn just like Blood. You will still use the pistol for sniping and carefully setting off bear traps and dynamite traps while conserving ammo.
Another thing that pissed me off was the way dynamite and molotov's were handled. It's an interesting idea that you need to light them first before throwing but ultimately it just made using the items more tedious to use. Plus it was pointless because there's already a dedicated button to throwing a stick of unlit dynamite.
Overall, it's fine. But it felt like the dev learned all the wrong lessons from Blood when played on Extra Crispy.
The end boss would be easy if not for the constantly spawning cultists that you NEED to snipe. And I couldn't find any kind of cover. You just need to keep moving and hope you get rid of them. Upgrading the Sten and add the alt fire for the grenade launcher is MANDATORY for the final boss.
You can just use the flame thrower on the boss itself and whatever weapons you like on the spawning cultists. I don't disagree that the sniping is off the charts for a lot of sections but if you move quickly and play like you've just huffed some speed you can dodge almost everything thrown at you since none of it is hit scan that I'm aware of.Funny, I was just about to reply. I liked Dusk more. And I had 50 rounds of the flamethrower for the boss but it wasn't enough. It was frankly dumb luck that I quickly killed some cultists and whaled on the boss before more could spawn in.You can just use the flame thrower on the boss itself and whatever weapons you like on the spawning cultists. Also, isn't there a quick molotov/dynamite button?
Not trying to be the CDF here but I really liked the game and had more fun playing it than 99% of the shit that's been released recently. SIGNALIS was fun initially but it's started to drag on me and the cool theme and art style can only hide its gameplay issues for so long...
Cancer Mouse is hilarious because he's basically the fuzzy radioactive personification of this very site and other shitposting forums.Take that back. Cancer Mouse is hilarious.
Cancer Mouse is the best character on the channel, possibly including Civvie himself.Cancer Mouse is hilarious because he's basically the fuzzy radioactive personification of this very site and other shitposting forums.
CM: "We're gonna talk about stranger danger.... and white genocide!"
CV11: "God DAMN it Cancer Mouse! Get the FUCK out of here! You're not bringing that bullshit on my show!"
Nobody should tell him that though because if he knows he'll try to deprive his audience of Cancer Mouse appearances just to spite them.
