I usually just lurk here, but I since my hobby is historical dressmaking I can maybe add something to the conversation.
First of all, the cost; yes, it is an expensive hobby. Personally I think it is a good idea to use only natural fibres since those were available even though synthetics would be cheaper I just think they also look cheap. Cotton fabric can be quite cheap though and make for some nice dresses.

Second: corsets. I can of course only speak from personal experience but my corsets are all made after historical patterns and appropriate to the time period of whatever piece I am wearing. I have spent full days in summer and winter in a corset and think it is quite a neat support garment (I don't tight lace). My organs are still all in the right spot too. I have even done ice skating, cricket, sledding and tennis in a corset and it lets you move just fine. Just my two cents. If you want to know more I would be happy to answer any questions you may have if it's okay with the mods.

It feels like you're wearing a snug undershirt that ends just above your nipples that supports your back and stomach. Or maybe imagine a broad bandage on your torso. It really isn't uncomfortable at all since it is fitted to your measurements.
 
Please don't merge or shuffle this thread somewhere else. It's been a fun read and the refocusing on dressmaking, Victoriana, and other topics has been highly entertaining.

I think there were some updates in the general Munchies thread, and I hope those posters will put them in here. This forum is big enough to hold one extra thread. We've got lots of interesting people chit-chatting and I think that would get lost if we merged or moved somewhere else.

@Munchie_Minder - Sergers are really finicky. I concur with AbraCadaver up above - try a different thread to see if that stops the breakage.

Yeah sure
This is the latest outfit I made. A summer dress circa 1903 so early Edwardian era. It is machine sewn and has three petticoats under it to keep the shape. All made out of cotton and St. Gall embroidery (broderie anglasise).

That's lovely! I guess we should all thank Munchie Christine for her contribution here. This is a great little thread. I'm learning so much. Hell, it's in the Beauty Parlour and it's regarding sewing and historical fashion. I don't mind keeping her around. Bonus points if Christine shows back up at some point just for funsies.

As for being "positively wasting", her last selfie posted 6 days ago shows her looking like as much of a dumpy double-chinned bag of potatoes as usual, so not sure who she thinks she's fooling with that one.
