I usually just lurk here, but I since my hobby is historical dressmaking I can maybe add something to the conversation.
First of all, the cost; yes, it is an expensive hobby. Personally I think it is a good idea to use only natural fibres since those were available even though synthetics would be cheaper I just think they also look cheap. Cotton fabric can be quite cheap though and make for some nice dresses.
Second: corsets. I can of course only speak from personal experience but my corsets are all made after historical patterns and appropriate to the time period of whatever piece I am wearing. I have spent full days in summer and winter in a corset and think it is quite a neat support garment (I don't tight lace). My organs are still all in the right spot too. I have even done ice skating, cricket, sledding and tennis in a corset and it lets you move just fine. Just my two cents.
