I wouldn't fault him for a "you deserve to live a normal life" ending but as things stand I don't see any way it could be executed properly. The whole thing feels like a complete tonal whiplash.

Well alrighty then.
I am running on pure, unleaded copium that this is either an illusion or a temporary depowering, somehow.

Because "You can keep dreaming" be damned, did Pochita forget that Denji was, completely independant of his existence, both in massive debt to the Yakuza and soon to die of a fatal heart illness?

I might be fucking retarded here, but with the way pochita's erasure powers work, wouldn't Denji have just gotten "reset" to the current point in a timeline where pochita never existed? Erasing Ears didn't erase hearing or all the things people invented that go in your ear, like q-tips. Erasing death didn't make people immortal, it just made them "conscious" while being digested by bugs(isn't this just another form of afterlife being created, in practice?)
So there's a real chance he's basically been transplanted to a timeline where his life still went forward without pochita, and he basically gets to skip all the suffering this time.

Perhaps he wasn't being sent to kill dangerous devils because he never had pochita, and the yakuza still got oneshotted by Zombie, leaving him up there in his shack with no debt. There's a million ways he could write the ending while still making it satisfying or providing a setup to Pt. 3 or a sequel series.

At this point I just have absolutely no idea. Maybe Fujimoto had an idea and decided to make a spur of the moment reversal of his decision to end the story. Maybe he wanted to do a sex scene, was told no by his editors, threatened to end the series if he couldn't and got what he wanted by playing a game of chicken. Maybe this whole thing was a 24 hour op. No possibility is off the table with this guy.

Given his love of Vanilla Sky, I am increasingly worried about that actually fucking happening.
As for Fire Punch, the insanity works as it is what I counts as a more ‘symbolic’ story. In that if you read it as a typically written story it just doesn’t follow the rules at all. But if you read it as a more abstract piece of art where the characters we follow aren’t necessarily people, but rather embodiments of concepts, it can be one of the greatest mangas ever made if it vibes with you in particular.
Chainsaw Man is similar to that, however it is much more typical in how our characters are actually characters.
Either way, if he somehow pulls this off I’ll be very impressed because I still don’t know he could.

I'm really really split on this because on one hand it would be an incredibly ballsy way to end the manga but on the other hand I can't see many people showing up for Fujimoto's next manga if he does this.

Eight years is a long time to get invested in something only for it to end with "psych! Nothing gets resolved and all plot points end on a cliffhanger! Fuck you!"

My absolutely retarded theory is contingent upon the “Denji is dreaming theory”.
If it turns out Denji is dreaming, possibly as he dies, the entire series is his reflection on his own life. Makima could be his mother, Power and Aki could be his siblings or relatives, the people he worked with could be friends he had in life, Asa his gf, and Pochita could literally be his dog. Throughout the whole series he’s learning from the ground up how to be a human being, loving and suffering and losing and gaining, but each time he grows a bit as a person and learns these lessons.
I’m just talking out my ass, I’m coping and sneeding, we just have to wait and see what this completely nuts man does next.

I just binge read the part 2 to see the shitshow. I liked it for the most part. I like how Fujimoto always write the most miserable characters he can think of.
Denji is literally a nig, he can't stop acting on his impulses even when he knows it will fuck him later. He works full-time to have a girl, and the only thing he achieves is being masturbated in an alley by a demon femcel. Everyone is having the most basic, dumb objectives ever, and they are all worthless humans. It's a pretty funny nihilistic view of the world, everyone is broken, there's sects, corrupted governments, you can die anytime, it's refreshing to read than instead of another comfy slice of life/romance harem isekai story.
This end looks bad though. Doing such a retcon of everything is absolutely dumb. I don't care about how some plotlines stays unresolved, but I really don't like that last chapter.

No, I'm the retard here. I assumed because it went back to the shack that we were getting a rewind situation, because it entirely skipped my mind that Fujimoto might pull an EVA Rebuild 4 and shit us into an alternate timeline where the characters all got new histories we never got to see.

Besides, the fatal heart disease thing. The Yakuza could have been skipped by that, but new timeline Denji would need some good healthcare.

Eh, if we get Reze and/or Nayuta back, I'll take it. Otherwise, I call for Kyoto Animation Studios 2.0: Agni edition.

I know, I'm just taking my shot in the dark. Nothing's off limits with Fujimoto, but I hope he decides to give us something satisfying, whatever he does.

I just want my stupid, impulsive dog boy to get a happy ending, if it's a series ending, or an interesting hook if it's leading to a part 3.

You know what would be funny, if the next chapter is actually the series finale and it's just 20 pages of the cabin with no changes whatsoever.

Just the cabin for all 20 pages

It is funny to me when there’s a chimp-out from manga fans because of something crazy like this. On Xitter and Reddit it’s just madness, great time.
Reminds me of all the fun discourse of how AOT ended 5 years ago, although tbf I don't think the ending will be as bad as AOT's to the point people are making their own fan made endings like AOT Requirem.

psych! Nothing gets resolved and all plot points end on a cliffhanger
We got resolutions to the major plot threads though. at least all the ones in pt. 2, and vague allusions to Denji feeling bad about not going to look for Power.

Fire Devil stuff: just wanted Denji to choose between Normal Life and Being Chainsaw. Did literally everything to achieve this.
Asa/Yoru stuff: Asa had a shit upbringing, but she was just a normal girl, Yoru had no connection to her backstory. The bird really was just a bird. All the fan theories were wrong.
Asa and Yoru have irreconcilable moral differences.(may get wrapped up next chapter), but their arc ended when Yoru basically said "dude im a devil lmao idc about your morality" (imo this reflects irl failed relationships/friendships)
Control Devil stuff: Nayuta is literally dead. Barem killed her for the Fire Devil to traumatize denji, she's not coming back. Devilman reference.
Death/Prophecy stuff: Death was just pretending to be famine devil, there was nothing deeper going on. Gets eaten by pochita unceremoniously. Denji-Man is the King Of Terror and the prophecy came true, the world ended.
Part 1 stuff: Makima was just a schizo, the followers of Pochita aren't really angels. Denji feels vaguely bad about not looking for Power but he wants to goon, so fuck it lmao. Quanxi is still around. Kishibe probably fucked off. Reze got ignored. lol.

What else has got to be wrapped up? The only thing I'd want more clarity on is Asa/Yoru's relationship but that could get resolved in literally one page(Asa: "fuck you lmao but thank you for teaching me to be more selfish" Yoru: "dude I'm a NIGGER DEVIL lmao")'

Oh, I guess the "devils hear a chainsaw when they're born" thing never got explained but I always figured that would never be explained and was more of a facet of Chainsawman always fighting in Hell before he met Denji so devils would hear him as they spawned in.

Finding or at least trying to find the blood devil would be nice.
we got a few panels of Denji moping over Power, but he wanted to chase tail/fight/be chainsaw man instead.

Also what happened to Asa/Your after the timeline shifted. And Denji. And everyone else.
Ideally we find out next week. Can't really see Fuji just straight up ignoring this.

I am running on pure, unleaded copium that this is either an illusion or a temporary depowering, somehow.
My immediate thought was that it's a fake-out, since we saw him about to get punched, not eaten, and the thing that punched him was hanging out with what looks like Apollyon's locusts (who have been getting a bit of a build-up but haven't done anything special yet), which are associated with the horsemen but their whole job is to torture mankind for a few months in the apocalypse. Or something. I get most of my biblical information from Binding of Isaac. They're different from the Plague locusts anyway, sort of.
So if that was an aspect of Apollyon/Abbadon/Whatever, a member of the Plague King gang* punching him into an illusion where he immediately sees his best friend die makes sense as a form of torment. My bet is he's just gonna be trapped in a flute episode for a while.

*I googled it and apparently he does belong to a mythical trinity along with Termagaunt and Muhammad (lol) so that fits him showing up with two other blob-heads in addition to the locusts. Though obviously they'd all be rendered as the [Something] Devil, which is no problems since big name princes of hell all have like fifty different things Fujimoto can call them the devil of.

Edit: also, protagonists can't be eaten by foes that haven't gotten a name yet, let alone off-screen. That's a rule, everybody knows that.
