CBS-Viacom Merger - Will Star Trek be finally under one roof?

After splitting apart in 2006, CBS and Viacom, who both remain sister companies owned by Sumner and Shari Redstone, figure to re-merge to compete in a ever changing landscape. Paramount's television assets went to CBS as a result of the split.

For geek culture, this would finally bring the film and tv rights to Star Trek back under one roof. For movie buffs, CBS All Access could take advantage of its streaming service by bring Paramount’s film library to their service for its user to fall back on.

Well, we can finally get that Star Trek/Spongebob crossover we've been clamoring for.

Hopefully we don't see them try to Woke their old sitcoms. The last thing we need is a woke versions of The Andy Griffith Show and Green Acres

Basically the only reason anybody gives any fucks about this is Star Trek.
That’s exactly what this takeaway will be, like how X-Men was for Disney-Fox. Keep in mind, they’re both subsidiaries of National Amusements, which Shari and Summer Redstone use through to control both companies.

Apparently, when CBS split from Viacom in 2006, Paramount’s tv assets (including Star Trek) went to CBS while Paramount keep all of the film assets. That probably explain why the franchise timelines and management are a mess right now.

It could make Disney and Netflix a little nervous regarding content catalogs. CBS could take advantage of its streaming service by providing its users with Paramount’s film library, which would excite people to be draw to watch their films instead of watching the shows. Think about it, Paramount’s got a impressive film library for them to use.

I'd copypaste the explanation but everybody is a fag and just runs their goddamn mouth on youtube videos instead of spreading entertainment gossip online via text like respectable nerds, but yeah apparently that's a big part of why Trek got so fucked from Flaretrek onwards.

Bob Bakish, who’s Viacom’s CEO, is supposed to lead the combined company since he’s close with Redstone. I think he’ll put the old Paramount tv assets back into Paramount, effectively getting them control over the franchise. I could imagine they’ll ignore Discovery when and if they have the merger happen.

CBS doesn’t have a actual CEO right now since Les Moonves was ousted for sexual misconduct. He, whom I heard was the one to pushed hard for Discovery, had a fallout with the Redstones, hence why the merger last year fell apart.

We just got the first black female 007 and woke remakes coming out the wazoo. I would be surprised if they didn't announce they were making Woke Acres or even a reboot/spin-off of Beverly Hillbillies titled "Hooterville Begpackers", about a small group of trustafarians who lose their credit cards and are forced to move into to the Clampetts' old cabin and have to deal with the horrors of living without tablets or soy-based foods (possum vittles is all you gonna get in Hooterville) in a stereo-typically "bigoted" and MAGA-loving community of backwater bumpkins who make life hell for these rich Beverly Hills brats on a daily basis... Wait... that actually sounds a little funny.

I remember thinking the split was dumb in the first place, way back in the day. I am all for stitching them back together, its not Fox/Disney, there isn't suddenly going to be less TV or film releases because these two entities which never compete with each other are once again under one roof.

ironic, isn't it. Star Trek is uniting humanity under one banner and yet it couldn't unite itself.

Ok, this might be a stupid question, but what Star Trek related projects/things aren't happening because the companies have been separated?

It has to do with the split between CBS and Viacom in 2006. CBS holds the television rights since Paramount’s Original tv assets went to CBS while the film assets remain at Paramount.

Right now, it seems like the films aren’t happening because of Beyond underperforming and the proposed forth film having script problems. I think the Discovery people in charge of it don’t want Paramount to do anything film wise like Tarantino’s proposed R-rated Star Trek movie.

New poll. Feel free to offer me poll suggestions for this thread.

Also, this thread doesn’t have to be about Star Trek as it could also be about Paramount and MTV as well.

I voted "nothing would happen" but I really feel like we'd just get the worst parts of nutrek combined, like a legit TOS reboot series where every episode is a mini action film without any philosophical dilemmas or a whole movie about Michael Burnham.

Edit: let's call it "The Worst of Both Worlds"
