Ha ha ha! A problem with Apu? Apu is a great guy. Like you said, the actual stereotype has gotten WORSE for Indians since well after Apu's time.
What's funny is, he seems to be a bit hated in India too. A place where The Simpsons isn't even that known. He's essentially treated like the equivalent of an Indian soyboy there, some people were only surprised that he wasn't Bengali (the biggest beta male & Karen chamber of India), but Telugu (The place where RRR came from).
You're right to a point, but it wasn't this but the death of Fentanyl Floyd that made that kind of behavior skyrocket. Did you know that Eskimo Pies changed their product name in response to the nog riots? As if that makes any sense.
funny thing is he didnt even want apu gone. just done by a different actor and be less stereotypical overall. show removed him instead and dude just went "that's worse"

How was Apu even stereotypical? He had few moments like any Simpsons' character but those were just a part of a complex comedic side character. He was an immigrant, an overly hard worker, a cheater both in business and personal life, a family man, a hindu, a vagan, a regular victim of crime and yes an indian.
I feel the same way about Ghandi from Clone High.
Women actually threw themselves at him until his mother (a realistically depicted Bengali Karen) came to visit and remind him of his arranged marriage, at which point he and his arranged fiancée decided to give it a shot and if they didn't enjoy that particular aspect of their heritage, divorce. But, they wound up getting along great and being a communicative modern couple that also happened to have a large family just like their parents wanted.
I am usually pretty good at remembering where I was mentally as a kid and being able to put myself back in those shoes for a bit to decide how I would feel about something through that old perspective. But that shit is impossible to do here.
