Captain Marvel is the weakest part of her own film. Starts as a sarcastic, powerful hero, ends as a sarcastic, stronger hero. No stakes or danger to any of her fights.

The lack of a character arc is especially jarring. She has the similar smug and patronising personality as Thor did, but there it was a character flaw to be overcome whereas Carol is apparently empowered by it?

Her character throwing a strop about being stopped from racing was funny. "Everyone else does it!" she shrieks, being the only person to have somehow flipped and crashed her vehicle.

I'm not gonna see this until it's on home media, and I don't know if that'll be before End Game. Could someone please tell me what we know/learn/see in this which seems like it'll be something I'd "need to know" ?

Not really, there is several scenes where they insert irrelevant backstory to things from previous movies, there is one post credit scene that's probably from endgame
of the avengers having the pager and Carol shows up asking for Fury

That's a pretty big "if" considering that we don't even have real numbers from the opening weekend yet. I was a little more optimistic about CM's performance than some people here, but the $300 mil foreign opening is pretty fucking suspicious.
Overseas actuals have come back at $303,285,175, meaning they increased about $1.3 million from the estimates. Domestic numbers haven't been reported yet, which isn't unusual since Disney releases them pretty late in the day.

Well, to be fair, Captain Marvel's backstory is actually quite F'd up and has plenty of avenues to explore to make her more tragic.

I mean, she was taken prisoner, brainwashed, had her memory erased, and then used as a weapon for the bad guys for six years. Basically, her life was erased and she more than likely has blood on her hands because she was a hitman for the Kree. That puts her in a position where she finds out the life is a lie, her existence is not what she thought it was, and she has to redeem herself for the bad things she was forced to do.

Of course the movie doesn't maximize the potential of any of this material, but hey.

She's two parts Winter Soldier, one part Captain America, a splash of Superman, and a teaspoon of the emotional gravity of either.

I'll be honest though, it was a pretty good comic book movie. I don't get much of the criticism. It wasn't even political. If there was some SJW shit in it it went right over my head.

I just checked Box Office Mojo and I swear that they had the page for the movie up that showed the budget at about 130-150 million. Now it shows N/A.
They still don't show budgets for Black Panther and Infinity War. I'm not sure what other sites you read, but I know Deadline was reporting an "estimated" $150 million budget, meaning they're just using other tent poles to extrapolate.

This must've been akward as fuck:

Brie Larson dressed as Captain Marvel surprises moviegoers

Dressed in a Captain Marvel tracksuit, Larson visits a New Jersey movie theater and serves fans popcorn.

What's cooler than seeing Captain Marvel in theaters on opening weekend? How about having Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson serving you popcorn?

Fans going to see Captain Marvel at the AMC Clifton Commons 16 movie theater in Clifton, New Jersey, on Saturday night were surprised with a visit from Larson herself.

The official Marvel Twitter account shared photos and video on Saturday.

Larson greeted excited fans before the screening.

"I just heard that I was on the cups and popcorn and I wanted to see for myself," Larson said to the New Jersey moviegoers in the video. "Thank you so much for coming. You guys are so awesome to come opening weekend."

If that wasn't cool enough, Larson also worked the concessions stand, serving popcorn and soda to fans.

Captain Marvel is already skyrocketing up the box office charts after its first full day in theaters on Friday. The Marvel superhero film earned an estimated $61.4 million domestically, Disney announced Saturday, including the $20.7 million preview day on Thursday.

That's pretty impressive, considering Larson wasn't even at all those screenings.

Kinda like the tracksuit, though.

I'm glad Captain Marvel is doing well because I was already bored of the MCU's formula and this way I can at least get entertainment out of them going full woke retard before they end it.

Dunno if it's been posted yet but here's a Forbes article about "trolls" getting "irrevocably btfo for all eternity" because a movie with a Marvel logo made a bunch of money at the box office: https://www.forbes.com/sites/scottm...lack-panther-wonder-woman-alita/#121c6c48113c

"So, for reference, the online review-bombing from trolls, bots, so-called "toxic fans" and other disgruntled folks didn't mean a damn thing this weekend. Here's what else didn't matter: folks allegedly upset about Brie Larson's request for the press junket to be more diverse than normal, alleged controversies over Brie Larson's performance (judging entirely from the trailers) and whether she should be smiling more (spoiler: she smiles a bunch in the movie and is hopefully laughing this morning), attempts to use Alita: Battle Angel as a battering ram against the latest female-led action fantasy (#YouCanAndShouldSeeThemBoth) or concerns over the comparatively obtuse marketing campaign (okay, that's a mea culpa from me on that score)."

I too cheer when megacorps make tons of money because megacorps are our friends.

"Here's a final thought: With Marvel now opening their first minority-led superhero movie and their first female-led (solo) superhero movie to comparatively record numbers, there is (again) absolutely no excuse for them not to be the leader in highlighting blockbuster leads of all kinds (Asian, Hispanic, Muslim, Jewish, mixed-race, LGBTQIA, etc.) if they so choose to. After Black Panther and Captain Marvel, it's now only a question of whether they want to. Because the financial metrics, both in North America and overseas, clearly show that the future of the MCU is essentially everything except more white guys named Chris."

I like how he willfully ignores things such as the fact that CM's numbers are clearly inflated by people going to see it solely for its tie-in to Endgame or the fact that Marvel waiting until the very end of their decade-plus film arc to introduce said characters is going to make it difficult to replicate their successes given that Marvel now needs to both start building a new arc while keeping fans from bailing now that this one is finally coming to an end.

I dunno maybe it's just me but introducing the centerpiece of your next planned CU in a movie considered completely mediocre at best may not be the best strategy to ensure continued success.
