That makes me reflect on how one of the most famous Canadians in current pop culture, Wolverine, plays against the stereotype Canadians try to present as virtuous. It's the story, the idea, the triumph of the nation. America has it done right. The founding fathers, 1776, the wild west. An idea and an ideal. America is the greatest brand in the world. With a storied past. People want to be American. You suffer through being a Canadian.
Canada has never been able to do the same. Our first PM promised lucrative rail contracts to get elected vs Washington who fought the British and led the Continental army to victory. What great PM has Canada ever produced that captured the imagination? We don't have a Lincoln, a Jefferson or a Teddy Roosevelt. America's Generals are storied, even their lawyers become famous. Just look at Daniel Webster or Johnny Cochrane.
We spend a massive amount of effort to not inspire future generations, to not sell them on Canada and being Canadian. Instead we act like Great Value Americans. Our tv sucks, except for The Red Green show, that was kino. We make poor, lesser imitations of American tv, and film. Our cultural output has been obsessed with approval from American and European literati that has caused us to make nothing good or long lasting in the public consciousness. Our most famous novel is The Handmaid's Tale, which Atwood wrote as a paycheck book.
Mine did. I guess I got the long version of the census. On the new Census it didn't ask about ethnicity. Makes sense as the government doesn't want the stats to show that 30 percent of Canadian now Pajeets.
