Part of me does worry that if Alberta somehow managed independence it would turn out like BREXIT.

There's no shortage of oil states in the world that treat their populace like shit since the money is pumped out of the ground. And those are the ones with ocean access.

There is one key difference: An Albertans would be more then willing to drive 400km to where their politician lives and make their displeasure known. Right now anyone we'd want to bitch at lives like 3,000 km away and nobody is spending their entire weekend driving just to protest for a few hours.

Meanwhile in the UK close friends could live only 15km away and you never visit them.

That honestly made the trucker convoy even more impressive, since Canada is massive geographically so any protests would be more local unless they were once in a life time like the convoy.

Have Alberta and Saskatchewan split off and become independent, deport all the jeets to Ontario.

Just have a good relationship with the US and the rest of the canucks reeing at you won't matter.

Nawh it wouldn't happen purely because we have that 500 pound corn-fed, burger loving gorilla to the south. If Ottawa and the provincial Cons attempted dragging their heels the US would quickly put the screws to them because it's in America's strategic interest to peel off Alberta from Canada.

For reference Brexit saw the shitshow it did in part because the US at the time wanted Britain as part of the EU and helped to undermine the post-referendum negotiations. Hard to make that succeed when even your "greatest ally" wants to kill the baby in the crib.

It's the opposite. It's in the USA's strategic interest for Alberta to be discontent within Canada, not a part of the USA. It's easier and cheaper for American corporations and conglomerates to operate in Alberta as they've always done without being responsible for the Albertans that live there.

The only reason that the current administration in the USA is supporting "Albertan independence" isn't because they want Alberta to become a part of the USA, or an independent country, but because they know that the agitation that is caused by this threat will create an environment in which Alberta becomes easier and cheaper to operate in.

A big part of it (and something the state department repeatedly warned the UK electorate about) is that the UK came out swinging to every potential trade negotiation as if they were still a great power and not a cast-off from a larger, more lucrative market. The pound was massively overvalued, many of the services the UK wanted to sell were things that potential trade partners already had in abundance (either domestically or via existing trade arrangements), and every negotiation boiled down to, "We want to be able to export stuff to you without following most of your rules, while you must follow our own autistic rules to be able to trade with us."

Example: American agricultural products. There's still stories being run in major newspapers about the looming threat of American chlorinated chicken and how Britons must "NEVAR SURRENDER TO THE YANK CHICKEN." And that's all fine and good - if you had any leverage. But the reality is that you're trying to do a trade deal with a major agricultural producer/exporter while not wanting to buy their main export portfolio and wanting to export things that actually compete with domestic American goods/services.

It's retarded and it's a microcosm of every British trade negotiation since Brexit. It's a third-string power trying to negotiate as if it was still the empire and believing that you don't need to concede anything because of "le special relationship."

I don't foresee any of this being an issue with Alberta. They have things to export that the US wants and they're an existing customer for many US products. It's a much more sensible trade arrangement.

I thought the meta was fighting for Canada by joining the US as a native soldier securing the land as a garrisoning force. Just accept that football is played with an egg shaped ball and you'll fit right in. Last I checked, the US was beating Canada at hockey.

I've been practically waking up every day just this month already to hearing her playing Josh Johnson/SNL/the voice or whatever that show that Whoopi's a host on is called/etc on full blast as part of her morning routine

And then she tries to lecture me on shit like Canadians politics & how 'your generation is being purposely targeted by the algo with all this 'horrible news' to radicalize you', it's like holy fuck lady the hypocrisy!
You just tried to argue with me a few days back that there shouldn't be international military assitance for the Iranian citizens, who're currently experiencing the response of an actually fascistic government to trying to protest it, despite the regime literally importing foreign soldiers to 'asisst with keeping the peace', solely because it would be playing into American interests!

I literally saw this in the Calgary neighbourhood of Tuscany on the back of a stop sign it was a normal poster size. I find it really strange that it was in that neighbourhood because it is a well-known conservative neighbourhood with a large evangelical Christian population I wonder if this is like a tactic of intimidation there’s no way this could be
