Writing for the majority, Justice Mary Moreau said that when mandatory minimums apply to a broad range of situations, they can impose a grossly disproportionate sentence on certain offenders.

I can see the logic, but where there's more logic is oh gee, idk, having a legal system where the crown isn't fucking retarded and obviously wouldn't press charges against the 18 year old for having an unrequested picture of a naked 17 year old on their phone. Of course that's unrealistically optimistic, it's all so tiresome.

They needed the justification to get rid of it. At the end of the day they don't care as along as the minimum is removed.

I’m no legal scholar or expert. But what’s stopping them from simply not pursuing charges against the 18 year old in this particular situation? Why not still hand out mandatory sentences for real pedophiles and use proper fucking judgement and logic for these Romeo and Juliet cases?

Well this is the thing, that's how it should be. It's the RCMP's job to recommend charges to the crown, the crown can accept them and prosecute (or drop the charges) But both the RCMP and the crown prosecutors in this country have proven time and time again that they are retarded and compromised, and I wouldn't be surprised if sometimes the crown just prosecutes cases in order to justify their jobs.
I might even be persuaded to give the crown a bit of slack and lay more blame on the RCMP since they love to overcharge people with crimes and let the courts deal with it.

Seeing how that whole thing was concocted from some earth vibrational machine to it's dead children to it was the church and the government to a hundred churches and likely a whole town being burned to the ground to Trudeau laying the teddy bear down and crying to him apologizing on the behalf of all Canadians for committing genocide to now Orange shirt propaganda day, it really makes one think how many historical events were so completely and emotionally spun out of control.

I think the moment for this bill to get through has passed. Had they tried during the initial period of the "discovery" when the fervor was at it's highest it could have gone through. A lot of this residential school "denialism" has come from some "professional", "respectable" journalists at Postmedia, not just from anons. It's pretty much public record the whole thing is bullshit, for anyone who actually wants to look into it instead of just supporting the current thing.
