Britney Spears was arrested for a DUI on Wednesday night in Ventura County, Calif., Variety has confirmed.

The singer was handcuffed by the California Highway Patrol around 9:30 p.m. and booked early Thursday morning around 3 a.m. According to an arrest record, she has since been released and is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life,” a representative for Spears said in a statement. “Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

The statement continued, “Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being.”

Spears recently sold her song catalog and an unclear number of other rights to Primary Wave. In January, she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post that she “will never perform in the U.S. again because of extremely sensitive reasons.”

She continued, “But I hope to be sitting on a stool with a red rose in my hair, in a bun, performing with my son… in the UK and AUSTRALIA very soon.”

In that Instagram post, Spears shared a throwback photo of herself sitting next to a white Yamaha piano, beginning the caption with: “Sending this piano to my son this year!!! Interestingly enough, I dance on IG to heal things in my body that people have no idea about. Yup and it’s embarrassing sometimes… but I walked through the fire to save my life.”

Spears was released from her 13-year conservatorship in 2021 and has largely kept a low profile since then. The pop superstar has not released an album since 2016’s “Glory,” and she last performed live in the U.S. in 2018, when she closed out her “Piece of Me” tour with a show at the Formula One Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. She had been scheduled to return to Las Vegas in 2019 for a second residency, “Domination,” but she ultimately postponed the show and stepped away from performing indefinitely.

Britney likely has schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. She’s an active drug abuser with more money than sense and has had opportunities to both get sober and get stable that are denied to far less harmful, reckless nobodies. She has enough wealth to buy a ranch, buy an island even, and live out her days in health and wellness, wanting for nothing. But she refuses to take any responsibility for herself.

She abused her sons, even hitting one with her security guard’s belt. She bleached their hair as toddlers because she wanted them blond like mommy, it caused burns on their scalps (this is part of the custody docs.) Former staff report that she’s been sexually inappropriate with at least one of them (the provocative near nude dancing.) She drives drunk around LA all the time and then claims it wasn’t her fault, it wasn’t even her driving.

She is, forgive the phrase, toxic.
Sounds like there was an evil in her all on its own.

Still would.

No surprise. And the money will never stop coming in. Even if she spends every sent she has she will still make money from music royalties and here fragrance line. Endless cash to fuel her forever addiction and unmedicated mental illness. She won't last forever though. She'll wind up dead like MJ.

Nah she sold her music rights straight up for $200 million recently. That’s what precipitated this latest binge.

Britney likely has schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder.
I believe she was diagnosed as bipolar in 2007 when she had her psychotic episode. She definitely exhibits many or all the symptoms. Britney either has schizoaffective bipolar type, or bipolar 1. She does not have bipolar 2 because those with bipolar 2 cannot experience psychotic episodes.
It's been reported that once Britney started refusing to perform on stage while on the conservatorship, she was forced to take toxic amounts of lithium, which can literally cause brain damage (and, quite frankly, based on what you see from her on social media these days, we can at least speculate that it has).
That’s untrue. I do believe she was on a high dosage though. When taken at abnormally high levels, lithium can cause neurotoxicity to the body, but not brain damage. Lithium prevents brain damage and grey matter atrophy. It’s very helpful for retaining grey matter too. Forcing someone with bipolar to take lithium is cruel because it’s strong and may not work. Britney had stated repeatedly that she experienced adverse reactions to it. Lithium is usually the first medication that is prescribed to bipolar individuals because it is likely to be the most effective. Blood tests are required once or twice a month to monitor kidney and thyroid levels to prevent lithium toxicity. Apparently there was a group of nurses who stayed at Britney’s house for awhile to closely monitor her behavior and yes, they forced her to take lithium.

Bipolar mania is what causes the brain damage. Mania is like being possessed with absolutely zero impulse control, unbelievably high energy, and memory problems. Manic episodes causes the brain to lose grey matter, especially in the hippocampus area. Emotional regulation and executive functions decrease with each episode if not properly treated. Some bipolar medications can even trigger mania. Even basic things like Creatine (a workout supplement) can send a bipolar individual straight into psychosis. Here is a written example of Britney’s escalating manic thought process (from her IG):

All of the trauma, family abuse, and drugs doesn’t help either. Unfortunately, if she does get stable on medication, she will still need to be closely monitored for the rest of her life. When many bipolar individuals become stable for awhile, many start to doubt their diagnosis because they feel “normal.” By being stable, this means the medication is working as intended. But by feeling long-term stability, a lot of bipolar individuals stop their medication entirely. It’s because they think that their disorder never existed due to the recent stability. It makes them forget the manic and depressive episodes experienced over time, thus coming to conclusion that all of those episodes weren’t real. They might not feel it immediately, but in time they will spiral into mania and/or become highly suicidal from the sudden discontinuation of medication. If they survive, then this repeats the cycle of poor decision-making and suffering until the next episode. There is no cure to this disorder, but it can be managed with the right team of medical professionals. Even then, it’s an endless struggle. Bipolar disorder completely explains Britney’s actions, but it does not excuse them.

I was trying to find a good example of bipolar paranoia during mania and found this gem of someone’s experience:
