A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

"England stumbles in penalties" isn't news. It's expected behaviour.

Alot of people here in the UK are frothing at the mouth over usual football behaviour when the team loses...its almost like most of these people don't actually follow football and only started because England were doing slightly better than shit.

A woman is doused with Petrol and set on fire in a street in Bury, and the media barely mentions it.. In fact the three men arrested have been bailed.

The BBC made a token effort, paying tribute to the woman "who was found on fire". lol like she spontaneously combusted.

Nothing from Jess Phillips, who for years ran a womens shelter in an area with a large muslim population (while remaining on very good terms with community leaders).

The absolute state of the UK.

So a woman gets burned alive and the three people are believed to be involved are bailed? They’ll have probably already left the damn country.

The band British Sea Power have renamed themselves to just "Sea Power".

When we came up with the original band name, Britain no longer ruled the seas. The band name was intended with a kind of wry humour. The idea of British sea power in the historical sense was an obsolete thing. It was now just the name of a rock band… Now, 20 years later, we’re recasting the name. In recent times there’s been a rise in a certain kind of nationalism in this world – an isolationist, antagonistic nationalism that we don’t want to run any risk of being confused with. It’s become apparent that it’s possible to misapprehend the name British Sea Power, particularly if someone isn’t familiar with the band or their recordings. We’ve always been internationalist in our mindset, something made clear in songs like Waving Flags, an anthem to pan-European idealism. We always wanted to be an internationalist band but maybe having a specific nation state in our name wasn’t the cleverest way to demonstrate that.
I get their point that they sounded like a band off a white supremacy label but that was always the case so why change it now? I remember seeing flyers for them with guns and battleships at venues 20 years ago and already thought it was out of place. It's obviously Brexit butt hurt.

I don't think anyone would confuse you with China.

"Pan-European ideals" are nationalism on a larger scale. If size matters does that make Indian and Chinese nationalism even better?

I’ve never heard of these people why is this news?

"The incident is not terror related"
LMBO. Nonwhite shooter guaranteed.

Mass shooting going down right now in Plymouth. Multiple fatalities. Multiple casualties. Gunman on loose.

Local MPs on Twitter. One of the posters on there claims whoever did it has shot themselves but it's a commenter on Twitter who's getting their info from FB. Unlikely to be accurate;

ET

Allegedly video of Air Ambulances at the scene

Allegedly the scene of the crime, covered body with blood on the floor

Plymouth?

Probably a sailor gone nutso.
It's an OAP spot but the shooting appears to be a council area. So likely drugs related. Most of the English coast line is a hot spot for drugs, especially Portsmouth. You'd think Brighton or Blackpool. Nope, Portsmouth.

But I thought England was violence-free after the government did everything but outright ban private ownership of weaponry! How could this happen?
