A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Why, when chav also does double duty for all the other non-black footballers that like kicking women around? He doesn't deserve a specific insult because of his skin colour, he's just one more bit of scum.
He's a chav, and the kind other chavs don't like because even most of them recognise picking on the homeless is punching down and grow out of it in their early teens.

Wealdstone FC footballer Ryan Gondoh shared the video of a homeless woman hurling racist abuse on Twitter. Footage then shows him kick her money cup over before drenching her in water.

Pretty par for the course for footballer behaviour and homeless person behaviour. The fact that he went back for a second go and then uploaded the videos is where it's getting indefensible even for his fans. If he'd just boo hoo'd about his shitty impulse control he'd have been fine but recording it, doing it, doing so again, going home and putting it online is where it's hard to claim that.

His Twitter might be protected but as ever the club's own Twitter is getting comments on everything they post.

Exactly as he intended, he posted them and talked about how it demonstrates the unfair abuse black people receive when they react to racial slurs.

Given he's now gone protected though I think he underestimated just how many people support a man picking on a homeless woman. And I suspect by now the club, the police and various newspapers have been in touch and he's realised "whoops, I committed a crime, filmed myself doing it and then posted it online for everyone to see."

The bonus is that the white woman was an aryan, so hopefully somebody gives her a load of dosh to give her a second chance.

Eh, the player's skin colour makes minimal difference. UK footballers all tend to be a bit entitled.

He's a lower division team, it's unlikely to make it to national news unless it turns out she's know to social services and has some mental conditions. Which that sort of age in London and homeless seems reasonably likely, especially since right outside a station is a fairly established patch.

Man, A Clockwork Orange is such a great film.

Oh wait, this isn't the droogs beating up a homeless person for kicks, it's a professional footballer that genuinely believes he's "punching up" when he kicks away a homeless woman's change cup and sprays her in the face with water. Believes it so much he films himself doing it and uploads it to his personal Twitter account.
