A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I worked in my home city's anti-social behaviour unit for a short while, back when they were a new thing. It was, apart from me, staffed entirely by women. Now I don't want to say this explains everything, but... this explains everything, because the sort of woman who goes to work for a city council social policy unit is not going to be a very smart woman.

Didn't make more than a week before I was dismissed for being "challenging".
That's impressively swift. What was your challenge, suggesting the manager get their ass of Twitter and do their job?

There been any improvements in the city's anti-social behaviour figures since you left this team that can't be more easily put down to failures to record them rather than the unit making a difference?

They obfuscate it all, so I wouldn't be able to say for sure. ASBOs were abolished in 2014 and the ASB unit was reorganised a bunch of times after I worked there. I think they've been rolled into a larger social policy unit and don't do much actual work any more.

why doesn't she just volunteer and then barry-bullshit her way into employment?

she could easily get 5 things on a CV if she helped out with the red cross, soup kitchen etc.

IDK though, at 36? and she has never WORKED at all?

I’ve known someone like this and I don’t know how it’s even possible myself. The only problem with volunteer work is most employers only care about paid employment on a CV. A 20 year gap is pretty hard to explain if you haven’t been looking after kids.

They had it there fairly recently didn't they? Antifa rolled up to complain and got chased off within minutes. Or was that Republic of Ireland?

Oh Jesus, Antifa vs. the IRA would not end well. "See now, we actually do agree with you about the whole All Cops Are Bastards thing, but we're still going to smash your kneecaps in with this 'ere hammer"

Let me play Devil's Advocate here and ask you straight - if you were running a business, would you hire her?

Sounds in line with what I remember of what happened with the ASBOs. No doubt it'll be reorganised again in the next half a decade or so to hide the lack of any success.

Article mentions she apparently acted as carer for her mother after the woman had a stroke. Still seems a bit suspect.

I would not back Antifa vs a nursing home. In the case of that confrontation it was not even hardened protestors they were up again. Just the general populace who walked over to them, stole their signs, shut of their sound equipment and sent them cowering behind the police to one fellow's chant of "pedos" repeated over and over again.

Bunch of pissheads turn up to a Manchester taproom, then leave because the bar has standards.
You missed the best part of the article!

"The large group of punters arrived to the Marble Tap Room already drunk, danced on tables, then left within half an hour after finding out that the brewery didn't serve Blue WKD or Jagermeister."

Sounds more like a hen do. I was also briefly baffled because I recognised the photo of the Marble Arch and was certain that place did not have a beer garden like those in the other phots. Same owners not the same place.

Honestly can't imagine the state of a group of lads who all only exclusively drink wkd and jaeger, they sound tragic

It'll be the women that want the blue WKDs. The Jaegers are probably only for shots.

I just like the image of these people doing literally no research on the Marble Brewery and assuming every place that sells alcohol is no better than a Spoons.

Imagine getting arrested for quoting scripture in a land where there's a hereditary monarch, who also doubles as the head of the state religion.
It doesn't really matter what part of the Bible was getting quoted or how offensive it is in today's society. Maybe in France you could appeal to secular ideals but the Church of England is the Established Church. Religiosity is interwoven into the unwritten constitution and crowning of the monarch. For centuries, non-Anglicans were persecuted to reinforce CoE's place as the one true faith, and the heir apparent caused outrage at the suggestion of making the coronation an interfaith affair and trying to break from 500 years of custom.
If its offensive enough to get you arrested then why hasn't the Queen struck such lines from canon? We're to believe she (whoever's King / Queen at the time tbh) is God's voice on this Earth, so she's got the power. Why is there a monarch at all with a religious role when over half of the English are atheist, lapsed Anglicans, or worse?

I'm honestly fascinated how the UK apparently prides itself on tradition and legacy, yet the clear anachronisms from cherry-picking the parts of legal doctrine that look appealing leads to insane outcomes.

Agreed. The IRA were buddies with the Libyans and were basically proto-Marxists. They'd definitely go after the Billy Boys first.
That said, one of the reasons the officials and the provos split was because the IRA leadership were pushing to join NLF. Each subsequent split in the IRA can trace back to a marxist take-over attempt. Sinn Fein were thoroughly assimilated to the Liberationist cause, which caused no end of tension with the militant wing in the late 80s and the 90s, and spout nothing but marxist bollocks these days.

Have to assume their search was "nice beer garden" rather than anything else. And given this performance I'm also putting a side flutter on "not asking for a deposit for table bookings."
