A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

A law graduate of Birkbeck called Mahsa Taliefar is all of a sudden blowing up twatter with her crowdfunder to privately prosecute Dominic Cummings.

Legal Cheek is a tedious site but have a look at the person responsible. I don't know what she does or what she has done beforehand but I'm guessing that because she's a moderately attractive (if you like the instaho look) wahmen of colour, this is news nowadays.

I can't find anything on her beforehand, or what she does for a living, or anything. Given she was at Birkbeck which only accepts mature students (surely an oxymoron), I'm guessing she did something else before and then failed to actually succeed as a lawyer upon graduation for whatever reason. Speculating here, but this smells like she's fronting for someone else because her as the face of a campaign makes for better optics.

All I can find other than this is the skeleton of a Myspace profile in her name and that she tried to become a school prefect in Tottington High School in 2010, according to this Yahoo Answers.

Legally, does she have a hope? Probably not. Notwithstanding that none of the foamers have been able to point to the specific regulation that Cummings breached, the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984, under which the lockdown regulations were made, at s. 84, restricts prosecutions under that Act and regulations arising from same so I don't think you could privately prosecute for that in the first place.

She also wants £300,000 for this, and any excess is to go to charidee. I foresee a similar outcome to what happened when Marcus J. Ball tried to privately prosecure Boris over the Brexit bus. It collapsed and failed, and he sperged out about how the Courts were subjected to his "malign influence."

• Took down a statue that was coming down anyway, then dumped it in the sea, so pollution.

Ms Begum, who has just given birth, said she now wants the UK's forgiveness and supports "some British values".

She told the BBC while it was "wrong" innocent people died in the 2017 Manchester attack, it was "kind of retaliation" for attacks on IS.

While she told the BBC she would have let her late son become an IS fighter, she wants her new baby "to be British" and for her to return to the UK with him.

Hmmm. That doesn't sound like she wants him raised as, in effect, a child soldier under the radar of the authorities at all, does it.

"I actually do support some British values and I am willing to go back to the UK and settle back again and rehabilitate and that stuff."

"And all that stuff" confirms she's just mouthing platitudes at this point.

And there's the whataboutery. See, there's no real sense in anything Shamima Begum has said that indicates any real remorse or desire to be de-radicalised or de-programmed. She sounds like an alcoholic making excuses for her inability to admit that she has a problem.

John Cleese says removing Fawlty Towers episode from UKTV is 'stupid'

The Germans episode is no longer available on UKTV's streaming service as it contains racial slurs

John Cleese has branded a decision to remove the “don’t mention the war” episode of Fawlty Towers from a streaming service as “stupid”.

UKTV, which is owned by the BBC, said it had temporarily made The Germans episode unavailable because it contains “racial slurs”.

In the 1975 episode, Basil Fawlty, right, played by Cleese, declares “don’t mention the war” around German guests, while the Major uses offensive language about the West Indies cricket team.

Actor and creator Cleese called the move “stupid,” telling The Age newspaper the episode was clearly a critique of racist attitudes.

“People have very different senses of humour,” he said.

“Some of them understand that if you put nonsense words into the mouth of someone you want to make fun of, you’re not broadcasting their views, you’re making fun of them.”

A UKTV spokesman said: “The Germans episode contains racial slurs so we are taking it down while we review it.”

The episode previously came under scrutiny in 2013, when the BBC removed the scene in which the Major uses a racial slur when they re-broadcast it.

The move comes amid renewed debate over how to deal with portions of well-known films and TV shows which feature language and depictions deemed offensive by modern audiences.

Little Britain has been removed from Netflix, BBC iPlayer and BritBox over its use of blackface, with the BBC noting that "times have changed" since the series first aired.

The Mighty Boosh and The League Of Gentlemen, which also feature blackface, are no longer available to stream on Netflix, while Channel 4 no longer features Leigh Francis' Bo' Selecta on its All4 streaming platform.
