A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

They release a new Iphone, what, every 6 months, nevermind the near limitless brands of urban clothing and shoes that they recolour and sell at a premium.
These poor oppressed minorities need these essentials so they can Keep it Real in the Hood Ghetto Council Estate.

There wouldn’t be vigilante groups in the UK (blame “reasonable force”) since they would be just as likely to be arrested as the people they stop. Over here it just isn’t worth it, you may as well sit back and watch as the London boroughs, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool burn to the ground. It’s not like they’d look any different when the rioting was over.

I distinctly remember some Sikhs banding together to guard the local temple, though it was made up mostly of old codgers and youths who wanted to partake in a bit of violence but were more terrified of their mothers than the police.
They did it cause there was a shit-ton of gold built into the decorations, too heavy/static to be carried away, so in came the cricket bats and swords.

Don't know if they chased away would-be rioters, but it was the community spirit that counted.

George Floyd death: Protesters tear down slave trader statue


A slave trader's statue in Bristol has been torn down during a second day of anti-racism protests across the UK, following the death of George Floyd.

It comes after largely peaceful demonstrations in central London on Saturday saw some clashes with police.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick urged protesters to find another way to make their views heard.

But thousands of protesters in London are protesting outside the US Embassy for a second day.

Protesters in Bristol used ropes to pull down the bronze statue of Edward Colston, a prominent 17th Century slave trader.

Colston is believed to have transported about 80,000 men, women and children from Africa to the Americas.

On his death in 1721, he bequeathed his wealth to charities and his legacy can still be seen on Bristol's streets, memorials and buildings.

After the statue fell to the ground, a protester posed with his knee on the statue's neck - reminiscent of the video showing Mr Floyd, an African-American who died while being restrained by a Minnesota police officer.

Apologies for responding to an old comment, but speaking of chavs... Daniella Westbrook was the British soap actress credited with single-handedly destroying Burberry's cachet when this picture was published in the tabloids.

According to the Mail, the officer suffered a collapsed lung, broken collar bone and shattered ribs. Archive.

TBH I feel absolutely no pity for the police. They'll kneel when told, shuck and jive when forced to actually do justice and you know perfectly well they'd happily drag all of us ITT into jail for our horrible crime of being rude on the internet. I feel bad for the horsie though.

Also wow that's a coke nose if I've ever seen one.
