A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Would the baby be born a tard? That 100% determines the ethics involved.

Probably not. Depends entirely on what the cause of the mother’s intellectual disability is. Unless she has a specific genetic, dominantly inherited cause, generally no. Most babies born like this are fairly normal. The most likely scenario is that it’s a perfectly normal and healthy baby.

So much for being "pro choice"

But I agree, there are certain burdens society should not have to bear, who cares if we simply use a little bit of eugenics to cull the retarded.

Oh oops, I seem to have spilled some statistics

How can anyone be anti-abortion but make an exception for rape or incest? It's OK to kill someone if their father was a rapist? If it's ok to kill a fetus because it's not a person, then why does it matter who the father is?

The idea, which I disagree with, is that it would be traumatic for the mother and that the mother doesnt have a moral obligation to the child if she didn’t willingly produce it.

With incest, it’s because we don’t want more water heads in the world.

Has anyone noticed that this story is only being covered on two catholic news sites and a couple of pro-life sites? :c Is there any evidence whatsoever that this is actually happening? lol. Even if the woman does have the mental capacity of a child, children give birth in the UK and aren't forced to get abortions when their pregnancies are discovered. I am highly skeptical that this story is legitimate.

ETA: I did some googling, every single site covering this is citing the Catholic New Agency despite the CNA itself providing no sources or any sort or proof this is occurring the way it says it is.

The first article you linked is from 2013, not the same woman. In that article the woman was mentally disabled and had sickle cell anemia and had suffered a series of strokes already, they took her to court because the pregnancy was considered life threatening and she was suspected not to have to competency to make a decision. There is no mention of the outcome of the proceedings.

The second article you linked, you're right on the money. And as I thought, the situation is being portrayed differently by those catholic/pro-life websites.

Doctors want a judge in a specialist court to allow them to perform an abortion on a mentally-ill woman who is 22 weeks pregnant.

Specialists caring for the woman, who is in her 20s and diagnosed with a 'moderately severe' learning disorder and a mood disorder, say a termination is in her best interests.

But the woman's mother, a member of the Nigerian Igbo community, disagrees.

She said abortion is against her Roman Catholic religious beliefs and her cultural beliefs, and added she could care for the baby.

Bosses at the NHS trust, responsible for the woman's care, have asked Mrs Justice Lieven to decide what is in the woman's best interests.

Doctors have asked a judge in London's Royal Courts of Justice (pictured) to allow them to perform an abortion on a mentally-ill woman who is 22-weeks pregnant
The judge began analysing evidence at a hearing in the Court of Protection, where issues relating to people who lack the mental capacity to make decisions are considered, at the Royal Courts of Justice complex in London on Thursday.

Mrs Justice Lieven is considering the case at a public hearing but she has ruled that the woman, who lives in the London area, cannot be identified in reports of the case.

She also says the NHS trust which has begun litigation cannot be named because publication of that name might create an information jigsaw which could lead to the woman's identity being revealed.

Barrister Fiona Paterson, who is leading the trust's legal team, told Mrs Justice Lieven that specialists thought a termination would be in the woman's best interests.

She said the baby might be taken into council care and said the woman would find the loss of pregnancy easier to recover from than separation from her child.

'(Her) treating clinicians consider that on balance, a termination is in her best interests,' she said, in a written case outline.

'In broad terms (they) believe that as a result of her learning disabilities, (she) would find labour very difficult to tolerate and the recovery from a Caesarean section very challenging.

'(They) consider that (she) is likely to find the loss of a pregnancy easier to recover from than separation from the baby if he or she is taken into care.

Bosses at the NHS trust told Mrs Justice Lieven (pictured) that termination is in the woman's best interest as she would find labour and recovery from C-section 'challenging' because she has 'moderately severe' learning disorder and a mood disorder
'They also consider that (she) is at increased risk of psychosis if the pregnancy continues.'

Lawyers said the judge would have to consider the terms of the 1967 Abortion Act, which says termination may be performed up to the 24th week of pregnancy, and the 2005 Mental Capacity Act.

They said any termination would have to be carried out soon.

The woman is independently represented by staff from the office of the Official Solicitor, who help mentally-ill people at the centre of litigation.

Barrister Susanna Rickard, who is leading the woman's legal team, said abortion did not appear to be in her best interests.

Barrister John McKendrick QC, who is leading the woman's mother's legal team, suggested that doctors were underestimating the woman's abilities.

'It is accepted that (the woman) lacks capacity to conduct these proceedings and to make a decision in respect of whether or not to consent to a termination and associated ancillary treatment,' he told the judge in a written case outline.

'That being said, (her mother) considers that the applicant has underestimated (her) ability and understanding, and that more weight should be place on her wishes and feelings.'

He added: 'Termination is not in (the woman's) best interests.'

Mr McKendrick said the judge had 'no proper evidence' to show that allowing the pregnancy to continue would put the woman's life or long-term health at grave risk.

'The applicants have failed to carry out a proper best interests analysis,' he said.

'Their evidence is premised on a narrow clinical view. The application must be dismissed,' he added.

Doctors have only submitted this to a judge in a specialist court, there is no mention of any ruling being made so far. It's still pretty fucked up, don't get me wrong, but the CNA is embellishing the facts and I'm not jumping to conclusions until I see a reliable source speaking out about the outcome.

All eugenics and "Oh it's a nigger" wisecracks aside, the idea that a government in a first-world allegedly "free" country is forcibly aborting someone's child, even after someone has made it clear they are ready and willing to care for it, is a horrific fucking thing to hear.

Brexit cannot happen soon enough.

How long before Shäd submits his application for UK citizenship?

embarrassing, i just skimmed through it and read that she was unnamed, mentally disabled, etc. strange to think this has happened more than once.

i do have this article though, it does say that a court has ruled that she'd be given an abortion

True, many developmental people have no concept of stress and this actually makes for an easier pregnancy. This woman was raped and focusing on aborting the baby and not finding the rapist is what is telling to me.

Oh, don't worry about it! Yeah, it is kind of stunning to think that this has happened before. In that case though, at least there was actual danger, you know? Still not sure how I feel about it regardless. :(

Yes, I saw that article last night but am still a bit skeptical. Sky News has had some... incidents regarding validity. And why hasn't any other new organizations reported on it? Perhaps it's that I don't want to believe this is happening but I'm still not sure what to think. I hope if this really is occurring, the woman's family is able to fight back somehow. At 22-weeks, it just makes more sense to wait this out and let the family deal with it. She's more than half-way through the pregnancy anyway and two weeks away from the usual age of viability.

If this is legitimate, it's beyond horrific.

Also, consider this, which is also conveniently left out by the article OP links. How did she get pregnant in the first place? Well, obviously she had sex with someone. But she has the mind of a child. She is learning disabled and lacks capacity. She could not consent. Basically, she was raped. Do we want to force someone who was raped to carry a child to term? Think about the precedent that would set.

That's a nice false equivaloency you have set up to try to defend your shithole country. Ah, if we let this person have a choice we are "forcing" her. Leave it to a dumbass britfag to try to manipulate language as opposed to actually coming up with an argument.

Incorrect. The care plan put forward by the Bambino Gesu Hospital was simply palliative care by another means; there was still no chance of recovery in the circumstances. But because they were Scousers they did the whole woe is me thing and demanded asspats over it. It was rearranging the deckchairs.

Still seems like a good way to test and do research and help children in future cases. I mean, they raised their own money, they have someone to care for the child, and they went to another country to have it done. How does this bother you guys and your commie healthcare system again?

I fear the Dunning-Kruger is strong in you. That was exactly the opposite of what the Court found, no doubt based upon the medical and psychiatric evidence before it.

And I see the appeal to the authority is quite strong with you. BUT MUH GOVERNMENT SAYS SO! Lol It never ceases to amaze me how goddamn cucked you guys are to your government.

Citation needed. No, really. I'd love to see an actual documented case of the authorities going all cUlTuRAl sENSiTiVItY over a "potato incest baby."

See study: The entire UK governments policy on muslims for the past 20-30 years.

I mean I guess it's a pretty sweet deal for you to keep sucking that government tit. Free healthcare and you're too much of autist to have to worry about having a child for the muslims to rape? Fuck it.

I hope you enjoy your local soccer riot while your country slowly crumbles around you. You stupid fuck.

Black Mirror should be about how horrifying it is to be sent to court in the UK, it'd be pretty scary then.

As if we needed more proof what a fucking mess this country is. Also apparently "row" is an angry dispute in this language lmfao.

THE neighbour who recorded Boris Johnson's row with girlfriend Carrie Symonds has insisted he was "concerned for her welfare."
Remainer Tom Penn, 29, said he called the police after knocking on Carrie's door - and insisted that leaking a recording to The Guardian was in the "public interest".

He said: "It was loud enough and angry enough that I felt frightened and concerned for the welfare of those involved, so I went inside my own home, closed the door, and pressed record on the voice memos app on my phone.
"After a loud scream and banging, followed by silence, I ran upstairs, and with my wife agreed that we should check on our neighbours.
"I knocked three times at their front door, but there was no response. I went back upstairs into my flat, and we agreed that we should call the police."
Johnson’s partner Carrie shouted “get off me” and “get out of my flat” during the bust-up.
The would-be Prime Minister, 55, lives with PR guru Carrie, 31, at a flat in South London.
In the recording, Mr Johnson can allegedly be heard refusing to leave the flat and telling his girlfriend to “get off my f***ing laptop” before a loud crash is heard.

Carrie then reportedly told him he had ruined a sofa with red wine and added: “You just don’t care for anything because you’re spoilt.
“You have no care for money or anything.”
Mr Penn - who admitted voting Remain - then added: "To be clear, the recordings were of the noise within my own home. My sole concern up until this point was the welfare and safety of our neighbours. I hope that anybody would have done the same thing.
"Once clear that no one was harmed, I contacted the Guardian, as I felt it was of important public interest.
"I believe it is reasonable for someone who is likely to become our next prime minister to be held accountable for all of their words, actions and behaviours."
Neighbour Julie Gillings, 58, accused Mr Penn of "dirty tricks" by leaking the recording.
She blasted: "It's an invasion of privacy and dirty-handed tricks - I don't care if they're Labour or whatever party they belong to.
"I would hate that. I just think it's bad, it's really bad - phone the police, but don't record it.
"If that was my next door neighbour, I'd never speak to him again."
To be honest, if my husband spilled red wine on my settee I'd do more than shout at him."

'GET OFF MY F***ING LAPTOP'

MP Ben Wallace, a senior ally of Mr Johnson tweeted a message in support, before quickly deleting it.
He wrote: "What a non story 'couple have row.' Lefty neighbours give recording to Guardian.
"Newspaper reaches new low is a better news story."
Nursery worker Fatima, 32, lives next door to the couple with her four-year-old son.
She said: “I heard a lot of noise, mostly screaming and shouting. It lasted about ten minutes.
“I was watching something on TV, I had to mute it. I’ve never heard anything like it before.
“I heard three or four glass objects being thrown while she was shouting.
“He had a much calmer voice and was telling her to calm down, but she was still chucking things about.
“She sounded very angry, shouting and swearing. It did cross my mind to call the police but then they turned up and I was reassured.
“I saw one police car and a van, they stayed about ten minutes and left. Then it was all quiet for the rest of the night.”

ROW 'NOT SERIOUS'

Last night the couple tried to play down the incident — telling friends they did have a row but insisting it was not serious.
But stunned allies of the former Foreign Secretary were trying to get hold of the tape to assess the potential damage for themselves.
And there were unconfirmed reports Johnson may seek an injunction over it.
Scotland Yard said last night the pair were “safe and well” and no offences had been committed.
A spokesman said: “At 00.24hrs, police responded to a call from a resident in the SE5 area of Camberwell.
“The caller was concerned for the welfare of a female neighbour.
“Police attended and spoke to all occupants of the address who were all safe and well.
“There were no offences or concerns apparent to the officers and there was no cause for police action.”
But the shocking revelations will throw into doubt Mr Johnson’s hopes of a smooth journey into Downing Street in the next month.

PR expert Carrie has been dating the Conservative Party favourite since last year.

Last night allies of the former Foreign Secretary were left stunned by the revelation.

It appeared Boris had not even told any of his campaign team about the cops’ visit.

Mr Johnson’s spokesman refused to make any comment on the incident last night, or deny any of the facts about it — first reported by The Guardian.
But one senior MP close to Boris said last night: “What the hell is he thinking? This is our worst nightmare”.

When The Sun broke the news to another senior MP backer, he said: “Oh f***.” But others close to Mr Johnson attempted to shake it off.
Another senior figure on his team said: “It’s just an argument with his girlfriend isn’t it?

“I’m sure it can all be explained, and that’s what I imagine Carrie will be doing tomorrow.”

However, the shocking revelations will still throw into doubt Mr Johnson’s hopes of a smooth journey into Downing Street in the next month.

The incident will raise questions among Tory members - who will choose between Mr Johnson and Jeremy Hunt - over Boris’s complicated private life.
He is twice divorced and had a love child while Mayor of London.

After Friday morning's incident, one senior MP close to Boris said: “What the hell is he thinking? This is our worst nightmare”.
