A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

This is right up there with forced sterilization of the mentally ill (and in the past, mental illness was fairly broadly defined). Her mother would be taking care of the kid, she'd probably be more of a sibling to it. Either that, or it would be given up for adoption.

It really irks me when people forget the whole "choice" part of pro-choice.

My guess is they're wanting to abort the baby so that there is no product left of an obvious crime that took place. If the baby survives, DNA tested, I bet you anything it'd be the child of a worker/Doctor of the NHS and the mother could sue the shit out of the system - a system that has no money to spare.

Has anyone noticed that this story is only being covered on two catholic news sites and a couple of pro-life sites? Is there any evidence whatsoever that this is actually happening? lol. Even if the woman does have the mental capacity of a child, children give birth in the UK and aren't forced to get abortions when their pregnancies are discovered. I am highly skeptical that this story is legitimate.

ETA: I did some googling, every single site covering this is citing the Catholic News Agency despite the CNA itself providing no sources or any sort or proof this is occurring the way it says it is.

Time to break the circle jerk. Firstly, the treatment they were proposing for Alfie was an untested and unlikely to be effective treatment that would have prolonged suffering. From the judgement in that case:

"the consensus of every doctor from every country who had ever evaluated Alfie's condition, to the inevitable conclusion (following 7 days of evidence) that Alfie's brain had been so corroded by his Neurodegenerative Brain Disorder that there was simply no prospect of recovery. By the time I requested the updated MRI scan in February, the signal intensity was so bright that it revealed a brain that had been almost entirely wiped out. In simple terms the brain consisted only of water and CSF. [...] All that could be offered by the Bambino Gesu Hospital in Rome was an alternative palliative care plan."

As regards this lot, I've not been able to find the judgement and I think you lot ought to read it because the Catholic News Agency is about as reliable a source as some sped on twatter when it comes to this, let's be frank. Daily reminder that these are the people who believe that vaccines contain aborted foetuses. Sky News quotes her thus, which is left out of the article OP links (wonder why?).

In a ruling, Mrs Justice Lieven said: "I am acutely conscious of the fact that for the State to order a woman to have a termination where it appears that she doesn't want it is an immense intrusion.

"I have to operate in (her) best interests, not on society's views of termination."

The woman would be unable to care for the child on her own and the judge was concerned about the risks posed by the woman's behavioural and psychological problems.

She said the woman may have to leave home if the baby was placed in the care of the woman's mother.

The child could also potentially be placed into foster care.

The judge said she believed the woman would suffer more distress if the baby was taken away, rather than if it was terminated.

"Pregnancy, although real to her, doesn't have a baby outside her body she can touch," she said.

The article OP links then tries to smear the judge, claiming that because she previously represented the BPAS, she's obviously in the pocket of Big Abortuary (this is a term that some of these anti-abortion speds actually use).

Also, consider this, which is also conveniently left out by the article OP links. How did she get pregnant in the first place? Well, obviously she had sex with someone. But she has the mind of a child. She is learning disabled and lacks capacity. She could not consent. Basically, she was raped. Do we want to force someone who was raped to carry a child to term? Think about the precedent that would set.
