A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The Ministry of Defence has launched an investigation into a video which appears to show soldiers firing shots at a picture of Jeremy Corbyn.
The video, which has not been verified by the BBC, appears to show four paratroopers using a portrait of the Labour leader for target practice.
An Army spokesperson said it was aware of the video and was investigating.
"This behaviour is totally unacceptable and falls well below the high standards the Army expects," they said.
A Labour Party spokesman called the behaviour alarming and unacceptable but said they have confidence in the Ministry of Defence to investigate and act on this incident.
Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat, a former lieutenant colonel who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, said the video was "disgraceful".
Rory Stewart, Conservative minister for prisons, told the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire that it was "completely wrong" and was "outrageous behaviour".
"They should not be political - they are there to defend the country and the Queen," he said.

The emergence of the video comes at a time of heightened alarm about the safety of MPs as tensions rise over Brexit.
Labour MP Jess Phillips tweeted: "This is absolutely hideous and irresponsible under this or any climate."
And Angela Rayner, Labour's shadow education secretary, said she hoped the investigation would be conducted "thoroughly and the conclusions made public".
It is not known when the footage was filmed but it is thought it was recorded in Kabul, Afghanistan.
It is believed the short clip first circulated on Snapchat before being posted on Twitter.

I love how MPs are fearing for their lives now, if they're that bothered, they should stop being so shit!

I'm awaiting the eventual "it was just a joke"-defense that flew oh so well with the Nazi pug in the United Kaliphates.

Just getting some target practice in before they go in and clean out the vipers den...one can hope.
Politicians getting involved and pissing off the army, thats's always played out well historically.

Seems like if these folks were legitimately concerned about minimizing political violence they would let people blow off steam instead of doing the exact opposite and trying to seal off every avenue of release no matter how small or petty.

"Our soldiers should not be political" is not really a phrase I would ever use when their higher ups are know to have done some fucking stupid shit in the past few years. Especially around Political Correctness.

It was filmed by presumably soldiers in presumably Afghanistan. So presumably they are just letting of steam. Interesting to note that it is the more sensitive women politicians calling for this. If indeed the British Army follow through with this, they are fucking idiots and in a deeper hole than I thought. (Which was already fucking deep)

This is actually messed up. So I’m guessing they’re gonna stage a shit show Coup d’etat and try to proclaim a Military Junta?

What could he have possibly done to upset them? Aside from calling for widespread cuts in their numbers, holding a minute's silence for IRA killers and spending a career cosying up to terrorist organisations, I just can't think of anything.

Internet sites could be fined or blocked if they fail to tackle "online harms" such as terrorist propaganda and child abuse, under government plans.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has proposed an independent watchdog and a code of practice that tech companies would have to follow.

Senior managers would be held liable for breaches, with a possible levy on the industry to fund the regulator.

But one think tank called the plans a "historic attack" on freedom of speech.

The Online Harms White Paper covers a range of issues, including spreading terrorist content, child sex abuse, so-called revenge pornography, hate crimes, harassment and "fake news".

Ministers also say social networks must tackle material that encourages self-harm and suicide, which became a prominent issue after 14-year-old Molly Russell took her own life in 2017.

After she died her family found distressing material about depression and suicide on her Instagram account. Molly's father holds the social media giant partly responsible for her death.

Unveiling the proposals, Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Jeremy Wright said: "The era of self-regulation for online companies is over.

"Voluntary actions from industry to tackle online harms have not been applied consistently or gone far enough."

I'm glad to see they take this seriously and have wheeled out the A-Team from "The Department for Culture, Media and Sport"

They still haven't done the porn block. I assume their plan was to push this through after it already happened but turns out all these laws are impossible to implement and everything is starting to get clogged up.
Seeing them try (and fail) to create an even more complex blocking system than the one that's 3 years behind is gonna be funny.

Personally i'm waiting for somebody to leave a drive somewhere containing the database of people who signed up to access porn in the UK.
