A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'm glad that both mom and baby are safe and healthy but, Elodie? Could she not have bothered to pick a better name for the kid? Imagine having to put that on your job name tag.
At least it's not Squire Sebastian Senator.
It's pissing me off because part of me wants to believe it's a "Jame Gumb" situation where she meant to write "Melody" but God she's just white trash.

Elodie is a real name. It's French but used in the UK fairly often. Inside the top 150 names in the last few years. I'm surprised she hasn't called the child something like Lacey, Neveah or DemiLeigh which are fairly common names in that area.

Mary probably just had two uteroonies like this lady and lil jesus fell right out one day.

Hell of a way to kick off a religion, I reckon.

Edit: I am a sleep deprived idiot.

Anybody remember the Cronenberg movie Dead Ringers?

Gynecological instruments for mutant women?

It’s not fiction.

Two wombs? Well don't let the welfare queens hear of that, they will be jellyous, just imagine popping two out at once!

Fuck me, I thought another sick fuck knocked up a vegetable. It's actually not that uncommon for women not to show at all until month 8 or 9, though I notice it tends to be either women who are fat (obviously) or super fit (they usually gain minimal weight and just look a little bloated). The only ones I've personally seen or met who ended up in labor with no clue were some variety of drug addict, heroin causes low birth weight and junkies are often too fucked up to notice/care about periods or birth control.

Girl lucked out that they were able to work through the complications, hopefully she was at least taking care of herself.

Yeah, this story had the potential to be all kinds of wrong (baby from a coma patient) or stupid (one of those 'I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant!' women), but instead involves a rare medical condition and a happy ending.

And I mean, if you're a woman who's feeling a bit sick but you're still having your period, I can see why the thought that you might be pregnant wouldn't even occur to you. From the sounds of it, she had none of the usual signs of being pregnant - even the coma isn't something that anyone would initially suspect was to do with pregnancy.

The two wombs thing is fascinating, though.

About 4,000 people joined former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson in a protest against the BBC.

The corporation confirmed an upcoming Panorama episode was investigating Mr Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

He criticised the programme at the rally outside the BBC's Salford offices. About 500 people attended a counter-protest by anti-fascists.

The BBC said the episode would follow its "strict editorial guidelines".

Mr Yaxley-Lennon said the aim of the protest was to make a stand "against the corrupt media" and called for the BBC licence fee to scrapped.

During the rally, undercover filming of BBC Panorama journalist John Sweeney, carried out by a supporter of Mr Yaxley-Lennon, was broadcast on a large screen.

Mr Sweeney is heard saying "one of my political heroes is the former head of the IRA Martin McGuinness."

Mr McGuinness, who, as a prominent Sinn Fein politician, became Northern Ireland's deputy first minister, had acknowledged he was a member of the IRA. He died in 2017.

Mr Sweeney was also recorded making remarks which Tommy Robinson has described as racist, homophobic and anti-working class.

In response, a BBC spokeswoman said: "The BBC strongly rejects any suggestion that our journalism is 'faked' or biased.

"Any programme we broadcast will adhere to the BBC's strict editorial guidelines.

"Some of the footage which has been released was recorded without our knowledge during this investigation and John Sweeney made some offensive and inappropriate remarks, for which he apologises. BBC Panorama's investigation will continue."

UKIP leader Gerard Batten told demonstrators that Mr Yaxley-Lennon "speaks up for things that are right, he tells the truth and he can mobilise lots of people like you, and that's what they fear".

A rally organiser also took to the stage and told demonstrators: "Don't touch the photographers or any of the media companies. Let them be. Just for today."

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) said they "roundly condemn Tommy Robinson... and his fellow, far-right thugs who intend to intimidate staff at the corporation, particularly those working on Panorama".

"BBC staff should be free to do their jobs without these threats," the NUJ spokesperson added.

"Intimidation, threats and violence carried out by far-right protesters systematically targeting the media, especially photojournalists, are becoming more frequent and we will always call out this behaviour and report criminal activity to the police."

Twitter ban
In May 2018, Mr Yaxley-Lennon was jailed for potentially prejudicing two court cases - in Canterbury and Leeds - after having been found to have broken contempt of court laws by live-streaming outside them on social media.

The Court of Appeal later quashed the Leeds conviction and ordered that it be reheard in its entirety.

Mr Yaxley-Lennon is waiting for a decision from the attorney general on whether he will face a full trial for the alleged contempt outside Leeds Crown Court - the ruling that he committed contempt of court by live-streaming in Canterbury still stands.

He told the Salford protest: "I want us all to give him a message… I dare you to charge me again because I just want to see the scenes outside court."

In November, PayPal announced it would no longer process payments for Mr Yaxley-Lennon, saying he had broken its policy on acceptable use.

He was banned from Twitter in March 2018. It is understood that his account was suspended for breaking its "hateful conduct policy".

Love that Antifags couldn't even be arsed to turn up in similar numbers.

someone as exceptional as tommy robinson can turn up 4,000 people, but antifa can't seem to even get an organized protest. amazing.

I went. From what I saw when I went past their group they outnumbered the Tommy supporters. I guess it just looked like a lot more because they were tightly packed in a small space. In this instance though I'll accept the Fake News at their word. They have no reason to downplay the anti-Tommy numbers/

They were singing about Nazi's. As they do. But that was pretty much as Antifa as they got.

I left after about 15 minutes of the Tommy video because of an incident which I won't be writing about here, but I'll give my perspective on the day, if anyone wants it.

The BBC said:
Mr Yaxley-Lennon

Tommy needs to pretend to troon out so that the BBC will stop dead-naming him.

The BBC strongly rejects any suggestion that our journalism is 'faked' or biased.

We know. Fake News insists it's not Fake News. Gets offended by being called Fake News. Persists creating Fake News.

Fuck off BBC. The licence fee would never be put to a referendum because you know you'd lose. I think I'm pretty much fine with the licence fee (Martin Monkey Keown aside) in general, but just because of their fake news bias I'd vote to scrap the licence fee. I think there is a great deal of good that the BBC do throughout their platform. I'd put every last bit of it at risk just because they are fake news.

It really looked like more Antifa members? Really?

I want the License fee to be scrapped because the BBC are fucking corrupt and lost their minds, even their regular programming stinks now.

That was how it appeared to me as a Nazi walking past them.

I really do think it's wrong to call them Antifa. They were just union workers and committed socialists.

My guess is that they probably stacked the edges of a box to make it look like they had a lot more people there than they did. They did sound pretty good though. I'd say they sang about Nazi's better than the Tommy's sang Tommy's name.

The timing may have also played a part. I think they got there at 11am. Tommy's was a 1pm, 2pm, who fucking knows pm. Tommy's people did try and rile the crowds with saying that the tram was being stopped a couple of stops early (I think that was true) and the police had allowed Antifa to breach their assigned area (I suspect that was bullshit).

I'm going to be honest, I suspected Antifa attacks and that we'd be blamed for retaliation. I suspected that cops would stand down so that it became a riot. That doesn't seem to have happened. I suspect that the police were bored shitless and did their job by the book. I would be interested to know if the tram thing was a normal thing with protests. I was outside the event and looking directly at a group of cops when the PA said the trams were being stopped to hinder them - the reaction of those cops said they didn't agree with the comment.

Ah, it's Tommy Ten-Names and his false victim narrative that he sells to impressionable people online for the cash in their bank accounts.

He's made more than two million pounds in the last year from donations, yet he was begging fans to donate money for a budget hotel on over the last week. Robinson is a known coke fiend, and most likely spends millions on the old marching powder - he's off his face in a ton a videos.

I'm sure people don't turn up to counter-protest at his rallies anymore as he tends to humiliate himself - he certainly humiliated himself in Scotland recently.

So you are defending terrorists and rapists then.

No need to build a straw man there. I'm against terrorism as much as the next person, but it's obvious that Robinson is a conman.

If Robinson really is that popular, why doesn't he try doing a rally or a visit to Northern Ireland, specifically Belfast? I'm sure the locals will love him there.
