A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It has shifted dramatically lol. The bbc is running coverage of immigration lawyers telling asylum claimants to pretend to be gay so they get approved. That would have been called some nazi conspiracy theory even 5 years ago.
Well, yeah I did see that story. But I mean tonight I'm looking at Reform on 78, well ahead of all the other parties (second is Lib Dems on 12 ffs), but the focus doesn't seem to be immigrants so far. It's like their raison d'etre.

Maybe I'm wrong though. I guess this is only the locals, and to be fair it has been mentioned. I dunno, it's kinda late.

I'm watching the results but I'm at work and have to be awake.

Reform don't go far right enough for me,which figures because anything less than lederhosen wearing, Horst Wessel Liede singing is too commie for my liking.
There's a silver lining (and yes, you may send many rainbows my way!) in that many of Reform's prospective white councillors are far more right-leaning than Nigel when it comes to immigration. I'll certainly be celebrating, especially considering some of the rumours I've been hearing.

I really don't know what to think about this. Initially I thought this was a wind up. Equal parts lunacy, hilarious and horrifying ?

The Greens are putting the mentally handicapped into politics.

I do wonder if I have completely lost the plot - are people seriously voting for them ? Is it just retards voting for retards ? I don't remember there being this percentage of people with obvious mental problems in society before. What the hell is going on ? Are people just taking the piss voting for them ?
I was going to do "shag, marry, kill" just for laughs, but when I actually looked I was just going: kill... kill... kill

The rumors being what, exactly?

So is this like local/state elections in the US as opposed to Congressional/Presidential elections? Or is it more like midterms?

Burgering minds wanna know...
Very local. In our general elections we elect 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) who each represent a constituency in the country, and sit in Parliament and vote on our laws.

These elections are NOT about that. Instead these elections are for Councillors who also represent a small local area but are in a charge of things like bin collection.

At the same time, there are elections for some Mayors, and also Wales' and Scotland's pretend parliaments.

I mean we could bomb both (in fucking Minecraft obviously). But both buildings are such carbuncles, nobody would notice difference.

What @Clem Fandango said. I'd add that like the US midterms, these can be a way of showing dissatisfaction with the governing party. The same thing used to happen in the European elections too; back when the UK was in the EU, UKIP would do well as a protest vote. I don't think many are voting Reform because they're confident the bin collection will be more efficient, it's a message on immigration.

So far that seems to be happening on steroids. Huge losses for Labour (the governing party), big losses too for the Tories (the opposition who were in power for 14 years before Labour got in), huge gains for Reform (right wing), small gains for the Greens (left wing). Greens expected to make more gains in places like London but not as many as Reform.

The SNP (left wing nationalists) will still be the biggest party in Scotland because even though people are disillusioned with them, they still hate the other parties more. Wales will probably be close between Plaid Cymru (left wing nationalists who have already said they won't pursue an independence referendum if elected) and Reform. Areas that have voted Labour since Labour has existed, that stuck with them even while England's Red Wall voted for the Tories to deliver Brexit, are going to desert them in Wales.

I voted Reform not to put Reform in by any means, but to shift the Overton window as a whole on the immigration issue. At the moment, that sadly doesn't seem to be happening.
Oh, I don't know. I sometimes pop into r/ukpolitics just to see what they're gibbering about, and there's an increasing number of comments along the lines of "Obviously Rupert Lowe is literally Hitler, but did you see what he said about [current thing]?"and it gets upvoted instead of nuked.
The extent to which this will translate into actual change is unknown, but I think the window is moving a lot more than the press would have us believe.

I voted Reform, and for all I know they could have some sort of pledge to eliminate bin collection altogether. But I voted for them because I hate seeing those fucking binbag wearing hijabi women on the bus so much. I would literally trade in bin collection and take my rubbish to the tip myself in my car if they would genuinely deport every non-white from this country.

Eta:

This is the second time tonight I've heard the BBC mention a "Labour HOLD" in Wigan.

They couldn't possibly have fucking lost it you idiots. Only a third of the seats were up for grabs. Labour lost almost all of those to Reform. But it's meaningless to talk about a "Labour HOLD" when no other outcome could have occurred.

Now is not the time to replace Keir Starmer, Deputy PM David Lammy tells BBC Radio Election 26 Special.

"You don't change the pilot during the flight.
You do when he's crashing the plane you fucking useless giga nigger.

I've been watching the results around Manchester and Salford, which are traditionally some of the safest part of Labour's red wall, and holy shit it's a fucking massacre. Salford's deputy mayor got absolutely BTFO after having a massive majority in his previous election.

Probably the most interesting result IMO is Broughton. The area has a huge orthodox jewish community, and has voted solidly Labour for basically ever. The candidate up for election today has been a councillor since 1990, and usually wins with the typical 50-60% of the vote you expect in a super safe seat. Today he won by 6 votes :story:
