A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I have no contact with any of them or anyone else who knows them now. I'd like to imagine they've changed their minds, but I suspect not, and I doubt they would ever unblock my number to apologise. They're cowards.

I don't have a Facebook account but I used a family member's to have a cheeky peek at one ex-friend's page for the first time in years. She somehow ended up marrying her Albanian (illegal) immigrant boyfriend, has two children, and spends a lot of energy ranting about the far-right and how crucial immigration is for the UK.
I always believed her Albanian boyfriend was using her and the relationship would end very badly, particularly when his illegal cousin also moved into her flat. I'm relieved she at least didn't end up being abused by an Albanian gang, but if it was up to me the entire family would be deported to Albania. I think it's fair to say that my values have probably diverged from theirs significantly over the years and even if we agreed on trannies, they almost certainly still consider themselves morally superior due to their politics. I have a lot of sympathy for young men trying to find a sane girlfriend who hasn't been brainwashed by Woke social media. Their betrayal really fucked me up for a while, and I still struggle to trust women my age or younger.

Council and mayoral in my area today, both previously strongly (maybe entirely, I don't fecking know) Labour. Greens set to make inroads, but not likely to be a complete takeover. I've only received materials from the green candidates, so no idea what anybody else is standing for. Probably going to vote reform across the board, as an act of shouting into the void -- sorry, I mean carrying out my democratic right.

I'm more interested in seeing the fallout within Labour once the count is said and done. It will also be funny to see the Greens getting more coverage for their gains, and resulting exposure of the complete disconnect between the LGBTQIAPP+ communists and the Islamo-fascists within the party.

Are the Greens really expected to make huge inroads in the shithole areas of London? I was just looking up predictions for some of the traditionally Labour/Lib Dem east and north London councils and apparently they're expected to go really Green today. They're predicted 31 seats in Haringey for example, and while I could see them cleaning up in the Highgate/Muswell Hill areas, it's hard for me to get my head around the idea of Harringay, Tottenham, Finsbury Park, going heavily Green. Have they managed to become the muslim/afro-caribbean party all over the UK? As well as the rainbow-queer party?

I try not to be a doomer but I don't see how it could be solved at this point. I'd love to be convinced otherwise.
In my experience the few teachers and academics who have the ability and the inclination to even acknowledge the problems tend to be boomers, who have been retiring as soon as they can afford to.
New teachers, from primary to tertiary level, are all very young and inexperienced, typically straight out of university. They've been entirely educated under the post-Blair system and promote the same to their pupils.
Science and maths departments are particularly reliant on inept foreigners due to staff shortages. I once observed one Nigerian teacher tell his Physics class that the moon doesn't actually rotate, but at least he could speak English, unlike some.
Anyone who can recognise the (many) problems and genuinely cares about education doesn't tend to last very long in the job. 44% of newly qualified physics teachers leave within 5 years.

The increase in violence from both pupils and their parents over the years is yet another issue, as are the longterm implications of the closure of most grammar schools back in the 70s. It's been a race to the bottom for a long time.

It was a bit weird voting this morning.

I was expecting the "Vote for up to 3 people" thing, but they also had another slip of paper on which we had to vote for a further "Up to 6 people" !

There were loads of people listed on the one you could vote 3, and 6 people on the one you could vote 6, so, if everyone voted for everyone on the 6 vote paper, then everyone who applied would get in? Maybe I've got that bit wrong, I know you don't HAVE to vote for all 6, but I know some people would misunderstand it, think you have to vote for 6, and everyone who put themselves forward would get in.

Ironically the long, massive piece of of paper was the one to choose up to 3 candidates, and the small one was the up to 6 people one.
