A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

To quote Yes, Minister "Imagine putting defence in their hands, give every council 100 million and ask them to defend themselves, we wouldn't have to worry about the Russians we'd have a civil war in three weeks!"
There's an unfortunate admission behind all that, isn't there? For all the pretence of a unified English culture and all the mingling that has occurred in the last century or so, there's still profound cultural differences between the old kingdoms. It would only take a few small mistakes for a lot of people to decide that Norf Umbro used to be a kingdom in its own right, back in the day, bringing about the rise of a new nationalism based on saggy tracksuits and cheap footie shoes.

I'm out of touch with things at this point but wouldn't football teams be the obvious ways to draw lines? This is a Man U area, fuck off Liverpool! Or Maybe Rugby but no one gives a shit about Rugby.

Sure, if you want ten thousand petty kingdoms the size of a postage stamp.
It’s a really funny idea though. One could imagine a book set in 2100, in the blasted ruins of the former UK, after someone hacked the trident missiles in an argument over how to pronounce scone.

I won’t say which city, not Rotherham, but I know a woman who was a social worker and who tried for a long time to get the police involved when gangs were taking the girls in her care from the home she worked in. I believe all of it.
I had a friend who was literally yanked off the street middle of the day into a taxi cab with a group of pakistani men. A Northern city but probably one you'd imagine to be safer. She managed to fight her way out of it which is not bad going for a lass under 18 against multiple grown men. But here's the thing. When she told me this story, which was early on in my knowing her, she felt the need to preface the story and emphasise later, that "I'm not racist".

She had nearly been gang-raped and society was so hyper-focused on this one aspect that she was worried if she told the story to me that I'd condemn her for being racist.

This was over twenty years ago. That's how long this has been going on and how badly people have been brow-beaten into not talking about it.

I cannot tell you how angry this makes me. We’ve all been trained like beaten dogs. I’m glad she managed to get away, poor girl.
The correct response in a just society would be everyone in her family locating the occupants of said taxi and throwing them into a disused mineshaft.

Lindsay Hoyle has revealed it was him who fooled Randy Mandy's plans to escape to the Virgin Islands.
According to The Times, Hoyle spent last week in the British Virgin Islands and was told by local contacts that Mandelson had plans to travel there Hoyle said: “Members will be aware of comments in the media regarding the arrest of Lord Mandelson. To prevent any inaccurate speculation. I'd like to confirm that upon receipt of information that I felt it was relevant, I passed this on to the Metropolitan Police in good faith, as is my duty and responsibility”

Perhaps the only decent thing he's done? Feels pretty big for him to be the one to do this, even if the investigation will be a farce.

Not to quibble but in a just society, the family wouldn't have to because the police would actually deal with such matters.

We have been talking about it. Constantly and out in the open. But nothing gets done about it and the general public won't take matters into their own hands.

It's not a secret. It's front page news, everyone gossips about it, we post about it near daily. Social media is full of boomers talking about it. The issue is not it being hidden. It's that the people who control violence in our society wish to use it against us and not them.

It rather suggest how much his social circle must overlap with Mandelson, but good he passed it on.

It's a very real problem going back decades that many people have been afraid to talk about it for fear of being called racist. Not sure what you're contesting.

Rotherham's report was 12 years ago now. I don't know who you're talking to but it's not any one like around me. It's known and openly discussed. I don't understand what sort of world you're living in if you don't think the rape gangs aren't a mainstream topic. It's literally one of the leading causes of Reform getting so popular.

Maybe I'm just not snobby enough where it's impolite to mention child abuse at the dinner parties.

Try reading the whole thing before lunging for your keyboard. But that said, yes, it is still a real problem today. I hate to explain this to you but the existence of a North, implies the existence of a South and yes - in much of it, it still remains the case that people avoid discussing real objective facts for fear of being perceived as racist and therefore is still a problem this nation is overcoming.

In this thread, @Kofi Drinka learns of the world outside his pub.

I don't know why you think that's the case when the literal current discourse in mainstream politics are "We need to get rid of labour/Starmer" and "We need to get rid of the foreigners, they're raping our kids and making our streets unsafe".

Lowe and Starmer (and maybe Farage) are the biggest celebrities in politics right now. And Lowe is constantly talking about the rape gangs. We just had Bear Gryls or whatever the fuck he's called ask about it. I don't understand how you can think this isn't mainstream.

Poor Koffi. First he learns I am not the woman depicted in my avatar. Now I introduce him to the concept of Time. It's been a tough week for the poor guy.

Nobody ask him if he didn't have breakfast this morning.
