A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Traditional forums scare and confuse the young uns. Kiwi Farms, ARRSE and Mumsnet might be the holy trinity of surviving old school forums. These days everyone uses Reddit and Discord instead. And if you don't have the right opinions there they just ban you. Forums are kept alive purely by people who can't go anywhere else without getting banned.

It's quite depressing to think about what the internet was like before all the big tech companies took over. All the old stories from SomthingAwful and of course CWC himself. The internet and society peaked in 2000-2011. Everything went downhill after Reach came out.

I have on 2 occasions wrote up one of my typical walls of text expressing how lowly I feel of such people, but I felt like an asshole and it was a tad mean-spirited so I deleted them before posting them.

I gave some allusion to it with Lord Miles' "I'm leaving the UK" twitter post.
In some instances, it just comes across as smug and vindictive.
In effect, it's comes across as you bragging over the fact you left, and now everyone else — the suckers, unfortunate poors, and optimistic idiots — have to "suffer" in a "doomed" country.
To me it always signals a bunch of other things:
1) You have no blood ties or other bonds to people someone within country. (There was a poster once who extolled his hatred of family and thankfulness he was no longer living in the UK)
2) You're trying to implicitly brag about your wealth, since you can afford to uproot and leave like that (Lord Miles highlighting "taxes" as being a reason he left doesn't help in this regard)
3) Your care and preservation starts first with yourself before it extends to others.
4) You have no connection to the land itself, so nationality and culture is a metaphysical abstraction, not something tied to land, blood, language, race, etc.
5) You'd have no reason to signal your desire to leave, or your previous residence in the country, if times were good. Signalling your intent to leave or having already left is only done because your view of the country is bad. Were things good, you'd be rightly ashamed of espousing nationalist sentiments yet leaving/having left your country behind.

In doing so you're trading away your nationality altogether. Native, foreigner, and the third class: immigrant. As a rootless cosmopolitan who forsook their nationality altogether. You have no loyalty to the country you've moved to, and you weren't loyal or loving of your home country to stay. Immigrants are aware of their own immigrant status and it tends to transcend their prior nationality, and so will work with other immigrants to protect the immigrant class i.e. people who not truly consider themselves as belonging to any state. You can go abroad for holiday, transit temporarily for work purposes, etc, but if your house and home isn't in your native land then it's hard for me to not to feel a little contemptuous considering how much you've got going against. Protecting the lives of your family, some fairytale-esque instance of love, etc — there's very few acceptable instances of moving away from the homeland.

It used to be that the brand was usually better. But now you often find the white label is. McVities digestives now have palm oil in, and a hideous texture but some of the supermarket own brands don’t.

Because they haven't become complacent in their success, and their value as a company isn't solely reliant on this one product. Stores make more direct profit selling their own brand so they actually bother to compete. First they undercut larger brands, and then they improve the quality to make them more attractive than the competitor. Since McVitties probably hit their revenue ceiling years ago, they can only increase profits by decreasing costs, which usually comes at the expense of the product. I know you probably already know all this but it makes sense why own brands from stories and white labels are surpassing the competition quality-wise. The sky's the limit on quality because their profit ceiling isn't tethered to a handful of products.

Your post summed up exactly how I feel. Metropolitan people think they're worldly and above us "little Britain" types. They're just scum invading someone else's home on mass. I know how it feels to have my home invaded, so why would I wish to do that to someone else's home? When I go to another part of the UK the mud isn't the same colour, the water tastes different and everyone looks slightly weird and has different slang. I feel like I'm some where other than home and that's already a strange feeling. Being some where totally foreign and thinking "this is home now" is an alien concept to me. I could not leave this island and not have a part of myself left behind. An important part of myself that I would yearn for the rest of my life. Here is home, these are my people. If I abandoned them in their hour of need what type of a man would I be? An American, no ethnicity, no purpose, just consume and have no roots.

Trump has the right idea with US intervention, that is not to invade and occupy countries at all and just use precision strikes and special forces to force political concessions.
