A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

That apology on Thursday just struck me to be one of a psychopath. He can't empathise.
He has no idea why the public are annoyed. He doesn't get it, he doesn't understand the anger that people feel over noncery. He doesn't understand why people who weren't direct victims are still disgusted and angry. He only apologised to the victims. He doesn't understand the anger that he ignored the security advice and still appointed Mandelson in spite of his reputation and known associates, that the man was untrustworthy and has completely betrayed all of our trust by selling his country down the river.
He doesn't get that either he supports pedophilia and those who commit it by appointing a person that was friends with and aided a convicted pedophile, or he has catastrophically bad judgement and facilitated insider dealing and treacherous acts. Or both. It is my opinion he is damned either way.
It struck me not only as a "BP apology" but also more like the "I'm sorry that's how YOU feel" kind of mocking non-apology.
To double down by trying to then get on the front foot with his usual load of flannel that anybody who doesn't share his beliefs is a racist...... The problem is that regardless of optics, that IS what happened. He isn't downplaying that it happened or denying it, he's just trying to ignore it. It's incredibly reminiscent of tcap paedophiles. The way he is trying to downplay and gloss over it really sticks out. Maybe he is trying to save face by doing so but surely a lawyer like him would know the best thing to do is either to outright deny it or simply not talk about it and give a 'I will comment when we know the full extent of things' type statement. Talking about it but refusing to actually properly talk about it makes him look incredibly guilty. A lawyer would have a field day with this interview, somehow he doesn't see how though.

I really do think this situation is this year's paedo prince. An apology that is instantly seen through and makes you look worse for the association with a paedophile.

Showing actual remorse and actually apologising does make a difference though. It won't make people completely forget about it, however doing whatever the fuck he is doing right now will make it worse. You either slightly improve things or massively make them worse. Keir isn't in legal trouble over this for now at least, he's in pr trouble where the only thing that matters is how the public view your actions and right now his actions make the public think he is a remorseless paedophile.

And if you show remorse then courts will look more leniently on you, that's half the justification for letting paedophiles off early and shit. If you look at any of the cases of people being arrested for mean words online their lawyer will end with some faggy shit about how they were mislead and they have seen the error and bla bla bla, that's to lessen the impact, they'd be more likely to get a worse sentence without that. In actual court cases where there's no bias or agenda then the level of remorse the criminal feels can massively impact the sentence they get.
