A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Oh no, how will they ever afford to pay such an enormous and terrifying fine? :epik:

That’s a relief. Less to schlepp off to the Middle East to take part in another pointless war abroad that’ll see us flooded with millions more “refugees” we should feel guilty enough to give everything to including our children.

Speaking of which…

Why aren’t the punters being prosecuted too? Can’t sell trafficked kids if there’s no fucking perverts willing to fuck them.

Guilty childhood crush, there. Dommy mommy before I even (unfortunately) knew what that was. She was beautiful back in the day. Smart and stunning, and looked like she would brook none of your fucking nonsense, young man. What a woman.

Mind you, I thought Floella Benjamin was hot, and she can’t even spell (never let your childhood idols loose on social media).

Fellow BritFarmers, I had a dream last night that I bred pet bumble bees. Massive ones that were kept on leads. What does it all mean?

I saw an interview where Vanessa claims Rolf Harris pulled her skirt up and fingered her live on the Big Breakfast. The channel I saw it on claims it's lost media and can't be found now. The idea that someone would finger Vanessa let alone live on TV. And by a bloke who went after kids seems insane to me. Has there ever been any footage of it discovered or is she talking complete bollocks for attention?

When I'm PM my first act of parliament is finding every single person involved in the "Show me the moolah" adverts and have them flayed alive on public television.
I hope your second act will be doing the same to the people involved in the musical diarrhea advert.

He was very criticial of the BNP nearly 20 years ago, but his book published a few years ago is as close to "based" as you're ever going to get from any academic or book you can buy from a Waterstones.

Not a terrible pick if you're thinking realistically and not playing fantasy football.

Well he's a muslim so eye for an eye shit is just me becoming culturally more aware. I think we should drag him to a tree too. He's a paki so probably not got very long hair, guess the neck will have to do instead. I'm just over giving a shit about asylum status of these people, I do not care if they are here seeking asylum or they're illegally here or they're here legally. None of it fucking matters they all deserve death. They don't deserve prison or deportation or anything like that they just deserve to be hung.

It means that you should help the bees obviously. Bumblebees actually get outcompeted by the commercial honeybees. Rip up your lawn that does fuck all for anyone and replace it with something that actually looks good. Especially shruby type things not just annual flowers. Leave leaves and sticks under them too for nest material instead of getting rid of them. Incredibly easy and cheap to build bee nests for the bumblebee shaped bees that aren't bumblebees like carpenter bees and mason bees, good for kids to help with too. And leave out places for them to drink water, normally just a somewhat deep dish full of stones and full of water.

Life gets infinitely better when you just do not watch any ad at all. I forget the exact number but it was something around 10000 ads a day most people see and I will see at the absolute most 10 and that's from watching youtube while shitting.

Welcome to England where the relics of feudalism have caused the King to inherit England's largest illegal waste dump.

Will the media shame the environmentalist King into paying to clean up a waste site that wasn't his fault or will the taxpayer pay for some lazy rich dead old boomers laziness fuck over Wigan. Really England you let 25,000 metric tons of crap build up in your community and you did nothing.

Probably the taxpayer. I can't watch the video but I've found an article and underlined the relevant bits.
An investigation by Channel 4 News can exclusively reveal that an illegal waste dump near Wigan is on land largely owned by the Duchy of Lancaster, the King’s extensive private portfolio of properties and estates.

The site in Bickershaw, Wigan has been dubbed the UK’s “worst illegal waste dump” and sits at the heart of the mounting national crisis in illegal dumping.

The Duchy has told Channel 4 News that it is, in effect, exempt from regulations and duties to clean the site on account of an ancient feudal legal framework dating back some 750 years.

The Duchy appears to be shifting responsibility for the clean-up by offering it to Wigan Council, saying it does not have to take on any liabilities of the property due to ‘escheat’ law.

This refusal to take proactive action appears to contradict the Environment Agency’s own longstanding guidance that landowners are responsible for clearing illegal waste from their property.

“The Duchy legally does not take on any liabilities in relation to escheated property but the Duchy has offered to transfer the land to Wigan Council and to co-operate with them to try and resolve the issue…In terms of co-operation, we confirmed to the Council that the Duchy had no objection to the Council or Environment Agency using their statutory powers to enter onto the land for remediation purposes,” the Duchy said.

Investigating the landowners behind the Wigan site has exposed a complex system of land ownership which saw part of the dump come into King’s possession.

The Duchy of Lancaster collects assets of people who die without a will or next of kin within the historic County Palatine of Lancaster in northwest England, as well as assets of dissolved companies, under the ancient ‘bona vacantia’ legal principle. Proceeds go directly to the Duchy.

Channel 4 News now understands that the Environment Agency is limited in its powers unless the Duchy decides to take action.

If land is considered ‘onerous’, under escheat law, the Duchy does not have to inherit any liabilities associated with the property. The Wigan site falls into this category.

In a statement to the programme, the EA said: “We are doing everything in our powers to manage the site in Bickershaw and identify the perpetrators, including by launching a major criminal investigation and interviewing individuals under caution.”

On the Duchy’s offer to transfer the land to Wigan Council, the council said it “would need to consider the terms of any arrangement” as it was unlikely the value of the land would surpass the clean-up cost.

“As one of the impacted landowners, we are making efforts to clear our land and we continue to implore all other impacted landowners to take the necessary steps to fulfil their own obligations”, it added.

Tonight’s investigation has been welcomed by Baroness Sheehan, Chair of the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee.

Speaking to Channel 4 News, she said: “I take my hat off to Channel 4 for your investigative work. This is a revelation, and I think it will be interesting to see now that this is in the public domain and what happens next.

“I hope it’s going to give greater impetus to sort this out, because local residents really shouldn’t have to live with this on their doorstep. It backs onto gardens of the houses here, backs onto the playing field of the school there. And it’s just a living nightmare for them.

“The facts – as you’ve presented them – it does seem rather unfair that the taxpayer is yet again having to pick up the bill for cleaning up this dreadful, filthy mess.”

A Wigan Council spokesperson told Channel 4 News: “Local authorities have an obligation to ensure best value for residents. As such, the council would need to consider the terms of any arrangement since it is unlikely the value of the land would surpass the clean-up cost.

“Wigan Council fully understands the impact the illegal waste site at Bolton House Road has had, and continues to have, on local residents. As one of the impacted landowners, we are making efforts to clear our land and we continue to implore all other impacted landowners to take the necessary steps to fulfil their own obligations.”
What seems to be missing is when it passed into the Duchy's ownership. Does the video clarify?

The wording in the article along with no mentioned date suggests that it might be a recent one. So like you've noted someone owned it, it was used as a dump site like that other one that got posted here recently, the owner of the land passed with no will, the Duchy inherited it.

I'm honestly torn. On one hand I can't say I'm fond of a law that allows the Crown to just get land. On the other if the council got that land instead I am certain the lack of liability for the state of it when it enters their ownership would stay.

Weirdly it looks smaller than the other one that got posted here recently. I can't tell if it's just the aerial view or what but the area is not that massive. Might be that the bulk of the waste has been piled up so that makes a difference.

Also I've been to Bickershaw. The biggest thing in the place is the prison.
