A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I love how Rachel spent the first half of her budget trying to get people to set up business in the UK only for the second half to be her telling them how hard she's going to tax them.

Oh God. Just how bad is the pensions new if you've got a good workplace one? I just woke up, I've got to deal with a fecking roofer come over and I've got work tonight. I can't stomach thought of reading news. Can someone please break to me gently?

It's just another budget. It's not even as bad as the days when a budget was just "we're increasing tax on fags, booze and fuel"

Income tax bands frozen till 2031, so even if you do somehow manage to convince your boss you're due a pay rise, you're still not going to be much better off.

Me personally, I've been on the same pay for over 7 years now. I've had offers of promotions etc, but I never take it. I might as well just carry on as is, not bother straining myself, because if I go just a little bit higher I'll be hit by the higher rate tax and I won't actually be that much better off for more work. Dumb I know because inflation means I'm actually worse off now than I was when I first started getting this wage, but I refuse to contribute to the economy further just to fund people who can't be bothered working or sandniggers. This is what government can't see, productivity is collapsing because people like me refuse to work harder if I'm not going to see anything for it.

Actually going to be a bit worse off now because after having to deal with the NHS recently, have realised it's actually completely useless so will now be paying out for private health insurance for myself and family. I hope my son gets a good job and leaves this dead gay country, but everywhere else seems dead and gay too so I don't know what to do.

Be careful with private health insurance, because there’s a lot many don’t cover. Anything long-term, anything existing. It’s basically a cancer and physiotherapy service for many of them.

It's just another budget.
Speak for yourself, I filed dormancy papers for my company last week, hence being a bit quieter in this thread the past month or so. I cannot put into words how fucked the jobs market is. The recruiter I've been mates with for years has just stopped working for UK companies. Sits in his house in Devon working for American companies, is moving over there soon.

"It's just another budget" is sat in front of tens of thousands of people like me who get more taken from them every day and get absolutely nothing in return. I'm white, on the right side of 40 and own a house. If I can't make ends meet, I go out on the street. I won't get social housing.

Wasting my most productive years just waiting for a moment that I can show it and not get so heavily taxed that it's more beneficial for me to earn less than the an arbitrary number threshold which hasn't gone up again for the whatever year in a row it is. Three? Four years? Even as prices double, then triple?

Unsustainable and this will just be the pattern now. Firesale Britain where every budget is a natural disaster we just cope with.

The thing with hybrid and EV cars is fucking wonderful. People who drive those cars are the smuggest most insufferable cunts going. Their shitarse cars are heavier and destroy roads far faster than diesel and petrol vehicles.

Suffer, EV cunts.

They keep fucking us lot over who played the game and stuck by the rules. I honestly might just piss away and hide anything I own just prior to retirement and welch off the state.

20% tax on all private hire rides including Uber and Bolt - given that they were already threatening to hike prices if there were immigration crackdowns I bet getting an uber in London is going to double in price. She's also removing the £135 limit on low value imports?? Great.

Thieves is under fire for leaking the budget to the media, quote from the Deputy Leader, 'This has always been regarded as a supreme discourtesy to this House and all elected members' + the OBR leaks... we've said before in this thread but the amount of leakage does not imply a high amount of confidence in this budget.
Kemi Badenoch just now, on Thieves.
"All we've had is whining about misogyny and mansplaining. So let me explain woman to woman - people out there aren't complaining because she's female, they're complaining because she's utterly incompetent"
Love a good catfight

The one thing I expected\hoped for from Badenoch was to really put the shits up the government (Starmer in particular, obvs.) from the dispatch box. Both he and Reeves are emotionally fragile and cannot handle criticism at all well, and it should have been the one area where she could absolutely torch them based on her performances as a minister.

Finally, after a year, she has remembered how to do it.

Completely agree, only problem with that is that it'll just lead to them extending the same pay-per-mile scheme to petrol and diesel drivers at the next budget.

Genuinely had this urge too. I just can't bring myself to do it, it is literally too shameful for me to be able to live off of the state even though I've put in all of this money. I'd rather not be in the same car as every Somalian in this country when the next government gets in.

The worst part is that by the time we're retirement age, cash will likely be fully gone. You won't be able to go offline and hide.

This one is pretty mad because it just means if you buy some shitty clothes from abroad, you'd be liable to pay import taxes. Buy a Chinese hat? Pay Royal Mail to get your parcel, usually at least £10.

I unfortunately am not very capable of gentle, but I can give you the one sentence summary;

Pension contributions made through salary sacrifice schemes above an annual £2,000 threshold will no longer be free of national insurance contributions from April 2029.

I'm not going to go on the dole as a) I actually enjoy my job and b) even getting raped by the taxman as I am, I still earn more than I'd get in bennies, but by Christ a snide ADHD diagnosis and milking PIP and all the other in-work spack-cash is sounding more tempting.

Yeah this one absolutely fucked me off. I'm a bit of an environmentalist so i hate people who order tonnes of Shein, temu, tiktokshop nonsense, but taxing people for shit like this while allowing the masses to breed unwanted dole kids and, again, pumping millions into migrant hotel contracts is fucking lunacy- a predicted 500 million a year for a 'we'll tax everything, fuck you' policy? PL but thank god the chinese manufacturers I work with just lie about the customs value.
Ik theres another thread for the budget but those threads get plagued with Americans - 70billion overall tax increase + 1.8billion on Digital ID; idk what kind of cocaine they get in Parliament but please get me some.
The Met also cancelled the farmers protest in Whitehall and Farage is promising to foot the bill for any farmers arrested today; several have already been arrested.

I'm gonna have to change my pension contributions. This is maddening. I'm finally able to save well for a retirement that won't be funded by the state pension, and they're going to come after that, but oldiewonks aren't going to be affected by the change to cash ISA limits.

It was especially maddening to see members of the cabinet going into number ten laughing and smiling like this is hilarious. I know they despise us but do they have to be so blatant about it.
