A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

No we shouldn't. I don't want to have to carry a gun. I don't want to have to wear a stab vest. I don't want to have female only train cars. I do not want a way of dealing with rapists and murderers. I simply do not want them to exist in this country. I do not want a way to deal with foreigners coming here to rape and murder, we already have a way of dealing with that called deportation and/or a navy. I do not want to have to sink down to their level and be prepared to kill someone every time I leave the house. I do not want to live in fear to such a level that I have to carry a gun. Look at america. How many times does a shooting get stopped by a good guy with a gun? Hardly ever. Because the criminal will simply shoot first and you are dead. I fully support loosening gun laws in this country. But not so that I can make up for the shortcomings of the government. They steal all my fucking money already, I am not spending even more of it on ways to defend myself, they should simply remove the people that are the threat. Also shooting a gun inside a train is a fucking retarded thing to do. I think it was last week or the one before, some american cop shot a guy who pulled a gun and shot at them, one of the cops missed the guy, bullet went through a window 200m away and hit a toddler in the head and instantly killed her. Same for that attack on the jews a month ago. Bullets don't just stop inside someone, they go through them and into what is behind them, ie an innocent bystander, or you miss and the same happens. Yes, I would prefer if I could shoot someone trying to stab me, but that is not a world I want to live in optionally, nor is it a good idea to normalise that in crowded areas.

Nobody wants to carry guns, but with ever more murders and slaughters and no sign that this nightmare will end without dragging Starmer and co. out of the corridors of power, then the right to defend yourself is going to have the question of whether open carry should be allowed.

Honestly, in a situation like the Huntingdon train a taser is going to be as much use as Prince Andrew's antiperspirant.

Even if there had been someone onboard the train in the same carriage, with a pistol, with the training to use it, you're still going to have a bunch of people getting the shit stabbed out of them in the time between Rastus hulking out and starting stabbing and being put down like a rabid dog.

I'm a reasonable shot with a pistol, but at train carriage distances on a moving train, with a bunch of screaming hysterical people moving around in the intervening space not even John Wick is making those sorts of shots. You'd end up with random passengers getting new orifices.

We don't need stout umbrellas or cups of coffee or an armed train marshall on every carriage, we need the murderous foreigners removed from our midst.

There's zero chance of that with Starmer in charge, he's part of the problem.

Absolutely, 100%, we need to get rid of the troublemakers and either deport them or reopen the insane asylums - either will suffice. If they can't be civil and behave in a proper way then they get their rights removed until they learn the proper etiquette.

I am seriously worried that things will only accelerate and there will be loads more incidents in the near future because those in charge are too chicken shit to say that these illegals are murderers are rapists.

The problem is if you do sink to that level you cannot easily get out of it. That's what's happened in america. They cannot control the numbers of black people going out shooting people, they cannot try to remove guns because the criminals will continue to have them. Their normal is having to deal with randomly you could just catch a stray bullet and you are dead. They cannot get out of that. If we sink to that level we also will not get out of it. It will become the new normal. We will go from talking about chainmail and umbrellas to which plate is the best. If you open that pandoras box you are not going to close it. It does not matter what the weapon is, doesn't matter if we have stabbings or shootings or what, it boils down to a problem with certain demographics. It's not even america where you can point at school shootings and shit like that, over here it is almost 100% not English people doing this shit.

The second you make guns easily accessible to the public is the second they also start getting 'lost' or 'stolen' and now the mass stabbings that normally don't have many victims suddenly have double the victim count and the wounds become harder to deal with medically.

I'm just worried that after Huntingdon, Southport etc. that another Pandora's Box has been opened.

I have zero faith in the Government to do anything productive and take us back to days where we didn't have to wonder if the person walking past us isn't going to cause us severe harm.

It's just very depressing and concerning that this decade has been nothing but shit - Covid, lockdowns, stabbings, murders....

We have had these sorts of terrorists attacks for almost two decades. We have had this shit start when the rIRA stopped. There was a brief calm period for a while but this isn't something that just started. Even if it was, that still doesn't mean giving out guns to everyone is going to fix anything other than maybe give people a false sense of security. The pandora's box that we have opened is not a migrant crime one, it's the seemingly troubles two boogaloo one.

I don't either. But on that same thread, I do not trust the government to only give guns to people who aren't violent rapists and murderers. They are willing to let them in to your communities, they will be willing to let them use guns too. If they cannot keep these people out of the country then what makes you think they would keep them out of anything at all? They do not care about you. Be that flooding you with murderers or not checking the person they're giving a gun to isn't a murderer.

If we lived in a nice high trust society then yes, I would say daily carrying a gun is good. But we don't. As you say, I do not trust the people near me to not be violent psychopaths. Me being able to shoot them would not change that because I would not know they want to shoot me until they already have a gun pointed at me, in which case trying to draw my own gun is suicide. It just seems like a kneejerk reaction. Especially when americans say the exact same shit and even though they have guns it still hasn't fixed shit. Guns are good when your enemy is the government, they are good at reminding them that they are mortal and that they only exist because it is the will of the people, or to fight occupation in a militia ala 1916. Guns are not good when the enemy is everyone around you (and the government). Guns are good when it's 'formal', when there is a declaration of fighting and everyone is on the same page. Not when you're just getting randomly shot because you looked at someone the wrong way or wore the hijab wrong. Unless you're getting up there ringing the bell and announcing tnd with a squad of machinegunners the only thing that guns would do in this country is driveby shootings and more meaningless violence.
 
I do think it's really funny how people are thinking that the future of trains is going to be with manned metal detectors on every station, it just shows how completely out of touch the average middle class person is if they can't grasp that stations smaller than Birmingham New Street exist.

I'm sure everyone here has been on a train and gone "who the absolute fuck would get off here? it's a tiny station in the middle of nowhere" so the idea that it'd somehow be upscaled to some surveillence state monster station is just completely impossible. Even funnier, every single time I've got off at Birmingham New Street, the ticket barriers were down and people were just walking freely in and out, so if one of the largest stations in the UK can't do it then good luck getting it done in Wrexham or Oxenholme or Chorley or Brigg or Selby etc.

I don't know how much I can say, but I have seen a lot of stops in villages where I can count the number of streets on one hand. The train stops are literally concrete slabs in the middle of nowhere with a single little shelter that normally stinks of piss. There isn't even anywhere you can put a metal detector, it's literally just a gate that you have to close yourself.

If you're ever in a situation you either know what you're doing or you don't, and you should be running the fuck away regardless. Forget the maglites; I've done just fine with shopping baskets before, but nothing can make up for actual backup. If you're in hostile territory you shouldn't be wandering alone simple as.
