A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'd also recommend them getting in touch with their MP if possible. Also for him to start proactively getting feedback on applications. If one comes back as having even a whiff of ageism then good, he can use it to his advantage.

The system is a game and you have to play within their rules which sucks a barrel of dick.

That was absolutely my biggest nightmare when I was unemployed last year. Being sanctioned for not "doing enough" to find a job (though I'd argue 2 hours a day is a paltry amount. I was doing a solid 7 hours. Applying, tittivating with my CV, doing cover letters, researching companies I was applying for. 2 hours is nothing).

If he's told the Job Center he's doing 2 hours a day then I guarantee that is why he's being investigated.

It’s easy to get signed off with depression. Just tell him to go to his GP and lay it on thick. Lay off the suicidal ideation, no point risking getting sectioned.

Tell him to avoid group therapy at all costs if it’s suggested by the GP. I knew someone who faked depression to get an extended holiday at his employer’s expense. GP had him going to a group therapy thing were he had to listen to guys talking about being bummed as kids, then that actually started fucking with his mental health.

Also, do not take any of the proscribed tablets.

If the Job Centre think he’s a looney they’ll lay off him.

I’m fortunate as I’ve only ever signed on once and that was during Covid when they didn’t care and it was just a box ticking exercise.

The people I’ve known that have been unemployed through no fault of their own and had a professional background all had the Job Centre fuck with them at some point.

Tell him to keep searching whilst he is pretending to be depressed though. I’ve seen people sucked into the NEET life and it really fucks them.

Isn't it crazy how 'i feel a bit sad' is now a lifetime of several types of pills and a person on call at any time to talk to if you're sad? And isn't it crazy how they deliberately under prescribe said pills to draw out the treatment because their 'treatment' is so retarded that they cannot give people the motivation to fix their life without also making them want to kill themselves.

Honestly I don't see much of a difference between two hours and seven. If it was 20 minutes then maybe. But how many more jobs can I apply to in that time? I could apply to every job in my city in two hours let alone two hours for more than a day. If you've applied to everything what more can you do?

If only everyone was like that. If only we didn't have fucking endless amounts of people who think that fucking with the system is an accomplishment. That scamming the system is something you should be proud of.

I could apply to every job in my city in two hours let alone two hours for more than a day. If you've applied to everything what more can you do?

I feel for him. At his age his chances through cold application are very low. He needs to be going through everyone he’s ever worked positively with and getting a list of contacts, then talking to them and seeing if they have a referral scheme. Companies pay good money for in-house-origin referrals.
Older engineers are expensive.
He should also go to his GP and get notes as being very depressed with it all and cite jobcentre pressure and DWP as part of that. Set a paper trail. Make sure it’s in his notes.
On his next visit to JC he needs to tell them he’s doing 6-7 hours a day searching, has seen his GP and been diagnosed with depression from the stress of his interactions and the DWP investigation. Make sure it’s written down in their system - email them with it if he has to so he has a paper trail.
He does want to work and I’m sure doesn’t want to game the system but the system will crush him so he needs to defend himself.
Best of luck to him. I read this morning that 1/6 UC recipients is an immigrant. That’s is fucking disgraceful, and they go after honest people who are genuinely looking to get back into work
