A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

My local stopped advertising for staff and just as if people know someone looking for work as they get swamped with so many applications in one day if it’s in a job centre it’s not manageable to review the CVs.

(I find the framing of Nepal's riots in western media being a 'Gen Z revolution' a bit odd, given the corruption and general dissatisfaction, but thats neither here nor there). I guess we will see what this weekend holds.

I dont know much about her tbh. Shes one of the older guard, I know that, but not muck else. I presume she’s not on board with some part of modern insanity and thus has been targeted? Has she, god forbid, just been working for her constituents rather than taking a stance on Gaza or something?

I've always wondered how the Labour party manages to maintain any sort of cohesion, if you look at all of the disparate elements involved.

You've got...

Fag gang, jew gang, islam gang, trade union gang, old reds, new reds, Blairites, greens that actually want political power... I'm sure you could drill down into any of those and find further sub-factions. It'd almost be worth signing up just to be a fly on the wall.

I think she's seen as pro-Israel or at least sympathetic of Jewish Voice for Israel.

If this is something you think about for your own kids in the future, one thing I have noticed with friends who have kids old enough to work, is that those who do have a job, have it through their childhood hobbies. Ones where the hobby is part of the skillset needed for the job. One is a part-time lifeguard after coming up through their swim club, a couple work for a sports facility they lived half their childhood at, etc. It's not so easy to get a job if you're an anonymous applicant, but for my friends' kids, they were just asked by the manager/owner if they wanted a job and slotted in when there was a vacancy.

Agreed, much as I hate Labour I will never say that violence is the way - that makes people who resort to it as bad as the idiot who killed Charlie Kirk yesterday.

Yes, some people are beyond debating with and some probably deserve zero sympathy - but we cannot descend to their level. Having empathy is the one thing which prevents us from being like them.

You're looking for an answer while ignoring the obvious one. Why would an anti-Jewish faction attack the 2nd in command of the Jewish puppeteers of the government? Because she was second in command of the Jewish puppeteers of the government.

Sympathetic? She was the Israeli voice in the UK.

She also seems to have been shadow child minister which I assume she was using to cover up rape gangs at some point. But I don't know the actual role job titles mean so I might be wrong on that.
