A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I think it’s catastrophic. As a student I had multiple casual jobs to get by; bar work, retail, cleaning etc. It was usually fairly easy to pick up. Not the most fun work, cleaning out lines in a pub cellar and dealing with drunks, or retail fun, but needs must and i had to to pay my rent through uni and eat. (Grants were way less than 2k a year at that point, they froze them and created the SLC. ) I could usually find a job within a week or so of looking and once I had one somewhere I was always asked back.
I think all those low wage jobs are far harder to get now. I feel really sorry for kids

I did tons of work in bars during term time, and building sites and factories in the holidays.

They’re the jobs that they import foreigners to do now. Thank Christ I didn’t have to compete with minimum wage dead eyed 80 iq Poles at the time and got decent money.
 
I got my first job at 16, a week after I finished my GCSEs. Doing the tea round in a nursing home weekend mornings, and one night a week doing clean up after tea was served.

I then left school after my A Levels and worked as a postie (back in day when push bike rounds were a thing) and cleaning offices on an evening in the week.

Even cleaning jobs are hogged by the fucking illegals these days. Royal Mail leas so but niggers are lazy and posties are still quite racist.

Kids these days are being betrayed by the cunts in power. Middle class wankers who can't stomach the thought of little Noah or Mathilda doing a bit of graft don't care because they care more about The Good Girl/Boy Points they get from being "kind" online than anything else

I’m old enough to have being doing deadend jobs pre-Brexit in Norf FC. That was decades before the Boriswave. There was a point Poles took all those jobs at minimum wage years after I did them and made it so it wasn’t worth a white man’s time and energy.

Just because the only person you have to compete for work with is Peter Dinklage doesn’t mean you can’t understand the struggle of middle aged white men.

After the 2024 Labour win, she spent about a week going around saying how she would've loved a job. Now she drops out of the Labour deputy leadership race with 13 nominations out of 80 and the BBC run the story with this photo which needs absolutely no "fuck my shit up, fam" edit.

With Uber and delivery companies threatening to up prices if they can't import illegal workers anymore it's never more obvious to me that immigrants "are stealing our jobs". The insistence that we NEED foreign workers never sat right with me- do you know how many white benefits scroungers, or genuinely unemployed down on his/her luck, there are who could do with some on the job training and a chance to be a farmhand or security guard or whatever they keep saying we NEED immigrants for? I would even say its racist, how much they insist that only immigrants can do these 'menial' tasks that 'no Brit would want to do'.
Knew a white lad from Merseyside, uni degree, he had sent over 300 applications on Indeed to every minimum wage bar, retail, agency, dog sitting, cinema worker, bucket rattler, etc etc, job on there. Got called back for one, dressing as spiderman for kids birthday parties. Whether it's the fact none of these job listings are real or the amount of applicants, its incredibly rough out there for kids.

I'd hoped they would finally have put this twat to bed with the Global Counsel business, but he somehow managed to dodge that bullet completely.

UPDATE: Our Ambassador to the US has just been sacked after an email was published showing that he considered Epstein a strong friend even after he was convicted of noncery.

He's unlikely to make a career comeback after this, but I'm sure he'll not suffer any privations.

I also don't think Starmer will be able to wiggle out of this very easily. Mandelson's relationship with Epstein was well known even before his appointment - it was raised at the time as a reason not to appoint him.

I hope this one sticks to Starmer. Every time Mandelson has been caught doing something subversive it has always come out later that everyone knew (on both sides).

I'd like to think that this is blue team making a concerted effort to finally bury this bastard. Though we both know this is just another thing that happened on Starmer's watch that they can take advantage of.

It still funny to see even the furniture of the House step up to the mic to pour some petrol on.

I lost my job about 3 weeks ago now and from all the applying I have done both for jobs in my chosen profession and just general jobs I was applying for to kill time until something else came along, the job market is being utterly destroyed by foreign labour. Almost every job I've applied to that has actually responded to let me know I didn't get the job has said the same thing "due to a high frequency of applicants". Almost every single one has said this in their reply due to the sheer amount of people applying for these jobs (a lot of these aren't even minimum wage stuff either).

I refresh job sites every morning like Indeed and there's barely ever any new listings appearing on there or other sites. It's quickly turning into hundreds of thousands of people all fighting over a hand full of jobs and were brining over more and more people who will not only do these jobs cheaper then you will but the company gets to check off a bunch of tick boxes for having this person work for them. I know from where I was working that I was made redundant so that they could out source my role and from what I have heard they did and I can imagine a lot of other places did the same.

My father said Blair destroyed his industry in the 90's by opening up the English job market to the world and I guess were getting the same done to us but some how even worse.

He can be a wog and right. Cleaning jobs used to be done by middle age women and when the polish started to come in they took all those over. There's a reason we meet Polish toilet washer. They did an okay job, cost less and weren't as much trouble as the other invaders. Usually their crimes were drug related or battering other foreigners when they got pissed.

Whatever happened to all the news stories of acid attacks? Did they get covered up?

Does going to places and asking if they're hiring help? I know it's a boomer meme but it has some merit. If you appear and you're not a paki applying online places sick of pakis might hire you.

In the current year I think the only real option is to find a way to run your own business. There is still money is running a local shop for local people but you need to find a niche.
