A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

After a very busy few days, I've finally released the first version of my UK Migrant Crime tracker map.



I am asking for your weaponised autism to help get this map populated! Come and contribute in the thread or find the website link in the thread below.

Thank you for making this. Might it be worth having a section to add when the crime took place? It's very difficult to find out when the migrants came to the country.

FYI Sadeq Nikzad in Falkirk arrived sometime in 2023 according to this article.

news articles give the date of the crime. It's part of the verifying process I assume.

Would be interesting if the times could be linked up to when they moved them to the area. See how quickly these crimes happen and if there's a cycle. Imagine the fury if it turned out every hotel had a rape 1 week after they were put there.

Too early. No point in sending them a link to a map without all the data on it yet. Also you should probably put a list of the types of crime it involves first too, otherwise people will look at it and assume it's just petty shit.

Had this in development earlier, almost ready to release. I'll take the hit and go back through and populate these fields, my fault forgetting it in V1.

80% of the cases I've skimmed through tonight have been rape. I want to also make sure we're recording the various Albanian cannabis growers in Axminster or the...well, it's almost literally just rapists from Africa and Albanians producing drugs.

When people hear migrant crime it defaults to rape or murder. That's what people expect when the term is used. It's never petty stuff they think of. People aren't as stupid as you think they are. They don't say it out loud in crowds because it's illegal to do so. In private everyone says it.

It varies from hotel to hotel. Most have their food brought in (Brake Bros have the contract as far as I'm aware), in rare cases some have fully staffed kitchens and the ones that house families usually open up their kitchen facilities to the residents for them to prepare their own food.

Some, like the Cedar Court Hotel in Wakefield, let the residents operate takeaway businesses (the local council had no problem licensing them). Just look up Big Boi Burgers. Virtually all of them have Deliveroo and Uber Eats delivery bikes parked somewhere on the grounds.

It isn't just large hotel chains involved in this. Individual hotel businesses have been approached too. Some of them tell the Home Office to fuck off (like the owner of the Camelot Castle Hotel in Cornwall), but sadly a lot of them just saw pound signs after COVID fucked over the hotel/tourism industry.

One interesting thing to note is that a lot of the people involved in this are jeets. From what I've seen so far, Securitas provides the bulk of the security. They are all jeets and Africans of some description. I can count on one hand how many White security guards I've seen. The same can be said of the hotel staff. Also, you have the IHG Group and IBIS Hotels (who have a big share in this) that have mostly jeet senior staff in the UK.
