A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Am I getting too cynical? The news article I read about the arrests of three people in connection with the Letby case said they knew the names of those people, but were choosing not to publish them.

Whenever I see that,my brain automatically autocorrects it to "they're not white; they have non-British names; and they're recent additions to the place.

Because it keeps happening. Remember when a car rammed through a crowd in Liverpool and you knew he was white within about 2 hours and every paper, news site and TV show was blaring "WHITE WHITE WHITE". Compare that to Southport as the stereotypical answer but a recent one would be the known sex offender jeet trying to marry a young girl at Disney land which every headline was "appears to be British" or "British citizen" up until we got his name and mugshot a week later?

It's not Cynical to notice.

Three arrests in Letby hospital investigation

Three former senior staff at the hospital where nurse Lucy Letby murdered seven babies and attempted to kill seven others have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.

I was waiting for something like this to happen. Regardless of your position on whether are Lucy was innocent or guilty, no way was she the only one responsible. More to come I think.

This is potentially huge. Putting aside whether or not Letby did anything, if it comes to light that the entire ward was basically on it, whether through negligence or malpractice, I'd expect it to blow the lid off the NHS in a spectacular way.

Normally I'd agree but I don't think so in this case. When this has been reported on before, all the senior staff were the typical unremarkable laptop operator types, and white. In fact I think it was actually a brown who first raised the alarm, and he ended up getting threatened with his job to shut the fuck up.

Of course these latest arrests might just be another layer of the vast NHS management onion so who knows.

Letby being found innocent after an appeal would be incredibly spicy, mainly because everyone who was suspicious of the evidence was branded a right wing conspiracy theorist who can't grasp that white people can be evil.

It'd be an interesting climbdown of "I always knew she was innocent, please don't quote what I said 6 months ago"

Who do you think will play her in the Netflix adaptation?

I nominate Sheridan Smith
1751377020811.webp
She played Julie Bushby in a Karen Matthews drama; she was allegedly going to play her, but elected for Bushby instead because she did not want to be associated with being Karen Matthews.

I just want overblown drama, an example of a scene

The camera framed Lucy with a flickering light, sound of light is audible

A coo can be heard, camera framed on Lucy

The camera pans to the baby

Lucy smirks ala Dreamworks, suspenseful

The camera shows feet walking in a hospital corridor.

Lucy panics, grabbing a blanket covering the baby.

Suspenseful music plays

Lucy looking back hurridly screaming "why won't you fucking die"

We can make this the new adolescence, guys.

Eh, I view it as either option, deranged baby killer or government organisation conspiracy. Both are pretty spicy and sadly there are dead kids but they will be replaced in due course by rape babies of Paleistinians we are taking in.

What if it's half and half?
She personally believes she got a child/twins killed. Maybe this is true, maybe it's not, her diary corroborates a narrative that she fully believes she did but she even expresses doubt. From her diary:
"I killed them. I don't know if I killed them. Maybe I did. Maybe this is down to me."
From a conspiracy angle, the hospital/police pawning some of the extra unexplained deaths onto her since it doesn't make the hospital personally liable, seems viable. It was a while back but Nottingham hospital compensated a couple 3 million pounds for the accidental death of a baby they could've easily saved; if one hospital got a half-dozen or more killed via negligence that'd cause both a massive scandal, provoke a nationwide audit/inspection into the NHS (probably), and ultimately cause a larger headache than one baby-killer with a higher kill count than Jack the Ripper.

A lie is best muddied with some truth.
Letby killed or got killed via personal negligence a child or two. So what's an extra 4 or 10? Same difference in the end.

I don't really have an opinion it.

I really appreciate how chill this thread is compared to the USA one - no kike fighting, no Trump fighting, it's just discussing things as they happen.

You'd be amazed the effects of freshly baked goods from a nation wide bakery chain can have on civil discourse.

Thread tax. I wish Rachel Reeves would just fuck off at this point. I'd take a blind seuth sayer using goats entrails over this dumb bitch.

Major blow for savers as Reeves is set to slash tax-free cash Isa allowance

Savers are set to lose a chunk of their tax-free cash individual savings account allowance as the Treasury prepares to take an axe to the £20,000 limit.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves poised to cave into lobbying by City firms in a move that could affect millions of people who use Isas.

Individuals can currently put £20,000 a year into the tax-free saving and investing vehicles, choosing how to split the limit between cash and stocks and shares

However, critics insist the volume of cash Isa savings is holding the stock market back, arguing that the Treasury's £7billion a year tax break should be targeted to encourage investment.

But the investment firms lobbying for a cut to the cash Isa allowance are massively outweighed by savings and investing experts who argue that cutting the cash Isa allowance will not boost investment in the UK stock market.

Ms Reeves has been scrambling to find ways of boosting growth, in the hope that it can help her balance the government's books.

But savers are furious at the idea of cutting the allowance, with a huge response to the Mail and This is Money's Hands of our Cash Isa campaign.

The backlash is another headache for Keir Starmer as he faces the biggest Labour revolt of his premiership so far. Dozens of MPs are vowing to oppose curbs to benefits - despite the PM already having slashed the £5billion package of savings in half in a bid to appease left-wingers.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to cave into lobbying by City firms in two weeks¿ time and announce a cut to the allowance in her Mansion House speech on July 15

Some 12.4 million adults hold cash accounts to shield their nest egg from the taxman. Trading platform IG has called for the cash wrapper to be 'scrapped altogether.'

In May, Ms Reeves confirmed the overall £20,000 limit would remain in place.

But she stopped short of stating the amount that can be kept in cash will also stay at this level. The Treasury repeated this when approached for comment.

Ms Reeves said: 'It's really important that we support people to save, to achieve their aspirations.

'I'm not going to reduce the £20,000 Isa limit but I do want people to get better returns on their savings, whether that's in a pension or in their day-to-day savings.'

If Rachel Reeves cut the cash Isa allowance, would it matter to you?

Yes

No
The Government wants to reform the Isa system to encourage more people to plough money into the stock market to bolster the UK's lacklustre retail investing culture.

It is hoped the move will spark more investment into London-listed stocks, which will support the Government's growth agenda.

Insiders say the Treasury previously discussed cutting the cash Isa allowance to as low as £5,000 but it is understood they are still considering the threshold.

The Building Societies Association warned earlier this year that savers rely on the tax wrappers to achieve their savings goals but also claimed any curtailment could lead to a mortgage shortage and a hike to borrowing costs.

In response to the Mail's Hands Off Our Cash Isa campaign, many readers said they shouldn't be penalised for preferring safe cash savings over risky stock holdings.

The Exchequer will rake more money into its coffers if savers breach their Personal Savings Allowance rather than investing.

Cash Isa raid set against bleak UK finances

The apparent move by Ms Reeves comes amid a bleak backdrop for the public finances.

Fears are mounting that the Chancellor will have to hike taxes again to fill a burgeoning black hole in the government's spending plans.

The situation has been worsened by Keir Starmer's humiliating U-turns on winter fuel and health and disability benefits.

Those two changes alone could leave the Treasury having to find another £4billion a year by the end of the Parliament, while pressure is ramping up for more spending on defence.

Ms Reeves was handed some much-needed relief yesterday as the economy was confirmed as growing 0.7 per cent in the first quarter.

Official figures showed the powerhouse services sector expanding by 0.7 per cent between January and March.

Production was also up 1.3 per cent over the three months, although construction recorded a mediocre 0.3 per cent improvement. Overall the expansion was the best in a year.

However, economists have been warning that a slowdown is already happening after the impact of Labour's huge tax raid on businesses and Donald Trump's trade war. GDP fell by 0.3 per cent in April

You talked about genetic problems, I asked like what? You want to talk about Polynesian people we can talk about a propensity to diabetes. You want to talk about Pakistani communities in Bradford, you can debate birth rates. You want to say Shia Islam is at odds with Western values you can explain that. But you said that Iranian ancestry is introducing genetic problems. So... like what?

Old Persian man just wants to know what you meant.

Around 40% of their population today was produced from consanguineous marriage. They're a slightly less retarded and disabled species of Muslim, but retarded and disabled all the same.

Fuck off, nigger. At least go to bat for a race of foreigners who don't practise crawling all over one another like a box of retarded hamsters.

Maybe she was just nuts lmao?
She's a nurse, statistically she's got at least one serious condition that requires anti-psychotics or hasn't been diagnosed yet.

I've never seen such a high concentration of nutcases than when I was working adjacent to the NHS and had to mix with them.

If you're a deviant they're the best shag you'll ever have at the absolute cost of your sanity as they'll dig their claws in because they're termially codependent

I have no idea what my blazing hot take on Letby was, but whatever it was I stick with it.
I think mine was guilty as sin but I’ll accept being wrong if the evidence is there.

Oh somebody think of the investment bankers!

Ffs, i don’t care what you want you rapacious slimebags. We are taxed and taxed and you and your ilk have caused countless recessions. Let Joe Public put some money aside safely to save for a rainy day or their family future. Keep your filthy chitinous claws off it.

She personally believes she got a child/twins killed. Maybe this is true, maybe it's not, her diary corroborates a narrative that she fully believes she did but she even expresses doubt. From her diary:
That diary entry was written after she'd been removed from the ward, forbidden to talk to her colleagues (who were probably also her friends given nursing culture) and was being faced with the prospect of having babies deaths lain at her door. According to the Guardian she was also directed to write things out in a diary by counsellors. It's an outpouring of stream of consciousness. About a line later she says "I didn't kill them".

We raise people in this country into all sorts of beliefs about repressed memories, subconscious actions, all sorts of crap that makes people doubt themselves and wonder if their actions are really their own. I ascribe pretty much no weight to things written by a girl who has been isolated from friends and colleagues, put under tremendous pressure and is being told to write out every thought in her head by counsellors. All her diary says to me is that she's going to pieces under accusations and isolation.

If you're a deviant they're the best shag you'll ever have at the absolute cost of your sanity as they'll dig their claws in because they're termially codependent
I can confirm this. Twice in fact because I didn't learn with the first one.
