A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

James O'Brien is quite possibly the most insufferably smug faggot on the radio, and that's all the acknowledgment I'm going to give him because its more than he deserves. I would have appreciated some warning about the egg-headed troon jumpscare from Novara Media though:

Was walking past Pound Bakery earlier and in a clearly inferior to Greggs move they had a massive sign up in the window about their halal options. Greggs has a halal option, its called a vegan sausage roll.

Morning chaps, bit of a downer to start the day. First confirmed farmer suicide as a result of the Reeves budget:

A farmer took his own life the day before the government's Budget after weeks of worrying about looming changes to inheritance tax, an inquest has heard.
John Charlesworth's son said he believed his father wanted to "beat" the government's proposals and "save the farm for future generations".
Mr Charlesworth, 78, who went by his middle name Philip, was found dead by his son Jonathan Charlesworth, 47, in a barn on their farm in Silkstone, Barnsley, on October 29 last year.
At Sheffield Coroner's Court on Thursday, coroner Tanyka Rawden recorded a verdict of suicide.
The inquest heard Mr Charlesworth had been struggling to care for his wife, who had severe dementia and cancer.
The hearing was told that in the months before Chancellor Rachel Reeves' Budget he had been "growing more and more anxious about inheritance tax and the implications for the farm".

Anyone know much about probate law here? I don't think he'll have beaten the system as the estate hasn't been passed on yet.

Also, be very sceptical if anyone tells you someone committed suicide for [x] reason. There's usually a ton of other stuff going on. Unless there's a suicide note saying "fuck Reeves lol" it's easier for his someone to blame the government than realise a loved one was in so much mental turmoil and you didn't do anything about it.

Don't forget he was also caring for his dementia-ridden wife. Heartbreaking either way you cut it, but I bet the budget didn't help.

It must be fucking horrible to be a politician and be aware that your decisions have either contributed to or outright killed someone.

I bet it makes most of them rock hard. Reeves is probably flicking her bean thinking about it right now.
That's the worst part. Does that weigh on their conscience? Do they lose sleep over it? Probably not.

Users of the infamous neo-Nazi right wing website KiwiFarms (100 confirmed kills) officially have more empathy for fellow man than an elected politician on £100k a year. Funny that.

@Crunkle don't forget that we still hear about that head teacher who killed herself because of the Ofsted review and they have been forced to make changes because of it.

This suicide will be buried in the news by comparison.
Oh shit yeah, great point. That happened like three years ago yet the Ofsted updates crop up in the news every other month. That's a fallen woman girlboss career lady though, not a filthy, uneducated northern farmer.

A lot depends on who the terms of his will (assuming he has one), however, regardless of circumstances any new laws would not apply as the date of his death is fixed, meaning the applicable law is that at the time of death.

Any retroactive effect would throw the legal works into a crazy spiral and is incredibly unlikely. So for all purposes my guy beat the system.

My local weatherman used to be Fred Talbot, not just a gay but a pederast!
Ours is gay too

I’m quite sure she feels mild annoyance at the fact she looks bad in a news story and that’s it. You don’t get to be a politician without having all human feeling removed, of they had any kind of empathy for the people their policies impact, the country would not be in the mess it’s in. I hope he haunts her.

Yeah I went through that bollocks a couple of years ago as a joint executor (but effectively sole) so it's fairly fresh. As you say, when you die mostly isn't going to matter, what matters is when the estate is actually settled which can be quite some time later. This really looks like a case of someone getting themselves whipped up about upcoming changes, deciding to off themselves to try and get ahead of it, but ultimately it's just a waste.

Imagine having a seethe session on live TV about an opponent with 5 MPs, 5 years before an election. Live

He thought this was a good idea...
This, 100%. This government might be even more middle-of-the-road than May's government in that it tries to please everybody. Standing in the middle of the road means you get hit from both sides; Labour are now being called racists by your typical Guardian readers, and pathetic lefties by everyone else.

Scotland is really interesting at the moment with the SNP calling that Reform Facism summit. Not a smart way of defending against a party which are very likely to become the second largest party in Heroinland and you'll have to work with every day. All other parties always chat shit about stemming far-right sentiment but then will spend taxpayer £ to create a summit about Reform UK (which is - let's be honest - campaigning), fuelling all of the insane Antifa types who then start chucking stuff at anyone right of Lenin.

We exist on the permanent and shifting sands between "Nothing ever happens" and "Something might happen in four years". But obviously, Farage will fuck it up and start stabbing all of his Reform buddies in the back as expected.

No, It's national treasure "White Dee", famous for her acting role on "Benefits Street".

She also talked with Mr Nigel.

I reckon she'd make a smashing chancellor,
Given the choice of her or Rachel Thieves, give me Dee any day.
