A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It's a global trend that people who aren't white are getting more conservative, Sunak was not a bad leader, he course corrected pretty quickly and from the end of last year had a good cabinet, Kemi was a member of which too and Hunt is probably one of the most underrated Chancellors that we have had. Honestly too hearing her speak she actually has conviction with what she says and its why I softened to Sunak and Hunt.

I dunno, I'm over 30 and I'm an unironic Thatch fan. Remember two things:
- Even northern mining towns that Thatcher destroyed voted Tory in 2019 because they believed Boris' lies about lowering immigration.
- Old people vote Tory

That said, though, I'm not sure if she can win the next election because there is so much work to be done to repair the Tories and it will take more than 4 years. It may not be a good leadership context for her to win because the Tory leadership is a poison chalice right now. Bear in mind, though, that the next election is impossible to call. Labour have a big majority but no real mandate, they've declared war on the white working class who proved in 2019 that they will vote Tory if they think they'll cut immigration, and they're already massively unpopular and that's before their tax rises hit. Reform are a wildcard, Badenoch kinda steals Farage's clothes politically and she doesn't have his electoral baggage. Anything could happen.

I think you're reading too much into this. This is just a cheap jab at Labour for their hypocrisy. I don't like James Cleverly at all, I think he's obnoxious, but the Tories would be fools not to use Badenoch's skin colour to bash the Labour party because they have literally no answer to it.

But that's the dilemma isn't it, at least from what I understand of British history. Thatcher's legacy, regardless of the merit of her policies (which it could be argued reflected common sense and trends of the time) was the effective defanging of the working class and the only thing that might overcome that stain on the conservatives is that the immigration issue has reached a point of no return. It's just such a mind fuck of what is essentially a black nationalist of a white country that I don't think she's going to last.

Most if not all the issues the west and even the world has faced since the end of WW2 has been because of rich white people and some jews and people's response to someone who has consistently called out the issues we face and wants to fix them is to whine and cry that said person isn't paler than fucking casper.

I'm of the opinion that the most fundamental problems facing the west stem from the complete dissolution of any kind of national identity, in large part due to the massive population inflation that blew up existing, tight-knit communities with swathes of foreign people. Someone from one of those new populations, from no direct fault of their own (especially if they are a 2nd-gen+ immigrant), is part of that issue, even if it was facilitated in the beginning by white politicians. And there's no way for them to have a position on it that isn't predominantly informed by their own rational self interest. Any foreign person that advocates for deporting themselves, for example, is either lying or an insane person.

In the US, recent African immigrants are generally perfectly fine. They're usually law abiding and gainfully employed.

It's our native blacks, or occasionally Jamaicans (any carribean islanders), that are problematic. Second generation immigrants take on aspects of the local black culture (raise your fucking kids), but fresh off the boat? Really not a problem.

Haitians and anyone sneaking in over the southern border are shit though.

If I could swap 90% of our home grown blacks with Africans, I'd do so in a heartbeat.
