A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Yeah I know some dogs get nervous, but it’s not universal. My point is they aren’t banning it because poor Fido might be upset, they’re banning them because the plebs can’t possibly have access to Guy fawkes’s favourite substance.
We used to set fireworks off when I was younger (fairly safely too, various dads would set it all up) and now that would be a criminal offence. The creeping loss of freedom needs to stop
We know why they're doing it but don't ignore that some people's dogs don't like loud bangs.

I'm also irritated by fireworks but I would be fine with it if it was just kept to the evening of the 5th or the closest friday/saturday. It's an every night for 2-3 weeks around where I am, partly bc of Diwali. Dogs and veterans probably get stressed if it's every night, I know I do.

East Asian food is becoming far more popular recently. I'm seeing Thai and Japanese for everywhere these days, I doubt katsu will be out Indian curry in terms of popularity but it's getting there.
I think a lot of it is down to Wagamama. Loads of people do Katsu curry out of there on a Friday for lunch in London. That's been popular for at least a decade. The alternative Friday treat for the sandwich brigade is a burrito from Wahaca.
I can remember the days when you'd get change from a tenner for either of those, nowadays they are £15 each.

Apparently Katsu Curry is becoming a big thing here?
Japanese curry originated from a recipe used by the Royal Navy so it's basically British already, if anything it's moreso that we're rediscovering it than embracing something that's actually new.

I cannot imagine what sort of horrid atrocity Bri'ish "Thai" is considering any sort of flavor causes Bongs to undergo spontaneous combustion.

It is pretty much just thicker chip shop curry sauce, but without the soggy raisins and with a little more brown.

So the Katsu thing has a few components to it.
1) Its a really cheap dish to make with easy ingredients making it hard to fuck up.
2) Its probably done too to appear different to Chinese restaurants since they are well established in areas but also you can use that customer base too. Who does not love English Chinese food, its great.
3) Its very quick to make meaning you can prepare large batches and it freezes well.

For some reason too and I think its due to the following reasons but Asian student body, The more successful universities in Britain all have Japanese cafeterias and most of them honestly are pretty banging. It's definitely a Russel University group thing. Honestly I am a slut for some Katsu but Japanese food in general due to its flavour profiles but I honestly love a good vindaloo as well. It's why British food is unique because you can view it through time periods and it reflects on the empire etc. I am one of those who classes a Balti as a British dish because it is, we were actually multi cultural because Indians and Jamaicans etc used to actually mesh as well as Polish and Hungarian. Sadly that sense of reciprocity is gone now because it is forced down communities throats.

The money will be given to UK-based Medical Aid for Palestinians, after the donation received almost unanimous support from councillors on the city administration committee on Thursday.

It follows a motion, presented by Bailie Leòdhas Massie and passed by the council in March, which called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

Bailie Thomas Kerr, Conservative, recorded his dissent with the decision, saying he couldn’t justify the use of taxpayers’ money while the council is planning to remove up to 450 teaching posts in the city.

The donation was agreed in “recognition of the considerable additional strain placed on the resources of UK-based charities by the conflict in Gaza”.

Medical Aid for Palestinians is currently running an emergency appeal to support the provision of medical supplies, emergency food and humanitarian aid.

Following the decision, Bailie Massie said it was “a very welcome signal of solidarity that Greens requested for Medical Aid for Palestinians”.

He added: “It is vital that our words of solidarity with Palestinians are followed by direct, practical support. Greens are proud that this donation will show Glasgow playing our small part in giving support to those providing vital medical care with much needed resources to those suffering in Gaza.”

It matches a donation of £20,000 in March 2022 to UK-based charities supporting people affected by the crisis in Ukraine.

This is after recent strikes from binmen due to wanting lowest band council workers' pay to match cost of living increase.

"I know you lads are suffering, what with your pitiable salary not coming up even to normal and the cost of living going up, but look at it this way. Giving a bunch of your tax money to terrorists who hate you and are stabbing you in the streets will definitely make the world a better place. Got it? Now get to hauling off the rubbish!"

Sounds similar to the cut the winter fuel bill on one hand but donate 3 billion to Ukraine with the other plus we'll take their migrants. I think part of the speedrun too is because Parliament is not in session but the second there is visible opposition its over. The level of discontent is palpable, we need a higher power to give Starmer a whipping like Trump to actually humiliate him.

I posted this in the Summer of Discontent thread as part of the general fuel for the fire that is going to lead to more protests, but on reflection may be better here as a general State of the Country post. This was Friday night / Sat morning Birmingham.

The sheer inhumanity of this is shocking. These people are not part of society as I recognize it. And communities are not allowed to fight back.

Were I a binman in Glasgow, my bin lorry would be getting emptied out in the front gardens of the council and the council chambers for the foreseeable future. I’d pop a nice little Palestinian flag on top of the pile just to make my point

Isn't it Notting Hill Carnival today? I can't wait to celebrate the diversity of our capital by hearing about all the traditional stabbings, rapes and robberies that happen every time it rolls around, while the bobbies stand there dancing cheerily to the music, steadfastly refusing to get involved because that would be racist.

I dunno, man, maybe this is just me, but I feel like it's somehow going to hit slightly different this year.
