A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

You mean the rail system with security so bad the women need their own compartment to avoid being groped? Seems an odd choice for 'excellent'.
My man, you're disparaging a company for coming up with a solution to a problem not of their own making that doesn't involve raising costs for everyone else. Over here, they'd probably shove cameras everywhere, raise the prices for that, and not arrest or prosecute anyone of brown or darker skin color.

Edit: kind of feeling like everything is getting side-tracked from this discussion. Should we stop?

How does having to run, maintain and fuel extra carriages not cost money?

How does having to run, maintain and fuel extra carriages not cost money?
Much like the UK "quiet" coaches the few services that run that shit over there haven't added anything extra other than some signs to a pre-existing coach. I use the trains there pretty much daily when I'm over there for work and it's complete night and day compared to what we have here. I only ever saw the female only coach on one line in Tokyo too so I've almost always felt like it was just a publicity stunt anyways.

In lighter news.

The manager of a restaurant that has been crashed into for a third time says there is a real risk someone will be seriously hurt or killed.
San Tse said it felt like a bomb had gone off when a vehicle ploughed into the Royal Phoenix Chinese restaurant in Oswaldtwistle at 02:30 BST on Tuesday.
She added that she had repeatedly asked the council to install a speed camera outside the restaurant in the hope it would encourage drivers to slow down.
Lancashire County Council said it would install temporary signage and look to add a speed indicator device in the area.

The business has been forced to close following the crash
Speaking of the moment the car collided with the restaurant, Ms Tse said: "It was such a massive collision, I rushed over from my home when it happened. It really did shake the building as if there was an earthquake or a bomb.
Ms Tse, who manages the restaurant, said it was not the first time a vehicle had ended up in the premises. She said a driver crashed through the front of the building in 2011 and a car also hit the restaurant's front door in 2019.
The 44-year-old said there had also been a handful of near misses at the restaurant, which is situated opposite a mini roundabout junction.
"Sometimes I sit at the bar and watch the traffic speed past and I think, how many more of these near misses before someone gets hurt?" she said.
"The first time it happened [in 2011] it was during opening hours, so it's only luck that there wasn't a staff member standing there.
"It's an absolute blessing that none of our staff or customers have been hurt."

A car crashed into the restaurant's front door in 2019
She said she had repeatedly asked the council to install a speed camera outside the restaurant but her requests had been ignored.
"People don't drive at the speed limit because there's a mini roundabout.
"How many more of these near accidents will there be before the council take it seriously?"
Lancashire County Council said: "There have been three collisions on this road in the last five years, with a high speed of 24.1mph recorded on Moscow Mill Street which is a 20mph limit street," the spokesman said.
"We have previously deployed temporary road safety signage to this location and will look to deploy temporary signs again.
"We will also book this location on our speed indicator device schedule to positively influence driver behavioural change."
Ms Tse said the business had been forced to close following the incident and although they had been inundated with support and offers to help clean up from the community, they were worried about lost earnings.

San said she had to arrange for the building to boarded up herself
"The restaurant has been in the heart of the community since 1990," she said.
"The love we have received from the community has been incredible. Everyone has been so supportive.
"We are concerned about loss of income though. We have slowly been crawling out of the debt we accrued during Covid."
She said, on top of lost earnings, the business had to pay a private company to clear the debris from the path outside the restaurant and arrange for the building to be boarded up.
"We are such a small company, sometimes we feel invisible when we need help," she said.
"No one from the council has come to help, we've had no phone calls."
Lancashire County Council said obstructions could be reported via the council website.
Lancashire Constabulary said the most recent incident was a "damage only collision".

A British LGBT activist and anti-hate campaigner has been charged with 37 different offenses related to the sexual abuse of children. Stephen Ireland, 40, was arrested on August 14 along with one of the volunteers from his organization, David Sutton, 26, in Surrey, UK.

According to a press release by Surrey Police, Ireland and Sutton, both of whom worked at a local pride organization Pride in Surrey, have jointly been charged with 15 offenses, including:

  • Six counts of conspiracy to sexually assault a child;
  • One count of conspiracy to kidnap a child;
  • Four counts of arranging the commission of a child sex offence;
  • One count of conspiracy to administer a substance with intent;
  • One count of publishing an obscene article;
  • One count of voyeurism;
  • One count of perverting the course of justice.

But both Ireland and Sutton are facing additional charges individually on top of the 15 they have both been slapped with.

Ireland has been further charged with an additional 22 offenses of a serious nature, including the rape of a child, while Sutton has been accused of an additional 7.

In all cases, the victim or victims were under the age of 13, and the crimes are said to have occurred over a two year span from August of 2022 to just last month.

While Ireland and Sutton have been remanded to custody awaiting a hearing, Surrey Police is calling for anyone with more information on the crimes to come forward as the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who may have information beneficial to the case is asked to contact Surrey Police quoting reference number PR/45240080974 via their online reporting toolor by calling 101. If an individual with information wishes not to speak directly with police, the option is available to contact independent charity Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

Ironically, both Ireland and his organization have a long history of collaborating with Surrey Police at various events and in “anti-hate” campaigns.

In 2019, Ireland boasted of spending the day with Surrey Police in their “Pride” patrol car – a police vehicle decorated with rainbow decals. In a newly-resurfaced video, Ireland praised Surrey Police as “absolutely fantastic,” and advertised the Stop Hate campaign he was promoting.

Stop Hate is a UK charity based in Leeds and dedicated to “raising awareness and understanding of discrimination and hate crime, encouraging its reporting, and supporting the individuals and communities it affects.” Ireland appears to have been closely connected to the campaign, as he regularly referenced it on social media.

According to independent news outlet Reduxx, Ireland was also invited to speak at an LGBT History Month Seminar hosted by Surrey Police in 2021. As recently as 2024, Ireland’s organization, Pride in Surrey, also shortlisted Surrey Police for a Community Champion Award.

Ireland was also vocally opposed to “transphobia,” and frequently called out beloved children’s author JK Rowling for her stance on women’s sex-based rights.

In 2020, Ireland called for women critical of gender ideology to be banned from using what was then known as Twitter.

“Honestly shocked at some of the disgusting transphobic tweets I have read this evening,” Ireland wrote. “So upsetting that @Twitter continues to allow them! I am proud to be a Trans ally and will always stand with my trans siblings in solidarity against this vile anti-trans rhetoric.”

Irish Army Chaplain stabbed outside/at the front gate of a barracks.
An army chaplain has been stabbed several times during an attack at Renmore Barracks in County Galway.
Fr Paul Murphy, who is in his 50s, was taken to University Hospital Galway and his injuries are described as serious but not life-threatening.
In a Facebook post, the chaplain with the Irish Defence Forces thanked the public for their prayers and said he was awaiting surgery.
Gardaí (Irish police) said a teenage boy was restrained by soldiers and then arrested. They also said a terror motivation was one line of enquiry.
The special detective unit is involved in the investigation.
"At this time it is not believed this incident is part of a wider conspiracy," police added.

Paul
Fr Murphy was approached by the youth outside the barracks and attacked.
The chaplain then entered through the barracks gate and followed by the youth.
The injured priest was given first aid by on-duty personnel.
Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported the priest had undergone surgery for his injuries.

Warning shots fired

The Defence Forces said warning shots were fired by personnel during the incident.
"Soldiers on duty responded to the immediate threat with appropriate force to ensure the safety of personnel and secure the area," they said.
"The assailant was quickly detained and handed over to An Garda Síochána.
"The injured Defence Forces member was provided with immediate first aid at the scene before being transported to hospital for further treatment."
Members of the Garda's armed support unit were also sent to the incident on Thursday night.

Gardaí said a possible terror motivation was one line of enquiry

'Intervened bravely'

Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Simon Harris has described the incident as "shocking".
"My thoughts are with the member of the Defence Forces in hospital. I want to thank the Defence Forces and gardaí for their action and response," he said.
Tánaiste (Irish deputy prime minister) and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin condemned the attack.
"I commend the members of the Defence Forces on duty at the time, whose intervention was critical.
"Our thoughts are with the Defence Forces member injured in the attack."
Justice Minister Helen McEntee said her "first thoughts are with Fr Paul Murphy" and she wished him a speedy recovery.
"I would also like to pay tribute to the members of the Defence Forces who intervened bravely at the scene," she added.
Bishop of Galway the Right Reverend Michael Duignan said news of the assault was "deeply shocking and upsetting".
He said he would pray for the injured man's full recovery as well as for his family, army colleagues and medical personnel.

Gardaí (Irish police) said a teenage boy was restrained by soldiers and then arrested. They also said a terror motivation was one line of enquiry.

Somehow they know he's a teenage boy but not his age or any other details about him. (Pretty sure they probably know exactly who he is.) So he's probably actually a 20 something Muslim.

Trade unions stopped representing the workers 40 years ago and anyone who is in one now is work shy neighbour cattle and deserved to be culturally enriched and replaced.
Can confirm, the main union member we had at one of my old workplaces half-assed his work constantly, was constantly calling in sick for any reason possible, and unironically wore Che Guevara shirts in public despite being in his 50s.

Imagine my shock
I was, in Ireland I'd assume it was the Troubles being the motivation.
Also love how far they'll go to lie about the reasons.
A 16-year-old Galway teenager who stabbed an Army chaplain on Thursday night had been laying in wait to launch an attack on Defence Forces personnel due to grievances over Ireland’s overseas military activities, gardaí believe.
The incident, which left Fr Paul F Murphy (52) with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, is being treated as a possible terrorist attack by gardaí from the Special Detective Unit, the State’s primary counter-terrorism agency.
Gardaí have been granted additional time to hold the teenager and have conducted several interviews with him since his arrest on Thursday night. He is being accompanied by his mother during the interviews and has been of “limited assistance” so far, sources said.
Gardaí have searched his home and have examined his electronic devices. They believe he had become “radicalised to an extent” by conspiracy theories regarding Irish involvement in Mali and the Middle East.

During the attack, the teenager was heard shouting about the Irish Defence Forces’ involvement in Mali, although his exact grievance was unclear.

Until recently, the Defence Forces took part in two operations in the sub-Saharan nation, under European Union and United Nations banners, in response to the threat from Islamic militants. Irish involvement in the EU operation, a military training mission aimed at building up the Malian army, ceased last year amid concerns Malian troops were taking part in attacks on civilians.
Fr Murphy, a popular cleric originally from Waterford, has been assigned to the western brigade for about 10 years and has served several tours overseas.
He was described as a “very much a hands-on padre” in terms of working with the troops in every aspect of their lives. As well as serving Defence Forces personnel, he takes part in multiple local community initiatives.
Gardaí believe the teenager had been waiting in a laneway beside the entrance to the barracks for an opportunity to carry out an attack.
Fr Murphy’s car did not have Army markings and he was wearing civilian clothes. It is understood Fr Murphy had rolled down his window in preparation to talk to the sentry when the teenager approached his vehicle.
The attacker then started to stab the victim with a previously hidden knife.
The car drove through the gate as the teenager continued the attack. Witnessing the attack, the sentry on duty aimed his Steyr rifle and fired five warning shots in the air as per standard Defence Forces use-of-force protocols.
They then tackled the attacker and used their baton to subdue him before holding him until gardaí, including officers from the Armed Support Unit, arrived.
Other personnel administered first aid to Fr Murphy as they waited for paramedics. He suffered five stab wounds but maintained consciousness.
He underwent surgery on Friday afternoon which went well, sources said.
“Friends, thank you for your prayers, love, and concern. Sorry that I can’t reply to all messages and take all the calls coming my way,” he wrote on Friday morning. “All will be well.”
President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Simon Harris and Tánaiste Micheál Martin have paid tributes to Fr Murphy and Defence Forces personnel. Chief of Staff Lieut Gen Seán Clancy said “there is no doubt that their actions were critical in preventing further harm or loss of life.”

So, no idea why, my brain decided to run the cost of housing the illegals in hotels for a year.

And now I am deppressed.

We could actually spend that 3 billion fixing shit. But no.
Your numbers are out of date. Reeves has said there is an overspend of £6.4billion on the asylum budget:

If that's the overspend, what is the total spend? Must be over £10billion. Truely insane numbers.
