A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I applaud her determination to get back into the UK legally. I almost want to let her back in as a poster child for "see, do it legally and it's all good".

She's lost a lot of weight, unsurprisingly with where she's living/being held captive, which has changed her appearance and could have easily snuck back in under a different name, which is what I would have done.

I'm surprised she doesn't want to try her chances over in Bangladesh, now that the Muslims are apparently having a big jolly party over there. You'd think she'd love all that.

It's really more a factor of the attention you garner than the actual crime. You could say the most heinous things in your local pub and probably nothing would come of it. You can make a mild statement online and if it gets enough attention you can be done for it. Lauren Southern was banned from the UK under the Terrorism Act. Is she a terrorist? No. Have people said far, far worse things than she has? Absolutely. But she was popular and listened to (and a bit of alright).

Suspended Labour councillor arrested over video ‘urging people to cut throats’​

A suspended Labour councillor has been arrested on suspicion of encouraging murder after a video emerged in which he appeared to call for far-right protesters’ throats to be cut.

Ricky Jones, who was a councillor in Dartford, Kent, was filmed making the call at a counter-demonstration in Walthamstow on Wednesday evening. He has also been arrested for an offence under the Public Order Act following the incident on Wednesday evening, the Metropolitan police said.


In a statement on X, in which a link to the original video was given, the force said: “Officers have arrested a man aged in his 50s at an address in south-east London.

“He was held on suspicion of encouraging murder and for an offence under the Public Order Act. He is in custody at a south London police station.”

Jones was among thousands of protesters in east London who took to the streets campaigning against racism and violence.

A few protesters held placards that read: “Smash fascism and racism by any means necessary.”

In a video apparently filmed on Hoe Street in Walthamstow, Jones said: “They are disgusting Nazi fascists and we need to cut all their throats and get rid of them all.”

Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, posted the footage to his X account and asked: “Why has #TwoTierKeir not taken action?”

A Labour spokesperson said: “This behaviour is completely unacceptable and it will not be tolerated. The councillor has been suspended from the party.” Jones will no longer be able to sit on the Labour benches during Dartford borough council meetings.

His suspension came as the newly elected Labour MP for Rochester and Strood, Lauren Edwards, said she “deeply regrets” posting a series of “racist” tweets between 2009 and 2011.

In one post, Edwards wrote: “I want these fucking Estonian retards out of my flat now!” Another post, which appeared to be responding to an account called Baroness Wrenthorpe, said: “Baroness Wrenthorpe text me from Walthamstow to say he’s seen a halal Pakistani Chinese Grill place. Hope he’s not suggesting we go there.”

The tweets were posted between 2009 and 2011, and Edwards has said she made a “significant error of judgment”. In a statement, Edwards said: “I have recently been made aware of a small number of tweets that I posted on Twitter from over a decade ago, which I now deeply regret.

“They were a significant error of judgment on my part, and I apologise wholeheartedly. Since becoming a local councillor and more recently an MP, I have seen first-hand the importance of bringing communities together and working with tolerance and respect for all in our society.”

Mish Rahman, a member of Labour’s national executive committee, said on X: “We missed these tweets on due diligence – I recall ‘retard’ as a key search word. I propose an away day at the ‘halal Pakistani Chinese Grill place’ to investigate what the craic is as on face value it seems a bit racist.”

Labour has been approached for comment on Edwards’ tweets.

Wouldn't be so depressing if those same idiots didn't think they were heroes who'd always stand against le evil nazis/fascists/insert evil flavour of the week when they're the exact same type who would have gladly enabled the horrors of the past like witch burning or snitching to the gestapo.

Something tells me once her appeals are exhausted and she isn't a citizen the Kurds will give her a very, very short and final trip out of that camp.

Rumours are if you say he's not Welsh you get done. Even though KF has found multiple trips and years living in his real homeland.

Have any MPs tried to stand up to labour? We know they're all in bed together but surely someone has publicly said Starmer is a petty twat and he's breaking the law left right and center while making things worse.

I'm still hoping 4chan trolls selective take footage from these fake protests and start reporting them to the police. Also reporting every single muslim with a knife. It would be funny to see the police sharing this around and saying he was one of the leaders in a protest in Plymouth. Would the police even notice if someone added chanting from another video over the top of these?

He looks like an over teacher of some kind. If he's dug into I wouldn't be shocked if he has a bunch of skeletons in his closet. Either he's got something he had to adamantly cover for or he's an actor and this is his angry englishman role (remember Reform MPs?)
 
Honestly? With inbreeding being something of a dirty secret in the upper echelons of the British populace, I think most nice posh, upper middle class families have got some pudgy older failsons amongst their ranks who, in any other walk of life, would be recognised as being riddled with the 'tism. Very well spoken men in their fifties, very polite, very academic, usually very knowledgeable about their special interests (which tend to be things like military history) in the way that autists often are, but absolutely clueless with regard to basic social graces or when people are either just humouring them or bored beyond tears by them, but too polite to say otherwise. They tend to have names like 'Jonty'.

I used to know a chap just like that, who was very pleasant and amiable, but clearly some kind of 'spergic. This dude reminds me of him, more than anyone.

At the most technical level saying he wasn't Welsh is false communication as according to the law and state he is indeed Welsh. To the state if you were born in Wales you are Welsh even if you left the country a week after your birth and never returned.
