A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Shamima Begum loses final UK court bid over citizenship

Shamima Begum will not be allowed to challenge the removal of her British citizenship at the Supreme Court, judges have ruled.
The 24-year-old hoped to overturn the government's decision to revoke her citizenship on national security grounds after she travelled to Syria as a teenager to join the Islamic State group.
Justices at the UK's highest court said Ms Begum could not appeal against an earlier Court of Appeal ruling as the grounds of her case "do not raise an arguable point of law".
It was Ms Begum's last chance to challenge the revocation of her citizenship within the UK legal system. But her lawyers told the BBC they would take the case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

Without wishing to rain on your parade Judegdubey, it will be interesting to see what the ECHR do with this. My understanding is that the Americans have already stuck their noses in regarding repatriation. I didn't think the ECHR could be any less popular in my eyes, but it's just possible it might happen here. I would love to see us leave the ECHR, but it will never happen during the current government's terrifying reign of power, one only has to look at Two Tier's CV to see that.
The really pessimistic side of me thinks what is one more ? We already have millions of traitors living in this country, actively subverting the meaning of what it once meant to be British, what difference does one more make ? Some ECHR judgments are advisory and only require the government to acknowledge and state reasons for their decisions. See Hirst v United Kingdom (No 2) a case around prisoners being given the vote.
The UK usually obeys international law and judgements but has occasionally ignored them.

The Begum case is sufficiently toxic that the Labour government is unlikely to intervene, despite it being stuffed with human right zealots , but given the size of their majority you can never tell.

Something has definitely turned. In the comments on a BBC article about house prices (what is this, the daily mail?) there's a lot of discussion about why prices are so high. Normally the consensus would be "le rich tories boomers give me a free house!" and whatnot, but there's a lot of posts like this:











They're getting a lot of positive reception. Usually, posts like this on BBC's comments section are downvoted to hell and jannied out of existence. They might still be swept up, but they must be sweating mightily at the number of people who are openly contradicting the immigration narrative on the BBC's own website.

Waking up today was enlightening. It seems many people were right and ‘British people are bad at riots’. It didn’t happen because we had far too many counter-protest peaceful protesters.

Not sure what to buy, really. All the papers today say things like “Britain stands together to quash ‘far right” protests.”
