A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The little lad who got stabbed in Hainault turns out to be an actual nice kid, scholarship pupil at local private school, Nigerian, mum's a local teacher, no one a bad word to say about him. Was on way to school with headphones in when chopchop man did for him. Bloody shame.

Chopchop man is a Spanish Brazilian. Cops have finally charged him. This is starting to look like a legitimate psychotic break.

In other news, this is local elections day in England, Rishi has presumably spent the night lubricating and dilating his anus

A Spanish Brazilian murders a Nigerian teenager in the East End of London, that says it all really doesn't it?

I would go for a gas-powered air-rifle and buy upgrade springs to take it beyond the legal limit. One of those puppies with a rotating magazine would punch enough holes through someone to stop them in their tracks.
[ackshually mode] You still have to re-cock after every shot with a springer, even if it has a magazine; a bit of an effort, and time-consuming, with a break-barrel or underlever, and you have to take the rifle out of your shoulder to do it. PCPs, Pre-Charged Pneumatics, (which more closely fit the description of 'gas-powered') generally have nice 'straight-pull' style actions (and those rotary magazines), which allow you to stay on target between pews, and deliver follow-up pews faster. They're still limited (unless you have a loicense), of course, and I don't know how, or even if, you can tinker with those at home (genuinely haven't looked into it). Regarding spring-powered airguns, you mustn't google tuning kits, and definitely don't search for TbT (Tinbum Tuning) specifically or anything. Also, don't look up "dieseling" on Youtube. I totally didn't do anything like that as a teenage bumpkin, and neither should you. Can't go wrong with Weihrauch, btw, or Air Arms, if you have deep pockets, and want to buy British. Always liked their underlevers, myself - brilliant accuracy. And for a SHTF situation, get a springer.

Edit: buy that shit NOW, and find pellets your rifle likes, and stockpile. Because inflation, obvs, plus there's talk of a ban on lead ammunition. Expect further restrictions on weapons, of all kinds.

There goes my balkans/liverpool assumption.

There are so many jokes that could be made here, I don't know which one to shit out first.

I dunno, the entire administration is such a circus I'm increasingly in favour of Penny Mordaunt getting her month-long internship as PM. The Cabinet should all take a turn. It will be like X Factor but for a political leader.

Nah jk jk give us a fucking election, this shit is beyond painful to watch

So the government have allocated another ~£200k for the police to go on holiday to the Algarve the Madeline McCann investigation.
Why is it a matter for the metropolitan police force? To the extent that any police force in the UK should still be "investigating" this, I thought the McCanns were scouser? Shouldn't their local plod be getting the money?

Madeleine McCann would turn 21 this month, if she was still living.

If Madeleine was still alive, which she isn't, she has been missing almost her whole life. The trail is colder than a nun's heart. It is a colossal misuse of police resources to still be looking for her.

But having committed to the McCann's version of events, there seems to be an institutional resistance to accepting the obvious by the police and the Department of Justice, and just to quietly not engage in this crap any more.

You'd think, if they had to send anyone, it would be the NCA. The reality of it is, the Met are "The Police" as far as Westminster is concerned, so whenever any major or highly publicised incident occurs, it's always the Met that politicians turn to for advice and information. It's also who they turn to when they want a high profile response to any of their pet projects.

The Met, meanwhile, has figured out that it's a great way to send a few favoured sons on an all expenses paid booze-up for a couple of weeks.

The McCann thing is grim. I have to say that as a parent you would never ever give up trying to find what happened so I get that (and I would also never ever leave my kids alone in an apartment while I went for dinner either.)
I do wonder if they think there’s a link to a wider ring of child kidnapping and horror, and that’s why this case is allowed to go on so long.

Thanks for the information on what I shouldn't do, and definitely won't, with the murder-bangsticks. I've been to the odd shop last year and liked the look of some of the rifles with the aim (no pun intended) of going to a few ranges and getting my aim back. I've handled large weapons in my time, nudge nudge, wink wink, but i'm a little out of practice.

Madeline McCann was murdered by her parents, either intentionally because she wouldn't stfu when they wanted a knees up, accidentally through an OD because Dr McCann overprescribed her because she wouldn't stfu when they wanted a knees up, or through negligence because she whammed her head when they were out on a knees up.
I can't see it having anything to do with a pedo ring, because if it was, this case would be colder than a polar bear's ballsack.

I fully believe Madeleine's parents never intended any harm to her. By all accounts, she was a much wanted and much loved child.

I also don't know if you can convey to anyone who hasn't been left 24/7 with three grouchy, tired kids quite how fucking head busting a racket they can make. For hours.

If you have them in your sole care most or all of the time, you develop a bit of a resistance to it. You also know they don't melt your head all of the time and this will pass. You know when there's no point fucking around with current year parenting techniques around de-escalation and other bullshit. There is a point when you have to take the sproglets home for some food and a nap.

This does mean your holiday cannot be scheduled for activities from 7am till 12 midnight. It is hot. Your kids are hot and tired and in a strange place and they are basically large babies.

You have to know when you are beaten, and you have to try and let it roll off you. When they are done, they are done. They can be done by 11am and that's just how it is.

But.

The McCann parents had the McCann kids in full time childcare, and Kate's mother was almost always with her when she had the children. Kate was completely unused to having all three of them 24/7 herself for a week.

The Kiwis with kids will recognise when your little one just has had too much, and they refuse everything you offer, and they are just fucking inconsolable. It's grim. (this is 'cold drink, sandwich, and a nap' time.)

We know from eyewitness accounts Madeleine was last seen alive having a massive tanty and being hauled along by the arm by Gerry. And Kate can't account for all the valium that was in her doctor's bag for house calls.

It would be stupid in the extreme to give your three year old half a vally to calm her the fuck down and knock her out for a few hours' much needed rest. It would be so stupid that if anyone found out about it, you would lose your licences to practise and be charged with endangering the kid.

If, heavily sedated and in a strange place, the poor little bugger slipped, fell and gave herself a fatal head injury? All the above plus manslaughter charges and losing custody of the twins, permanently.

People who panic do stupid things, like trying to stage a disappearance of a dead baby with a 'missing' suitcase and a rental car they can't account for the movements of. Because any autopsy will bring up the fact she was vallied out of her little eyes. You'd need an alibi, even a genuinely unbelievable one that you left your three toddlers alone and unsupervised in a hotel room for hours rather than use the resort's babysitting service.

You can tell a lie that you can never get out of.

I've visited that area of Portugal. There are worse places for your mortal remains to lie than in the pretty blue sea there, with the birds and the sunshine. But anyone seriously looking for Madeleine McCann should have looked there from the start.

The reason I think someone took her is this;
If you’d literally got away with murder, you’d let it lie after a while. You’d do an appropriate grieving/searching process and then after some protest, when people at the police start telling you they need to wind down, you say well ok. Then you’d go quiet and fervently hope that nobody brings it up again. The more the spotlight is on you the more chance you have of slipping up.
The fact that they havent done this is what tells me someone took her.
I think they were out of order to leave the kids like that. I know people do it, I’ve been on a holiday where I was pressured to do it. My response was ‘bring all the kids here, bed them down on the floor/beds/couches, leave me snacks for them. You all go out, I’ll stay and keep an eye on them but I won’t leave them alone.’ People for all array about it, my response was ‘madeleine McCann’ but they all went out and I had a very tiring evening with three families worth of kids.
They should never have left her alone. Maybe she and the twins were given something to quiet her down, and maybe that’s why nobody woke up, but I do think someone took her.

That's genuinely very interesting: you're the only normal person I've ever met who does actually think she was taken. (I accept I probably know a lot of suspicious people). I see the point absolutely about lying low, and that's logically what they should have done. But they were given literal millions from the public, and also Gerry was very into the attention at least at first.
Am shocked people pressured you to leave kids unattended. Even leaving out the madeleine thing, didn't we all get it drilled through our heads that unattended kids have accidents? You did the Lord's work keeping them with you, though. I could not go and leave kids unattended and go out. I can't even pretend I could do it.

Going to bring up a counterpoint (I don't say this is the case here, but it happens often enough)

You've killed someone - not some stranger, but your own child - and the cops seem to accept the kidnapped idea. So you're free and clear, just keep your mouth shut and you're good, barring accidents.
Guilt is a fucking strange and powerful thing. You know you did it, one of the most monstrous things a person can do. It's gonna keep nagging you in one of two ways:

You either develop the need to make absolutely 100% certain that no one suspects, which leads you to constantly poking the fucking bear, OR
You want to get caught. Not got the bottle to actually confess, but you want the nightmare to be over so you keep prodding the investigation.

Could be either. Could be neither. Personally I think she was taken, not from any particular evidence but because I sleep better of a night thinking that.

Babies as well. You’d be shocked at what people think is ok and shocked at how many people think it’s fine to leave kids for hours while they go get drunk. Last time we ever went on a holiday with others let’s put it that way. People who I’ve spoken to about it seem to fall into either ‘everyone does it they just got unlucky’ or ‘WTF were they thinking’ and never the Twain shall meet
Yeah maybe it’s a guilt manifestation, I don’t know. The guy they are looking at now seems like a monster, whether he had anything to do with it or not is up for debate.
I could never rest if someone took one of mine, I’d look until I died. If I’d left them alone when it happened I’d die of guilt, you’d never be able to cope

That is what sane people would do. However, the McCanns were affluent people who rubbed shoulders with all the right people, George Brown included. Doctors and other professionals in such high places also have the nasty tendancy to be narcissists and we all know narcs can do no wrong. From day one the McCanns have taken absolutely no responsibility for their frankly ridiculous actions. You're telling me those people couldn't have afforded an on-site babysitter for a few hours if they needed some quiet time? The facility had free babysitting services from what I remember about the case at the time since it was a very memorable case at a memorable time for me and I followed it extensively for many months. The McCanns got a LOT of money for their negligence, negligence that, were they poor people who didn't have a pot to piss in would have instead had the full weight of the law come crashing down on them and their remaining kids taken, so no, I do and have always suspected foul play, especially when the whispers of there being a global pedo ring gets stronger by the year.

To me, Madeline McCann was a sacrifice they regretted somewhat, maybe just a little and the guilt is what keeps them looking for a body that they know will never be found. A lot of criminals who murdered their victims join in on the search, knowing what really happened while playing the act of good samaritan.
