A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Regardless of how the traitorous dogs at the top have handled Brexit, re-asserting our independence as a sovereign nation Stop laughing, it's a start. is a desirable first step on the route to Britain England and its children. Lets' not kid ourselves. becoming a real country once again. I know that's being rather :optimistic: , but there's no point in not trying.

Exactly, even if it isn't used yet, the power has been taken back. If we ever get a real leader, they will be able to properly rule. This was a victory for future generations who may one day see the fruit flower from this sapling.

Welcome to the populous middle.

An independent trade policy and "empire! empire!" are not the same thing. Within the EU, we were bound by the the union customs code, common trade policy positions, and other EU-level barriers that all but severed our previous, often highly lucrative trade relations with third countries. Multilateral and bilateral agreements with third countries were between those countries and the EU, often on terms that actively harmed our own trade and industry. Much of our industrial base was exported to the far east, at least in part, due to trade and regulatory barriers that prevented businesses here from participating freely in the global market on terms that benefitted our own national needs, which led to the loss of tens of thousands of jobs.

Those workers were betrayed by Labour and Tory alike, in favour of a supranational body that favours German industry and French agriculture over everything else, and acts at the behest of corporate behemoths, against the interests of the people it putatively serves. They did this because EU membership allowed them all the trappings of power, with none of the actual responsibility to govern. There's a reason why the national party organisations became obsessed with education and health as manifesto promises because they had fuck all they could do about vast swathes of regulatory and legislative responsibility, which had been progressively transferred to the EU. We didn't even full control immigration policy; that was entirely an EU prerogative, around which Parliament could only fiddle with the details.

May, Boris, and the rest of the crooks at the top pipped it, because they're either buffoons or hated the referendum result, but our long term prospects are better out than in. At least now, there's a possibility of making changes that actually benefit us. There's an element of time constraint to it, and there's a very real chance that we'll just end up with a series of increasingly deranged lunatics, who want to get back into the EU at any cost, while selling off chunks of the country to their friends in the meantime, but there's also a chance that we'll actually get people who are willing and able to govern this country and who might even decide that all these illiterate foreigners aren't actually welcome. At the very least, we have a choice. That wasn't available to us before.

I went to Vietnam back in the mid-2000s and couldn't believe that the KFC in Saigon did delivery. They're years ahead I thought. If only we could get this back in the uk.

In general I don't mind politicians talking about immigration a lot because it is undoubtedly one of the biggest electoral issues. I do however mind when they continue talking about immigration when they've been the party in power for the last decade plus and done precisely fuck all practical to fix it.

It's the main driver of population growth, and population growth is the root of a lot of our current problems - so yeah, it is important. Plus we have things like the anti-semitic marches through London: the percentage of Muslims in the country has doubled over the last 20 years.
And there's the fact that they were originally elected on a promise to get it below 100,000, and it's currently seven times that...

Hey everyone , yesterday just before the top of the hour I was joking around a bit with the team in the gallery. I was pretending to count down as the director was counting me down from 10-0.. including the fingers to show the number. So from 10 fingers held up to one. When we got to 1 I turned finger around as a joke and did not realise that this would be caught on camera. It was a private joke with the team and I’m so sorry it went out on air! It was not my intention for this to happen and I’m sorry if I offended or upset anyone. I wasn’t ‘ flipping the bird’ at viewers or even a person really. It was a silly joke that was meant for a small number of my mates.
