A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Results are in for the 3 by-elections caused by Tory MPs quitting

Uxbridge, which was Boris' seat, just about held by the Tories with a ~500 vote majority.

Somerton and Frome was won by the fucking Lib Dems of all people, and by a hefty margin as well. Labour ended up 5th, behind LD, Tories, Greens and Reform UK

Selby and Ainsty won by Labour who overturned a 20k Tory majority to a 4k majority for them.

Went probably slightly better than expected for the Tories in saving one seat, as they were expecting to get hammered. The real questions here are for Labour who were really really counting on making a big statement, especially in Uxbridge. Turns out that having the Labour Mayor of London ram through a wildly unpopular expansion of the ULEZ faggotry might bite them at the polls in that area, who knew lel.

At this point, aren't the Lib Dems the best of the bad bunch? The Greens are insane and Reform UK don't have a chance.

Labour are mental and Tories (with the wef in charge) are just as mental.

I thought we were heading for a lab/lib/greens coalition a few years back and now we could be in the same position again. Imagine a Lab/Lib/Green coalition? They'd be so pro-climate change that they would remove the word coal from their coalition title.

This just proves that people aren't voting for Labour, but against the Tories. The lib Dems are essentially a sanctioned protest vote a lot of the time; someone to vote for that you don't mind winning, because it's not the other party. It's a shot across the bow. If the Tories are smart, they'll keep pushing their immigration stance and start dropping the costly net zero bullshit. They could instantly slash energy prices by ending renewables levies.

The libdems sit half-way between the pro-immigration, pro-surveillance, authoritarian conservatives and the pro-immigration, pro-surveillance, authoritarian Labour party.

They're pant-shitting retards with no self-will. NPCs of the highest order: If they got an absolute majority they'd probably sell the country to Iceland by mistake.

Absolutely not. Pro-EU, pro-green, pro-troon.

The Liberal Democrats took on Aimee Challenor after the Greens parted way over the issues with the child raping father. That says anything about how good a judge of character they are.

Agree, the libs are fucking retards. But between Starmer and his "I won't increase public spending but I will cancel all future oil licenses" and the unelected, Tony-Blair-In-Brown-Face that is the wef-shill Sunak, the libs fit right.

I say fuck it and roll the dice with the libs. It'll be worth the lulz for the massive public backlash they get when they balls everything up.

No - they could do a lot of do a lot of damage in five years, not least in shifting the Overton window.

Headline after the 2029 general election: "No immediate plans to decriminalise misgendering, says new PM Penny Mordaunt (they/them)"

"Labour is being very hasty here. We need to take a measured approach to our current childlove strategy; Fully ensuring that we have the appropriate awareness and ensuring that therapists, couples' councillors and the NHS are properly equipped in this area.
Only *then* we can talk about establishing a sex work sector for children,"

The overton window will shift regardless. Tony Blair saw to that. Look how unconservative the modern day Tory is. I'm almost longing for Cameron's austerity era.

Labour are no longer the party for the working class because the old working class hold traditional, anti-woke views.

Lib Dems are a meme party who could pose a serious threat to both labour and Tories, if the lib Dems could pick an identity and stick with it. Ironic really.

Reform UK were tarred with the racist brush straight out of the gates, forgetting that they are nothing like the BNP of the early 2000s; a party that wasn't even racist.

Greens are a party for ideological retards whos target audience seems to be 40 year old wine mum's with an art degree. If they were true to the green parties of the 90s, minus the retarded views on nuclear, then they would have a half way decent argument on their hands.

All parties have retarded ideas and the march towards normalising peadophilia continues unabated. The inevitable time when shagging kids is allowed - and make no mistake, the media will be chomping at the bit to tell the nation why this must happen, is coming. If not to appease the Satanist, peaodphiles and degenerates, then they'll do it to appease the Muslims and hordes of third world foreigners.

The only party worth voting for, the one true to itself, that know their members and play to their strengths, is the party that gets my vote every election: the monster raving loony party.

I do think there is a slippery slope with troonery but I don't think the UK will ever really embrace 'MAP pride' or other nonce shit, the average man on the street is far too opposed to the idea of it while troon stuff just about manages to slip on by.

Bold of you to assume anyone cared about the truth when it made a useful cudgel against some actual opposition.

Rated optimistic because you could've said the same thing about immigration. It's all top-down, astroturfed, manufactured consent. It's far more likely the State will push that shit because 'the average man on the street' is opposed to it. The rulers of this country, excuse me, economic zone despise native Bongs, and want us eradicated and replaced - and to suffer as much as possible whilst they do it.

George Alagiah, one of the BBC's longest-serving and most respected journalists, has died at 67, nine years after being diagnosed with cancer.
A statement from his agent said he "died peacefully today, surrounded by his family and loved ones".
A fixture on British TV news for more than three decades, he presented the BBC News at Six for the past 20 years.
Before that, he was an award-winning foreign correspondent, reporting from countries ranging from Rwanda to Iraq.
He was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in 2014 and revealed in October 2022 that it had spread further.
Paying tribute, his agent said: "George was deeply loved by everybody who knew him, whether it was a friend, a colleague or a member of the public.
"He simply was a wonderful human being. My thoughts are with Fran, the boys and his wider family," she said.
Alagiah died earlier on Monday, but "fought until the bitter end", his agent added.
BBC director general Tim Davie said: "Across the BBC, we are all incredibly sad to hear the news about George. We are thinking of his family at this time.
"He was more than just an outstanding journalist, audiences could sense his kindness, empathy and wonderful humanity. He was loved by all and we will miss him enormously."
BBC World Affairs editor John Simpson tweeted: "A gentler, kinder, more insightful and braver friend and colleague it would be hard to find."
BBC chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet called him "a great broadcaster", a "kind colleague" and "a thoughtful journalist".
Clive Myrie, presenting the BBC News at One, said: "On a personal note, George touched all of us here in the newsroom, with his kindness and generosity, his warmth and good humour. We loved him here at BBC News, and I loved him as a mentor, colleague and friend."

How's that back pedaling going for you Labour?

Labour has ruled out introducing a self-ID system to allow people to change their legal sex without a medical diagnosis.
Leader Sir Keir Starmer has previously said his party would introduce such a system if it wins power.
But shadow women and equalities secretary Anneliese Dodds has now said medical diagnosis upholds "confidence in the system".
She added that the requirement also helps people access NHS support.
In a article for the Guardian, she wrote that Labour would streamline the current medical diagnosis rules, calling them "demeaning".
The new Labour position appears to be a compromise that has emerged from a party event in Nottingham over the weekend to discuss policy.
It opens up a split with Scottish Labour, which has previously voted to remove the medical diagnosis requirement and has since confirmed it "continues to support the de-medicalisation of the process in Scotland".

Under current rules, people who want to change legal sex need to provide a medical report showing a diagnosis of gender dysphoria.
This is defined by the NHS as a "sense of unease that a person may have because of a mismatch between their biological sex and their gender identity".
Applicants also have to provide evidence of living full time in their acquired gender for at least two years.
Some campaigners say the the requirement is excessively bureaucratic and invasive, and have long argued for a non-medical process - known as self-identification - instead.
The government ruled out adopting this approach in 2020 after a consultation, but has reduced the fees and moved the process online.

'Mistakes'

Labour pledged to introduce a self-identification system under previous leader Jeremy Corbyn and the policy was in the party's 2019 general election manifesto.
Sir Keir reaffirmed the 2019 manifesto commitment to "introduce self-declaration" in a June 2021 video for LGBT website Pink News.
However, Ms Dodds has now confirmed that the party would keep the need for a gender dysphoria diagnosis, calling it an "important part" of the process for obtaining a gender recognition certificate.
"Requiring a diagnosis upholds legitimacy of applications and confidence in the system," she wrote.
She said that it also helped refer trans people into the NHS for support services, citing low levels of awareness about how to access them.
She added that Labour wanted to avoid the "mistakes" made by the Scottish government, whose new law to ditch medical reports is subject to an ongoing legal wrangle with the UK government.
Scottish ministers' legislation - endorsed by Scottish Labour in the Scottish Parliament - showed a "cavalier approach", she added.
However, she added the current requirement to apply to an "anonymous" panel to obtain a certificate should be replaced, calling it "demeaning for trans people and meaningless in practice".
Instead, she said it "should be enough" for registrars to sign off the application, based on diagnosis from one doctor.

'Signalling a retreat'

The LGBT+ Labour group said the party's new position would be a "huge step forward" for trans people over the current government stance.
But it added the party was "signalling a retreat on their policy of de-medicalised self-ID for the trans community at the next general election".
Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle, a patron of the group, told the BBC it would push for further changes, including giving non-medical professionals such as social workers the power to "externally verify" someone's acquired gender.
Rosie Duffield, who had threatened to quit as a Labour MP over the party's previous stance, said she welcomed the retention of medical reports, calling it the "core thing" demanded by women's groups.
Ms Duffield, the MP for Canterbury, has opposed self-ID as a way for trans people to gain access to single sex spaces such as domestic violence refuges and prisons.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, she called for more clarity on the party's position ahead of the general election, expected next year, adding it still included a "bit of confusion and a bit of fence-sitting".
Women and Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch said Labour's new position is a "copy and paste" of the government's position.
Adding that some Labour MPs had previously attacked the Conservative position as prejudiced, she accused the party of "bare-faced hypocrisy".

Also @Otterly looks like Kier has seen your post on here about losing the Mumsnet vote.

A woman is “an adult female”, Sir Keir Starmer has said, as he confirms the Labour Party’s hardened stance on gender.
The Labour leader said he did not believe the policy of self-identification was “the right way forward”, and that he believed that “the principle of safe spaces is very important for women”.
The Labour leader had previously pledged to change the law to allow trans people to self-declare gender, reflecting the plans from SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon that were later blocked by Rishi Sunak.
However, the leader of the opposition said that the party had had a “chance to reflect” on what happened in Scotland during a meeting of the National Policy Forum in Nottingham last weekend, and added: “We don’t think that self identification is the right way forward.”
He told a BBC Radio 5 Live phone-in: “We want to modernise the process, get rid of some of the indignities in the process, keep it a medical process.”

Sir Keir has been trying to clarify his views on gender since 2021, when he struggled to say whether or not a woman could have a penis. This year, he said that 99.9pc of women “haven’t got a penis”.
He appeared to go further when telling Nicky Campbell on Wednesday: “Firstly, a woman is an adult female, so let’s clear that one up.”
Safe spaces for women
He also said that the weekend’s meeting allowed the party to be “clear” on their stance on safe spaces, as he told Campbell: “We’ve always said, and continue to say, and Sunday when we completed our policy forum allowed us to be clear, that there should be safe places, safe spaces for women.”
When asked whether women would be properly protected in safe spaces that include trans people, Sir Keir said: “I think the Scottish prisoner case probably answers that question.”
Sir Keir appeared to be making reference to the case of convicted double-rapist Isla Bryson, who changed gender while waiting to stand trial and was initially remanded to a women’s jail after the verdict before being moved to a male prison.
Labour Party chairman Anneliese Dodds wrote in The Guardian on Monday to insist that “sex and gender are different” and to outline the party’s new position following the policy forum, acknowledging that it would “not please everyone”.
A LGBT Labour pressure group responded in a statement to say it was “very concerning” that the party was “signalling a retreat on their policy of medicalised self-ID for the trans community at the next general election”, but Left-wing gender-critical activists welcomed the change.

There was a young man called starmer
Who took some advice from a farmer.,,
Etc.
He was all for self ID with no restrictions a bit ago. The man flip flops around towards whatever he thinks is most convenient at the time. I mean i loathe Corbyn as well, he’s a commie, but at least he’s got conviction. He can clearly see which way the wind is blowing on this one. Time for some back-pedalling. But the GRCs have been a disaster.
I know he’s got a few advisors who are more humble backgrounds (I have an ear in Westminster too, apparently (shock!) they had free school meals as if that’s some kind of social strata that’s an untouchable class… ) but there’s a big presence of the insane lefty progs too. Maybe he can find his balls and stand up to them, or maybe they’ll coup him and install someone more tranny friendly.
Which way will starmer fall off the fence? Find out next week, in the next instalment of Yes Minister..!

He appeared to go further when telling Nicky Campbell on Wednesday: “Firstly, a woman is an adult female, so let’s clear that one up.”
I love that he tried to breezily throw it out like this, as if we won't notice he's spent the last three years prevaricating on whether men can have cervixes and women can have a penis.

Literally the only reason he's doing this now is because he's whipped out his little abacus, looked at the focus group research and polls, and figured out that his idiotic stance was losing him more voters than it gained. Don't trust this spineless worm.
