A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'm so sick of hearing the SNP bang on about Scottish independence

I think about three quarters of their supporters are too, if recent polls are to be believed. They've no intention of pushing for independence, and haven't done since 2015. It's just the carrot they dangle to get voted into power like every other party does, and it works because their opposition is somehow even more laughably bad than they are. Between that and all the corruption, tranny shit, climate emergency bullshit, and just general incompetence on a daily basis - I've even heard the independence supporters I know from there half-jokingly say they should just abolish the Scottish parliament and be done with it.

I'm so sick of hearing the SNP bang on about Scottish independence and everyday I get closer to Hitchen's stance of just letting them go, then I remember the kind of retarded shit they'd do if independent and realise maybe the best course of action is keeping Scotland contained in the Union.

"Contained" is the right word. I'd be delighted if we could get rid of all the constant Scottish bullshit... but then we'd have to deal with a hostile, failed state on our northern border. Not an improvement.

One of the big ones that was pointed out for this is they'd functionally have open borders and then allow anyone getting in to saunter over to England.
Yousaf's "tee hee" response to criticism was to ask why they would want to leave Scotland where they were welcomed to go to England. Sort of like why illegal immigrants from half of Africa are making their way to England from France, that would never happen.
I'd call him a duplicitous cunt but it's not like he's fooling anyone.

We should pull a Texas and bus all the Albanians to Edinburgh, see how it pans out.

I can think of a better solution. Kill every kiltnigger.

If those 4 thousand people went on a bomby, stabby rampage, who would, or could, stop them?
Only a tiny percentage of Muslims are prone to terrorism. What I'm instead concerned about is how the children of Muslims are taught to 'otherise', fear and disassociate with non-believers. It's destroying the fraternity between residents is what keeps society/civilisation going. And before anyone mentions converting, Somalia is 100% Muslim but they are in violent chaos because of the narcissism of small differences.

The faith is inherently political, and judging by modern Malaysia, the more numerous they are, the more the legal system forces 7th century virtue on believers and unbelievers alike. Then again, it could counterbalance clownworld so I don't know.

Independence would allow them to freeride off the rump UKs collective spending. Defence, environment, embassies etc.
They could be even be like New Zealand, undermining Australian intelligence services by double dipping with China.

They don't have to go 9/11 to terrorise places. I get it, not all muslims are bad. But i've lived near and worked with enough of them to know that they have a scumbag mentality. Find a feamle muslim who isn't NPC'd out of beatings and she will tell you some real shit.

Their faith and outlook is not compatible with Britain so having thousands of them march around in broad daylight isn't something we should cheer on. Hindus and Sihks fit in fine, as do the jews, proddies, catholics, buddhas etc etc.

Only a tiny percentage of Muslims are prone to terrorism
This is still an order of magnitude more than anyone else.
Somalia is 100% Muslim but they are in violent chaos because of the narcissism of small differences
Don't be ridiculous. Somalia is in violent chaos because it's full of niggers.

A few years ago we had a female colleague in her twenties who simply disappeared for a few months. Came back ‘from holiday’ in Pakistan pregnant, with an older husband (cousin, immigrant) in tow. She often has bruises. Multiple kids now.
I’ve asked her if I can help, she just shrugs and says it is what it is and she hopes he will mellow given time. NPCd indeed. She just looks blank
She’s a nice girl. I just despair.

A new shop dedicated to black children’s books has opened in south London to create a “safe space” where young black people are “inspired to read” and can “see themselves as heroes and problem solvers”.
Kelly-Jade Nicholls, 36, from Thornton Heath, London, launched Melanin Magic after establishing Woke Babies, a monthly subscription service providing boxes containing books and activities tailored to black audiences, four years ago.
She opened the bookstore on July 24 in West Norwood after seeing “how huge

The entrepreneur described the shop as a “fun” place that allows “black children to be children”.
Ms Nicholls told the PA news agency: “I would describe Melanin Magic as a fun place for kids, it features amazing black-owned brands and amazing books featuring black protagonists.
“The opportunity came where there was a shop available in an area that I just felt was perfect like West Norwood.
“I still see that from time to time I walk into different bookshops to see if access to black children’s books is becoming more available, and it feels like it’s not.
“Black children – all children – deserve to see themselves as heroes and problem solvers, individuals who can make a positive impact.”

She warned that if black children do not see themselves represented in books, it will send a message that “their stories and experiences do not matter”.
Ms Nicholls added: “If you go into your local popular bookstore and the only black books you see tend to be history books, like learning about Rosa Parks.
“I just like to give access to more fun books for kids, and just allow black children to be children and read everyday books like everyone else.”
Since opening her store, Ms Nicholls said the response from parents has been “amazing”.

She said: “There has just been non-stop great support from parents saying how needed it is.
“It’s so amazing seeing kids’ faces light up when they walk in.
“Lots of different cultures have come to celebrate the bookstore and understand that it’s not just for black people but for everybody to have diverse books.”
After noticing the lack of black literature at a well-known bookstore in Brixton, the former self-published author decided to establish Melanin Magic.

“In Brixton, I would always walk into this popular chain bookstore, and every time I walked in there were never any black books.
“It used to be shocking because it’s located in Brixton.
“Last year, Dapo Adeola, an amazing illustrator, had the book of the year and his books were not in the store.
“So that kind of has always been in the back of my mind.”
Ms Nicholls founded Woke Babies after hearing how parents “struggled” to find black children’s books.

The company provides parents with a monthly box that includes a variety of books featuring a black protagonist, along with learning resources.
“I thought of the idea of Woke Babies to take the stress away from parents, so they don’t have to go to the end of the earth to find great books,” Ms Nicholls said.
“At the time when I started Woke Babies, books featuring black protagonists were less than 1% of the books being published.
“Woke Babies is something that is definitely needed.”
With her two businesses, Ms Nicholls hopes she has “inspired a lot more book lovers to create a safe space within their area”.
Best of luck to them but as soon as I saw the words "Woke Babies" this article was getting posted.

Apologies to double post but time for another round of "the homeless aren't the problem, stopping them from sleeping, shitting and getting drunk anywhere they want is the problem"
Napping in public, feeding the birds and climbing trees may sound like perfectly normal activities. In fact, most people have probably done all of these things. And yet, these are just some of the activities people have been fined for as part of an ever more punitive government clampdown on “antisocial behaviour”.

According to new research, these types of fines – issued under public spaces protection orders (PSPOs) legislation – increased to 13,433 in 2022, up from 10,412 in 2019. It’s not just the record number, but the absurd nature of the fines that has raised alarm. PSPOs can be issued if a council official believes activities carried out in a public place have had a “detrimental effect” on quality of life. This is a vague threshold that has given local councils a blank cheque to ban normal, or at most slightly annoying, behaviour in a specified area.

These wide-ranging measures have so far been used to criminalise everyone from rough sleepers to buskers and cyclists. Southend-on-Sea, for example, has banned people from “using bikes in a way that has a negative effect for others”.

As if these measures weren’t draconian enough, they now look set to get worse under the government’s new antisocial behaviour (ASB) action plan. The plan proposes increasing the upper limit of on-the-spot penalties from £150 to £500 for those who litter or graffiti and giving PSPOs powers to the police. This would effectively allow police to write their own laws and to organise public spaces how they see fit. It would make them not just law enforcers, but de facto legislators, unleashing a terrifying new phase of policing.

Though this may represent uncharted territory, the plan is unmistakably rooted in policies cooked up under New Labour. In the decade after 1997, the perceived scourge of antisocial behaviour was a staple of political discourse and regularly made headlines. Tony Blair’s government broadly defined antisocial behaviour as that which causes nuisance, harassment, annoyance, alarm or distress and introduced several measures to manage it. These included evictions from social housing and antisocial behaviour orders (asbos) – a core policy of New Labour’s crackdown on crime.

When Blair left No 10, antisocial behaviour faded from the political agenda (it was barely given more than a passing mention in the 2015 general election manifestos of the Conservatives, Labour or Liberal Democrats). In her role as home secretary, Theresa May resolved to scrap asbos, introducing the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to replace New Labour’s failed policy.

But what may have seemed like a rollback actually created enhanced powers to tackle perceived nuisance, such as PSPOs, while maintaining a similarly broad definition as to what conduct can be considered “antisocial behaviour”. In proposing to extend these powers even further, the Tories’ ASB action plan is best characterised as Blairism on steroids.

Not wanting to be outflanked, the current Labour party has announced its own plans to crack down further on antisocial behaviour by increasing neighbourhood policing and introducing “respect orders”. These orders would create a new criminal offence for repeat adult antisocial behaviour offenders. Keir Starmer has made clear time and again that he is far more committed to showing Labour is the party that is “tough on crime” than investing in the kind of public services that would meaningfully change people’s lives.

In attempting to “out-punitive” one another, Labour and the Conservatives are using law and order rhetoric as a convenient distraction from the actual problems people are facing. Instead of stamping out “greedflation” – which has seen corporations use the cost of living crisis to push up their profits – the government is seemingly more concerned with, for example, banning the use of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas.

Through its antisocial behaviour clampdown, the government is also encouraging the public to direct its ire towards some of the most marginalised people in society. Overwhelmingly, the people targeted by PSPOs are homeless, with research from civil liberties group the Manifesto Club showing that in 2022, 53 councils banned begging, while seven banned rough sleeping and sleeping in a vehicle.

It is interesting to note that while statutory guidance on PSPOs previously stated that they should not be used to criminalise homeless people, this stipulation has recently been removed. It has led to homeless people being continually displaced from communities, perpetuating the problem the government claims to want to address. In fact, 2022 research carried out in 10 towns in England and Wales showed that PSPOs “did not stop or deter the behaviours of people experiencing street homelessness”.

And now, the ASB action plan intends to go further by giving police and council officers more dispersal powers to move on homeless people, and to ban anyone from public spaces for up to 72 hours. Much like the Vagrancy Act – a 200-year-old law making rough sleeping or begging an offence, which the government has pledged to scrap – these measures are simply a way of criminalising poverty. The idea that beggars can be fined hundreds of pounds for begging, potentially trapping people in a cycle of homelessness and destitution, is emblematic of how senseless and cruel these measures really are.

This punitive approach is doomed to fail. If the government wanted to prevent rough sleeping, it wouldn’t hand landlords more powers to evict tenants for antisocial behaviour. If it wanted to address perceived ills such as “loitering”, it would give cash-strapped councils the money to invest in youth clubs, leisure centres, public libraries and homeless hostels, which have all been gutted as a result of austerity.

And crucially, if it wanted to prevent more unnecessary suffering during a cost of living crisis, it would scrap the callous antisocial behaviour laws which have only made people’s lives more miserable.
