A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Well at least according to member polling done earlier this week he was losing against everyone by a decent margin.

Didn't like Sunak to begin with but after the kerfuffle with his tax dodging wife and his constant dodging of it every time it was brought up I want nothing more than his downfall, though that probably isn't an unpopular opinion at this point.

Britain still has enough people who will refuse an immigrant prime minister at the very least but everything else about this is just a complete mess.

Reading up on Liz Truss, she seems like Thatcher writ-old, economic policy wise (I'm sure the old Norf would be delighted), though not much hints on her actual social leanings. Anyone got a lowdown on that?

And this is the guy who raised NI, promises to raise corporation tax from 19 to 25% (because that won't sent all the businesses running to EU states or have them cut back on spending like employee salaries to compensate). Says he won't give any tax breaks or reduce anything until inflation is under control. The guy sure as hell ain't part of the low tax conservative kind while dodging them himself.

Truss on the other hand wants to reverse the NI raise and cut corporation tax to make us more competitive. This while cutting back on spending to balance it. She also says she'll link the tax brackets to CPI meaning high inflation will at least give you a bit more money through less taxation.

As someone already taxed far too much I sure as hell don't want Rishi grabbing more of my money while chasing companies out of the country by ratcheting up their expenses.

Well from what little I've heard so far today the media is most definitely pushing Rishi for PM.
Can you really blame them when the competition includes the likes of A Liz you can't Truss, Kemi BadEnough, and Suella de Vil? Because up against them, RichList Sunak really does start looking like the best option.

Then again, of all the candidates, Sunak is probably the candidate who would pose the most credible threat to Kier Starmer in a general election, so it would perhaps be in the country's best interest in the long run if we get the Poundshop Thatcher wannabe instead (that is, if she doesn't drag the country off a cliff first).

Sunak is probably the more Thatcherite of the two in the sense that he's positioning himself as the one who will get inflation under control and prioritize fiscal responsibility. Truss's platform is perhaps more comparable to the voodoo economics of Ronald Reagan, since she's all about advocating tax cuts, but seems to assume that they'll somehow magically pay for themselves.

Bong politicians are easy to understand, they operate with how can we fuck over our enemies and our fellow Bongs at the same time mindset.

Neither of those was not deliberate. And both were hilarious watching.

Slightly pained laughter I felt.

I should resume my hunt for episodes of that show, they're irksomely lacking in the usual spots.
See if you can find the one with Brian Blessed hosting. There used to be a ten minute montage of his episode that literally reduced me to tears. But I think it's gone.

I still remember him bellowing out "Are you GAY?" to that Tory MP.

I wish to God that there was open polling of all the candidates or at least not just a final two, because Kemi could actually conceivably win it.

All I know with Liz Truss is that every third word out of her mouth is Russia and I'm firmly convinced that if she becomes PM we'll be in WWIII by next year. She has that militaristic streak that some women have, knowing it wont be her on the front lines.

High taxes or low taxes, we'll somehow muddle through. It's the globalism and the culture war that are my most pressing concerns - sad though that is. I wish the debate was "just" about economics rather than redefining "woman" and sending people to die for American neocons.

This one?
Poor quality but it's about 10 minutes and includes that line.

Tory leadership: Rishi Sunak would put UK on 'crisis footing' as PM

Rishi Sunak has said he would put the UK on a "crisis footing" on day one as PM, as he and Liz Truss continue their pitch to lead the Conservative Party.
In an interview with the Times, the former chancellor said the country faced a national emergency, including on the economy, the NHS and migration.
He will set out plans to tackle the NHS backlog when he gives a speech later.
Meanwhile, Ms Truss has announced plans for a "bonfire" of EU laws retained after Brexit.
She has promised to scrap or replace all such laws which she argues hinder growth by the end of 2023.
The pledges come as the two remaining contenders in the contest to be party leader and the next prime minister step up campaigning, with Conservative Party members due to start voting in the coming weeks.
The winner will be announced on 5 September.

Speaking to the Times, Mr Sunak said a "business-as-usual mentality isn't going to cut it" when it comes to dealing with challenges that are "staring us in the face".
"Having been inside government I think the system just isn't working as well as it should. And the challenges that I'm talking about, they're not abstract, they're not things that are coming long down the track," he said.
"From day one of being in office I'm going to put us on a crisis footing."
Later, Mr Sunak will promise to accelerate NHS targets to cut waiting lists and make it easier to get scans without going to hospital.
More than 6.6 million people - around one in nine - are waiting for hospital treatment in England.
Mr Sunak will announce plans to eliminate one-year waiting times by September 2024 and get overall numbers falling by next year.
The target is six months earlier than NHS England's current plan, announced in February.
He will also promise to offer more diagnostic services - such as MRI and CT scans - in repurposed empty High Street shops.

'Gun to their head'

Speaking in the Lincolnshire town of Grantham, the birthplace of former Tory PM Margaret Thatcher, Mr Sunak will pledge to make the NHS backlog his "number one public service priority".
He will argue that a growing number of people are using money they can't really afford to go private.
"If we do not immediately set in train a radically different approach the NHS will come under unsustainable pressure and break," he will add.
It is understood the new measures would be funded through projected government under-spending, or by improving NHS efficiency.
Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has outlined her own bold pitch to be leader, describing herself as an "insurgent" who wants change, in an interview the Daily Telegraph.
She said after two decades of low growth and now the economic shock from the Covid pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the UK was facing a "pivotal moment".
"Do we continue with business as usual?" she said.
"I want to do things differently and be bold so that we become a high-growth, high-productivity powerhouse."
Ms Truss, who was among the ministers who did not resign from Boris Johnson's government earlier this month, has announced a plan to review thousands of laws inherited from the EU after Brexit.
Although she campaigned to stay in the EU at the 2016 referendum - unlike Leave-voting Mr Sunak - she has since embraced Brexit and is now seeking to argue she is best placed to ensure it delivers economic benefits.
The foreign secretary has promised to scrap or replace by the end of 2023 EU laws deemed to hold back the economy, with her campaign saying she "believes that a red tape bonfire will encourage business investment and boost growth".
Last month. Brexit opportunities minister Jacob Rees-Mogg pledged to repeal EU-derived laws by June 2026. However, critics called the plan unrealistic, with government estimates suggesting there are 2,400 such pieces of legislation.
Ms Truss has specifically said she would scrap the EU's Solvency II regulation, which sets rules on how pension savings can be invested and is already subject to a government review.
Mr Sunak, who quit as part of the cabinet mutiny against Boris Johnson, has clashed repeatedly with Ms Truss over economic policy during the campaign so far.
She is pledging around £30bn in immediate tax cuts, arguing they will boost growth, while Mr Sunak has said immediate cuts could fuel already-soaring inflation.
Mr Sunak topped the MPs' ballots to qualify for the final run-off with Ms Truss, but polls currently suggest the foreign secretary is the favoured candidate of party members, who decide the leader.
It is thought a significant chunk of the 160,000 or so Tory members will vote in the coming weeks, after ballot papers are sent out in early August.
Hustings will take place throughout July and August, and the two candidates will square off in a live BBC TV debate on Monday, followed by another hosted by The Sun and TalkTV on Tuesday.

Sounds like an excuse to rule by fiat. Bloody politicians.

That's the one! YouTube hates me! Just watched the whole thing. Brian Blessed is a national treasure. Can we have him as PM?
Would save money on transport, he could converse with people on the opposite side of the planet.
Here's the full episode in decent quality

Thanks boss, need to get around to nabbing some of their HIGNFY stuff before the BBC finally manages to get them to scrub it.

When I was a teenager, I said I wanted to be Brian Blessed when I grew up. I’m an adult now and I still want to be Brian Blessed when I grow up.

I'm not going to embed it since it's a 2 hour audio book with only the first 30 or so being him, but one of my earliest Brian Blessed memories I never even realised it was him until later in life. He was Farm Giles of Ham in one of the Tolkein audiobooks. Listening to him play a more cowardly sort is a real treat.

Meanwhile for a generation of children this was their Brian Blessed they never knew was Brian Blessed.

This guy will never be PM. Quote this post and call me a faggot if I'm wrong.

He literally sounds like Blair 2.0 and I can't think of anything that is more anathema to the actual Conservative party membership.

Nope, instead we're heading for Liz fucking Truss. Who absolutely nobody wants but due to a quirk in Tory leadership rules is exactly who we have to end up with. So basically it's Teresa May again, only possibly dumber and even more awkward on the international stage. Wonderful.
