A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Nope, instead we're heading for Liz fucking Truss. Who absolutely nobody wants but due to a quirk in Tory leadership rules is exactly who we have to end up with. So basically it's Teresa May again, only possibly dumber and even more awkward on the international stage. Wonderful.

I reckon she's going to do that weird thing that some female 'leaders' do, where they try and overcompensate. We're going to get involved in some stupid war, or pissing match we really shouldn't be in.

She is absolutely going to do that. But I liken it more to those girls who never having seen physical violence or else knowing they're not the ones going to be in the fight, think it's noble or fine to create situations where the guys do. I had a girlfriend who liked to get me into fights. Seemed to turn me on. After a couple of situations that normally would have ended with normal male posturing-defusing protocols instead escalating into fists flying because of her blindness to male communication I'd had enough of her. Fit as Hell but messed in the head.

Liz Truss reminds me of her except without the Fit as Hell part.

She's out. Honestly even for Britbongs she wasn't a very high-profile figure and she's fully on-board with the whole Trans Women are Women blob of beliefs. She came a slight cropper debating Kemi Bradenoch who came after her in the role of Minister for Equalities when Mordaunt denied supporting self-id (person just declares they're a woman one day and legally is) and Kemi said she had to reverse that position when she took over. Spoiler: Kemi was telling the truth.

Kemi Badenoch is generally pretty good and in touch with what most of the Conservative supporters actually want. Mordaunt is more on the "what Twitter says people want" spectrum.

Nigel Farage, founder of UK Indepedence Party (which led to the referendum which led to Brexit) said that Kemi becoming leader of the party would be the Conservatives' only hope for re-election in the next ten years and I agree with him. Kemi, fwiw, is Black and very much of the "Black people are perfectly capable of being responsible and successful" equal opportunity school of thought, a la Clarence Thomas, Frederick Douglass, etc. She'd honestly be the best possible role-model for Black people in the UK. Sadly, she is now out of the running and I'm forced to look at the prospect of Rishi Sunak (okay imo, but a bit warlike for my tastes) and Diz Truss who will have us in WWIII before Christmas if she can. She combines the aggression of a pitbull with the vacancy of a pug and God save us all if and when she wins.

I'd be okay with that in general. Except this is foreign workers so I have some strong questions about how this will actually work. Sounds more like the USA's H1B where it becomes a tool of wage suppression.

The outspoken feminist, Kellie-Jay Keen, aka Posie Parker, was visited at her home by Wiltshire Police who were investigating claims that she had been "untoward about paedophiles" on social media.

To reiterate, an actual police officer showed up at her door because somebody had complained that she had made a statement online that might offend paedophiles. It turned out that the officer hadn't even reviewed the social media in question.

What can I say. As a nation we are worthy of your contempt.


Of course, the Wiltshire Police Twitter is now full of snark. For a while the hashtag untowardaboutpaedophiles was trending in the UK.

As opposed to male leaders dragging us into wars which has been the norm for thousands of years? You do realise that the vast majority of wars were not started by female leaders, right?

Hundreds of millions died in the 20th century due to wars, genocides and disastrous political ideologies and I'm fairly certain Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Robert Mugabe and Idi Amin, et al., were not female.

The vast majority of leaders were not female. Show me the citation that when women are leaders, they are any less warlike.
