A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I'll see your mauled singer and raise you a stabbed MP.

A Conservative MP has been stabbed multiple times in an incident at his constituency surgery and a man has been arrested.

Sir David Amess, who represents Southend West in Essex, was attacked on Friday at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

Sky News understands a man walked into his constituency surgery and stabbed him multiple times.

It is believed Mr Amess, 69, has been receiving treatment at the scene for his injuries, with a local Conservative Party source telling Sky News that an air ambulance is at the scene.

His condition is unclear, Sky News political correspondent Joe Pike reports.

Sir David has been MP for Southend West since 1997 and first entered parliament in 1983.

Essex Police wrote on Twitter: "We were called to reports of a stabbing in Eastwood Rd North shortly after 12.05pm.

"A man was arrested shortly after & we're not looking for anyone else.

"We'll bring you more info when we have it."

MPs and politicians from all parties have reacted with shock to the news.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said: "Horrific and deeply shocking news. Thinking of David, his family and his staff."

Conservative MP Michael Fabricant wrote on Twitter: "David Amess is one of the most lovely, uncontentious, caring MPs in Parliament. This is just awful."

"This is truly awful news," SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with David and his family."

Former prime minister David Cameron said: "Very alarming and worrying news reports coming from Leigh-on-Sea. My thoughts and prayers are with Sir David Amess and his family."

Are we going to find out anything about the perpetrator?

Probably not because it's a dead Tory...

A couple of threads about it now. Male, Somalian heritage, mid twenties seems to be all that is out.

While's there's plenty trying to lay it at Angela's feet I've little appetite for it whatever turns out to be the person's background. Blaming shit like this on the opposing party was bad enough with Jo Cox, no need for more of it.

Mhhh!
Sir David Amess killing was terrorist incident, say police https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-58935372
Eh, the article hedges it saying there may be a link to terrorism.
It's possible though. Also credit to Hoyle for going ahead with his own surgery as planned and all the other MPs who I'm sure have done so or will do so going forwards.

Surrey couple given fine after bus lane camera picks up 'KNITTER' design on random woman's jumper in Bath.

"We thought one of our friends was stitching us up," said Mrs Knight.
You could have chosen not to quote her BBC. You could have taken the high road.
Oh wait I forgot, you appointed someone from Huffpost. This is the new standard.

Lucky that the judge actually bothered looking at the case. I heard a story at work where someone went to traffic court and the judge told him he was wasting their time and slapped some extra fines on without even hearing him. (Could have been talking crap and he acknowledged he was in the wrong that time though...)

Let me guess, mental health claims will be cited as a factor.

“To give you an example, three out of four young people who claim PIP have their primary reason being mental ill health.

“That in itself is 189,000 young people who currently receive benefit focused on that. There may be other benefits they receive as well.

I'm pretty sure I read something that says claims have a question like "can you move 10 metres?" If those people say "yes" they're apparently being reported as fit to work. It's rather unfair for people who legitimately can't work because it's not medical experts doing the assessment, you need to appeal the decision a bunch of times before it ends up in front of an actual doctor, which the majority of people are unlikely to do.

Well, who could have seen that coming.

The older brother of the Manchester Arena suicide bomber has left the UK and there is no indication of whether he will return in time to give evidence this week to the public inquiry into the atrocity, it has emerged.

The bomber’s childhood friend Ahmed Taghdi tried to leave the country on Monday as well but was arrested, the public inquiry was told on Tuesday.

Ismail Abedi and Taghdi had been given court orders instructing them to attend the inquiry this week to answer questions about the radicalisation of Salman Abedi, who carried out the attack on 22 May 2017.

Taghdi, 29, accompanied Salman Abedi on a visit to the jailed terrorist Abdalraouf Abdallah, who experts believe groomed the bomber, and Ismail Abedi was found to have Islamic State propaganda material on his phone.

Both were arrested after the bombing that took place at the end of an Ariana Grande concert, killing 22 bystanders and injuring hundreds of others.

Ismail Abedi was given a court order warning him to attend the inquiry.
Neither man was charged with any offence and both were told they had the right not to answer any questions that may incriminate them at the public inquiry, sitting in Manchester. Ismail Abedi was not on any counter-terrorism “watchlist”, the Guardian understands.

Paul Greaney QC, addressing the inquiry’s chair, Sir John Saunders, said Ismail Abedi had refused to cooperate with the inquiry but had been ordered to attend on Thursday. However, he was no longer in the country and there was “no indication” of when he will return.

Greaney said: “As he surely must understand, if he does not do so the public may infer that he has something to hide and so, sir, may you.”

He urged Ismail Abedi to contact the inquiry directly or via his legal team.

Ismail Abedi and the bomber’s parents, who are also not cooperating with the inquiry, are believed to be in Libya.

Taghdi was told on Friday that if he did not attend the inquiry this week he would be arrested. He attempted to leave the country on Monday and as a result was arrested and is in custody.
The hearing was told that he was able to provide evidence of a return ticket to the UK on 20 October. His original destination was not disclosed.

He is now due to give evidence on Thursday, while Abdallah, currently in custody, is due to give evidence on Wednesday, both in person.

The inquiry has been told that both are key witnesses as the hearings turn to why and how Salman Abedi and his younger brother and fellow bomb plotter, Hashem Abedi, became radicalised.

If Ismail Abedi does not return to the UK to attend on Thursday “without reasonable excuse”, the chair of the inquiry has the powers to fine him or send him to prison for up to 51 weeks.

A Home Office source said officials were unhappy that Ismail Abedi had been allowed to leave the country and were trying to find out why there had not been a court order preventing his departure.

The hearing continues.
Bear in mind I used the Guardian for this, providing the most lukewarm reaction.
