A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Every year? I get a letter every other week! What is your secret?
I respond to the first letter with "Check your fucking files, I don't have a TV."
Some years that's enough. Other years, they'll send the investigation opened letter which I ignore, then the home visit letter, which I also ignore. Side note: since they changed the paper they're not even useful for lighting the fire. Envelope is though.
Had some officious prick show up twice. Dogs saw him off quick enough.

Honestly, I just ignore them. I send a cheeky picture to the other half, saying, "They're asking for my Loicense"

In horrifying nurse regarding much NHS;

They are out of money and paying nurses on the bank at the bottom band 2. A lot of bank staff replace or supplement nurses, so a bulk of their workforce. Honestly, when much NHS collapses, it frees up a ton of money.

You can't go to jail for not having a TV licence in Scotland, or at least no-one has since last century.
The people getting fines for it here are getting smaller and smaller since everyone learned you can tell the cunts to fuck off and they've got no legal rights of entry to check.
Ignore the letters, if you're in haggisland, and any cunt comes round, don't let them bully you or get a foot in the door.
Private residences are not included in the "right to roam" act, and licence fee enforcement are not exempt persons, so they're trespassing or illegally forcing entry.
Same as Bailiffs. They need signed permission from a Sheriff court. Don't know if that's different from the "Can't Pay, We'll Take it Away" lot.
The main trick I've learned from the scum I know is always speak to anyone who looks like an official there to "check your thinking" is only talk to them through the letterbox or window.
Anyway, we don't really have the polis round here. Particularly at weekends. If your crime takes less than 20mins, in public, you're ok. If you do it where no -one sees, you're never getting caught.
We've had decade long murders still unsolved, and one murder was solved after 13 years because the guy was dying and confessed. Fucking joke.
Oh, and we found out the local Primary Schools CCTV didn't work when someone started smashing windows in the car park with a golf club. He was spotted by a few parents getting there for home time, and only targeted one teachers car, so it was ok in the end.
CCTV still not fixed, though.

I don't live in the UK fulltime anymore but I keep my house there so I have someone check on it a couple of times a week. One of the other things they do is scan and email me copies of the few physical letters I get. Just before New Years I got one of those bullshit TV license ones saying something had changed and all the usual vaguely threatening shit about opening a case etc. I completely fucking ignored it obviously because, even when I'm there I don't watch telly, and they've been told as much, repeatedly. Funny thing is I got another letter a few weeks ago saying they were going to come out to conduct an investigation on the 16th of Jan. Only problem is that letter didn't even turn until sometime between the 23rd - 25th, and I know they didn't turn up on the day because the person who watches the place also has access to my doorbell cameras so they'd have known.

Honestly TV licensing are the absolute fucking worst cunts to deal with. I remember after my mum died and I was getting all the bills and utilities and shit sorted everyone else let me do it over the phone, usually with a specialist bereavement team designed to make it as painless as possible. Not those bellends, only way I could find to tell them was to physically mail them a letter which I did at least 3 times in an effort to get them to finally fuck off.

That's the same in the rest of the country. The TV license "inspectors" (minimum wage capita employees who didn't have the brains to get a job as an amazon delivery driver) have no legal right of entry and can only force entry if they have a warrant, which they will almost never be able to get. They rely on ignorance and fear to gain entry and then refuse to leave until they've got your payment details.

Read the letters carefully next time. At no point does it ever categorically state that you will be prosecuted. It repeats the basic summary of the law, that receiving broadcasts without a license is an offence that can carry a fine, but it never directly accuses you. When they send the investigation letters, it's not an investigation into you, it's just a general "an investigation has been started", designed to trick you into believing that they're investigating you. They aren't investigating anybody. They use a lot of formal and passive language. decorated with official-looking identifier codes and "enforcement approved" stamps with faked signatures, designed to create a feeling of imminent danger, and then offer you an easy way to make the stress disappear: just pay up.

It's a shake-down; an officially sanctioned version of "nice looking house you have here, be shame if something happened to it". The entire thing, visits, letters and all, is a carefully crafted psychological terror campaign, designed to wear you down until you pay up out of fear or desperation to make it all stop. Their power completely disappears if you ignore them.

The UK doesn’t have a free press either.
I wish Jap manga Tankoban printing took off in Europe ( I know French/Belgian bandes dessinées is still very popular ). Manga was made using the cheapest grade of paper you get in order to maximize the amount of pages you could get per book. If you just kept the colours as black and white and incorporated some modern techniques to reduce ink use you might have a very viable way to distribute stuff without being at the mercy of online platforms or social media. My local pub has a nook in the far corner where people can drop off books they're not using anymore and you find some interesting things sometimes.

At one point in my life, I lived in a flat for over four years and saved every threatening letter from the licensing people (I did not have a television). When I moved out, I marked every single envelope Return to Sender and popped them all in the nearest postbox.

So nobody will volunteer to do bank shifts, and they'll end up using agency staff instead and paying through the nose. This is a stupid policy that will cost them a lot of money.

And lead to more incompetence. Though I'm not sure they could get any worse than they are. Wife had to go back for bloods today because the nurse that took them yesterday forgot to put a label on them, after telling her that she was too thin to have the issue she's being assessed for. Nurse was a fat fuck, for the record.

Based! Bedpan changing fat girls who are nothing but mattresses for the men who do the work are crying.

Suffah! The white man can try a bit of dark meat and maybe you should have tried a bit harder at school. Enjoy what you and your unions voted for.

Well, here is the kicker: the NHS does not use agency but moved to using NHP and the bank portion of NHP. They are spiting themselves and pushing to hire only foreigners, but they will essentially be trapped in the same loop. So a few more things are looming for the NHS too.
  • I have heard many mumblings from various levels of management that the NHS is thinking about abolishing nursing students. This leads me to think they are fast approaching the private model. This has escalated in the last few months.
  • I have seen a huge uptick in specialist nurses leaving along with doctors clearing wards, and guess what we have hardly any specialists or doctors coming.
Even if they shift to a private model, they are still fucked because they cannot hold staffing preparation to shifting, and they cannot alter their pay either because economically, 1.2 million staff suddenly getting American-level wages would cause a massive shift. This with councils going down is going to be a great laugh.

So what I can let you know is that the NHS is massively moving over to sponsorships of foreign workers to come over and work in the UK. The vast majority of which are not registered as nurses, careers, etc. They are simply paid to come over for a while on these sponsorships to do the most basic of basic jobs within the NHS like work in care homes and push wheel chairs around in hospitals. We are not getting these foreign nurses as most of them either do not meet our requirements and are rejected or they go to country's that pay more then we do.

The sponsorship system for foreign workers is the final death nail in the NHS as we flood in more and more highly unskilled work into the UK who only do it due to the fact it pays incredibly well for what it is, it's very low skilled so any member of darkest Africa could qualify but that it helps them bulk out their visa so that they can attempt to stay permanently.

If you've ever wondered why were suddenly seeing more and more dead old people in care homes then this is why. The NHS sponsorship program will be what truly kills the NHS.

Absolutely, and what is worse, the NHS is in the position of being unable to pay for the sponsorships now because of the immigration costs. There was a halt of it in late 2023 and 2024 when they realized so many were underskilled and could not speak English, and as @A-Logato wonderfully surmised, they sequestered them in care homes and psych wards. The truth is the NHS is so crippled it cannot afford to pay HCAs and band 5 nurses their bulk force because they refuse to address the world that they are over.

I explained to the other half that this is out of sheer ego because it confesses the collapse of a worshipped social system. The economic ramifications firsthand will be disastrous before the investors gather like vultures giving shit deals because they can. It will also mean Starmer would ultimately have to resign because Labour will all turn in on each other very fast. It also would hit the Tories hard as they would be blamed for it too, meaning Reform would have a larger voter base, and that kind of failure permeates until an election. It is like Poll Tax riots x 9/11 for Labour and one of the biggest failings in UK history. It is only a matter of time; it costs almost half our GDP for a bunch of blacks to inanely wander about whilst the rats leave the ship. The public largely refuses to admit it is over out of cope and indoctrination, whilst the enlightened are just waiting for the axe to drop.

I think 2025 is the year of its ever-so-needed demise.

I left the NHS a few years ago now, and of course there were plenty of Filipinos, Poles etc. But a year or so before I left I noticed the amount of sandnogs and regular nogs quadrupled. My department went from one token darkie to literally every new hire being carted over by the NHS from some shithole abroad. I wouldn’t even care that much if they were actually decent. But they were all woefully incompetent - they barely knew how to do simple procedures, practically being taught how to do their job they were already allegedly qualified to do while in the middle of actual procedures - and all the British workers were having to pick up their slack on top of being paid like shit and overworked. It sounds like hyperbole but it was honestly maddening.

The foreign workers who’d already been there for ages were genuinely sound, hard workers, but the new desperately mass-hired wave was just dire. The middle eastern hires treated all the women like shit and were arrogant as fuck, and the African ones were unhygienic and lazy. I remember one time I was sat in a clinical room waiting for a patient with a recent African hire and the cunt was just biting off his fingernails and spitting them on the floor. Thankfully I’m in pretty good health aside from the odd GP appointment, but I fully expect to be irradiated to death during an X-ray or have chewing gum stuck under my stitches next time I need to pop to my local A&E.

I dread to think how shoddily the place is being ran nowadays, considering my department was already under investigation shortly before I left. Higher ups were coming down hard for us not meeting certain targets and quotas - as it turns out, our department and trust as a whole didn’t even have the resources or funds for us to meet said targets. If my (pretty key) department was barely able to function at a base level a few years ago, I have to wonder what the future will be like.
