A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

There are corrupt networks and avenues for most high-profile politicians after they retire from politics, especially among the Tories, who often become massive grifters and criticize everything wrong with the country—even though they or their party may have been in power for over a decade. Well, I suppose we could all just move to America or Australia, right?

Speaking of upcoming trials the airport brothers appeared in court, entered no pleas then did a press release via their lawyer where they insisted upon their innocence. Interestingly is the thing that saw the police being called. They claimed that altercation was because their mother was subject to racist abuse, something the press ran with. Wonder what the name was of who they attacked?
Two brothers have appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged altercation with police at Manchester Airport. Video footage of an alleged incident involving police officers and members of the public in July last year.

In December the Crown Prosecution Service announced it had authorised the charging of two men.

Mohammed Fahir Amaaz, 20, from Rochdale, was charged with two counts of causing actual bodily harm; one count of assaulting an emergency worker; and one of common assault.

Muhammad Amaad, 25, also from Rochdale, was charged with one count of causing actual bodily harm.

The men, both wearing grey suits, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Thursday morning (January 16). They made no indication of pleas to the series of charges put to them during the 10-minute hearing.

Mohammed Amaaz, of Tarnside Close in Rochdale, is charged with assaulting a member of the public, named in court documents as Abdulkareem Hamzah Abbas Ismaeil, by beating him on July 23, 2024, at Manchester Airport.

He also faces a second charge that he assaulted PC Zachary Marsden causing actual bodily harm on the same date, also at Manchester Airport.

A third charge alleges he assaulted PC Lydia Ward - named in court documents - causing actual bodily harm on the same at the airport. A fourth charge against him alleges he assaulted, by beating, an emergency worker, PC Ellie Cook, also named in court documents.

His co defendant Muhammad Amaad, also of Tarnside Close in Rochdale, faces a single charge, namely that he assaulted PC Zachary Marsden at Manchester Airport on July 23.

At the conclusion of the brief hearing, District Judge James Hatton addressed the defendants and noted neither had made any indication of plea. He adjourned the case until February 13 when the pair will re-appear at Liverpool Crown Court.

After the hearing, the brothers' lawyer Robbie Cole delivered a statement as the pair stood behind him on the steps of the court. He said of his clients: "They both appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court this morning. There was no indication of pleas at this stage, but our clients vehemently deny the allegations. Imran Khan KC has been instructed as senior counsel for the defence. At proceedings are live it would be inappropriate to comment further."

The story I heard was they were acting like typical Mohammed enjoyers and causing problems with people all over the airport.

Given the amount of Norf FC dads with their families at the airport they’re lucky it was just the police who gave them a kicking. Fat Baz might have killed them.

That was truly one of the most pathetic things I've ever witnessed.
To be in her late twenties and just realised that life is hard, you have to work for anything that is worthwhile, but contiually moaning about how it's not handed to her on a plate and to want to broadcast it to the world.

For me I was going to go to Australia because the quality of life is way higher and I just love Australians however sneaking an American spouse over there is not so easy but not fair on their family either. It would be very selfish of me but the digital ID thing for me is a countdown clock because this shit will be weaponized right from the gate. The plus side is it will be a few years yet and the services in question are on their knees. They are trying to replace it with AI but don't realize the problems that will entail politically or economically for them, also AI is very far from being that good it is mostly a creative engine at the moment.
 
I do hate that 'moving to Australia' has become the new thing for young people. If you're an uneducated, unmotivated spastic who has no direction in life, moving to Australia on a 3 year temp visa picking cotton is not going to fix that.

The reality is that unless you're moving for a positive reason, you'll still face all the same problems in Australia that you claim to face in the UK. Plus there's a certain irony in complaining about how the UK is finished because of all these unskilled immigrants whilst doing the same thing to another country. No you aren't an 'expat' you're an unskilled economic migrant.

This pisses me the fuck off more than anything. If he was so great then why did you leave the whole country behind, prick. I think there is an air of 'Australia are our colonial subjects so they should be glad to have us' mentality which winds me up more than anything.

Quick edit to add that 'White Australia' is still such a recent policy that my parents still remember when it was abolished. We need to be bringing that back, and removing any European country from the list.

I finally bite the bullet and sorted out a foreign passport and immigration papers in Eastern Europe since I qualified for citizenship through descent. The digital ID thing is yet another reason why I want out of this place. It's not getting any better and going from what COVID was like and the whole track and trace system, way too many people went along with it and they will with digital ID's.
 
I hate all Australians as they’re a bunch of inbred criminals who cheat at cricket. Should I start planning to move there now?

I would move to New Zealand but they’re all really faggy and all those sheep might start making me feel some unnatural desires.
 
See that is why I love Australians their flagrant racism I honestly find charming, we can all hate Abos together, see I would move to Lord of the rings land in a heartbeat but I remember vividly a long conversation I had with a conservative woman who left NZ because all the woke shit plus their economy is literally hell.
