A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas is the grimmest Christmas album the UK has ever seen. No, not because of the subject matter. But when you find out that nearly all the money they raised went into the pockets of African warlords. There's a black Christmas pill for people to swallow.
Bob Geldof is a piece of shit. He was outright told up front that was exactly what was going to happen and he did it anyway, and bullied other people into participating in it at the risk of being seen as some kind of heartless bastard. If nearly anyone else had been handling it, at least SOME of the money would have gone to actual relief efforts instead of this dippy brainless feel-good scam to make Geldof look like some kind of hero instead of the dumb asshole he is.

Also the song itself sucked. Why the fuck would most Africans even care whether it was Christmas?

Also the Boomtown Rats blew on top of that. They had what, one good song, ever?

Never mind he raised his daughter so well she turned out a junkie and OD'd and died.

Just what an absolute empty suit of a man.

Charities that I have dealt with in the past have said perhaps 10 - 20 % of the money raised ended up in the right hands.

That was when I stopped giving to large charities.

Charities should just be fucking banned at this point.
Things like local food banks are usually pretty good and if you're donating after some disaster, do NOT donate to the big ones like Red Cross that already have plenty of funding and collect money on disasters while then spending it on something else. After 9/11 they had a huge blood drive and then threw most of it away because they had no way to store that much.

Utterly worthless organization.

I knew very little of what you said about the guy himself. Or that his daughter became a junkie and died. That he was warned in advance what would happen is a fucking travesty on his part. I didn't know that. The events themselves are mostly before my time.

I'm guessing Tell Me Why (I Don't Like Mondays)? The song about the school shooter that the killer herself wrote to him thanking him for writing it?

The Tori Amos cover of it is vastly superior, imo. If it's something else you meant, I'm not sure what.

I'm pretty careful about what charities I give to these days and try to focus on smaller ones. The grift with many of them is depressing.

EDIT: Jesus, I just read about her. He made her go to school the day after her mum died. Fucking Hell.

Yes, exactly that.

Also here's the in-depth article on Bob Geldof's fuckery.

Yes it's from the Grauniad but for a leftie outlet to completely trash a darling like Geldof just shows how badly he fucked up.

The only thing he did well was his role in Pink Floyd's The Wall and even that is overrated and the double LP soundtrack album is maybe the worst Floyd album ever.

Local charities only.

Also if you're a computer game developer: Make sure to use their gay red plus sign as the health symbol.

I think the fact the petition slowed to a crawl from a bit before 11pm, more or less died over night, and is only starting to pick up momentum again now, is another big sign that it's mostly genuine and not a brigade generated by Elon. Though, obviously, that won't matter if the media go all out saying it's fake.

Oh they'll definitely begin the slimy "a petition has reached nearly 2M signatures, but in this age of misinformation can we really rely on these metrics?"

Well we've passed two-million now. And it's over 5% in multiple consituencies. I welcome Kier Starmer, the farmer harmer, attempting to declare this is fake bots. Nobody will believe him. Right now, he's probably trying to figure out how to write Javascript that'll submit a fake petition so that he can point at it and say "See!"

It‘s getting trashed on Mumsnet too, I can’t stand how terminally literal they are about politics over there. Obviously this isn’t actually going to lead to another GE but it does a good, if ultimately fruitless, job of illustrating how fed up the public are even after just a few months and is another public embarrassment for the gov to add to the pile.

Mumsnet's weird. It's absolutely full of terfs, but for an awful lot of the women there, that tends to be as far as it goes in terms of seeing through bullshit. Though I do think there are a lot of women there that just don't bother arguing with them when it comes to anything else right-wing. Take the recent thread by an American who wonders if she should fire her hairdresser for voting Trump. There was some push back but most of the thread was, Trump's a racist rapist I could never be friends with his supporters. Or all the posts castigating him for being a dangerous narcissist in how he reacted in the literal minute after he was shot.

Though I have just remembered a thread from when Starmer took over the Labour party, a lot of the posters were hot for him, so maybe there's that.

There's a certain kind of person who is attracted to sociopathic cunts with shiny faces. Maybe they think they can fix him?
