A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

It's at 545,000 now. Which is over the threshold of the government being required to respond. I recall these petitions used to say "must be debated in parliament" but they seem to have changed the wording. Boo!
Because it would be very funny.
Yes. But also very embarrassing for Kier Stalin.

Doesn't it cost the taxpayer money to run a general election? And for what? The result is not going to be substantially different from what it was in July
The money question is a non-issue because it's not going to happen. But there is a positive in showing the growing discontent with the govt. in a clear way. The petition was created 24 days ago. There's a long lead in stage with petitions on the government site and it's now gathering momentum. It's gone up to 559,000 in the last ten minutes since I clicked reply on this post and then came back to it. Which is crazy so I presume there's some kind of periodic updates in which it goes in jumps, but even so...

Anyway, I think the result would be significantly different. The British public jumped from the frying pan into the fire. They now know that the fire is hot.

If we were to have another general election I could see if just devolving into a hung parliament. The Tories would gain back some but not a lot of it's vote share and the Labour super majority would implode with a fair amount of their voters jumping ship to the Lib dems. I honestly don't see reform going any where, besides the fact that first past the post keeps them out by design. Reform has done a lot to piss off their voting base as of late and a party that already splits the right wing vote could be split yet again between Reform and to a lesser extent Ukip.

In regards to the recent bomb threats at chester, birmingham, edinburgh and London, I will have to tap the sign:

"THEY DO NOT WANT YOU TO TRAVEL".

It's coming up to holiday season and the bomb 'threats' will be a psy-op to plant the seed of fear in the minds of the masses. If they can dissuade as many people as possible from leaving the country they A) own your mind, and B) stop you from seeing how good it can be outside of the UK.

The threats, errors, bankruptcy, IT glitches, strikes, crashes, maintenance issues and terrorist attacks will ramp up heading towards Christmas, just as it has done every year since COVID.

Votes are now over 800.000. Labours obviously going to address this in parliament with a quick "no" or some variant of that with the usual "We have to make some unpopular decisions" BS they seem to like rolling out every time they get criticism but it's still funny to see just how unpopular these tossers really are.

As much as I always enjoy your posts, I cannot let you claim David Hume for the English. We might be a small nation, but we remain very proud of the Scottish Enlightenment.
A very autistic powerlevel: In my teens I once forced my mother to help me search for Adam Smith's grave on the Royal Mile, so I could take a picture with it.

Christ Labour have had the week from hell; record unpopularity now making him the most unpopular PM in UK history. Reeves exposed and growing pressure to leave, Starmer being found to be talking with China. The Farmer protest and him casually announcing Blackrock are at our doors whilst being increasingly ousted by European leaders. Not only that the Southport shit about to kick off at any point and a swathe of fake terror attempts with dozens of daily stabbings.

I am fairly young but I cannot recall a worse week, there are probably some like 9/11 but honestly those are different, once in a decade moments. He is going to try and hide Reeves away similar to Kamala Harris but it won't work her role is too important.

It's about on par with the constant sleaze stories at the tail end of Major's government, with the cash for questions scandal being the peak of it, but it had taken the tories 15 years to reach that level of popular mistrust and open derision for the plebs.

Have we had the equivalent of the Poll Tax and Black Wednesday yet?

IMO there won't be any single equivalent of the poll tax, but all the new taxes they're laying on everyone will likely have the same effect in aggregate.
