A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Losing the PM to a scandal of that magnitude will openly fracture the party, and if he goes down the fallout will almost certainly take others with him. Reeves for sure, because she's got a slow-burning scandal of her own to contend with in the shape of lying about her qualifications, which will tie into the overall perception of corruption and deception that would grow out of Starmer's scandal. The slapper might take the opportunity to turn on him for a chance at number 10, but she's also closely tied her fortunes to his, so there's an outside chance she'll go down with him if she can't distance herself fast enough.

If this really has legs, I'd look out for people trying to establish a clear space between themselves and Starmer in the next couple of weeks. Streeting is definitely on the other side of the fence already; he's vocally opposed the assisted dying bill, which is one of starmer's and rayner's pet projects, and found himself in hot water over it.

If Starmer does go down, whoever eventually takes the leadership will almost certainly face defections to the liberals or to independence, a no-confidence vote supported by one or more of the internal factions, and a thrashing at the election if that vote passes.
I'm fairly sure Starmer is out. Reeves is certainly out as is most of his close cabal.

Rayner will step in but that is just a shitshow in waiting. Her political allies are all mentally incompetent union picks.

Trying not to power level, but an old family friend was at the BoE while Reeves ( and Jeremy Hunt) were there. He considered them both very incompetent cunts.

He also as an actual economics professor, explained how the BoE thought about challenges that were presented to them .

The BoE would think in very narrow vertical channels. A person, or a two or 3 group team would think about a challenge in an up and down manner, they would rarely ask the opinion of someone thinking about something else, they would not share ideas or cross pollinate as he would say. The ideas would be presented to a governance board and the board would then decide which had merit. It was only after a Governance meeting that ideas would be allowed to be shared.
Seems odd to me coming from an oil and gas background where no idea was stupid.

I was not aware that Reeves was a Bank of Scotland telephone complaints bod.

It is literally against the law to hand your kid fags and booze because it is known to severely harm their development.
Isn't drinking alcohol as a child so long as it's within a private residence legal? I could've sworn that was how it worked.
British political philosophy stood out in opposition to the continent in valuing personal liberties.
What happened is that our institutions rejected anglo philosophy in favour of continental philosophy, because it appeals to midwits and wannabe tyrants.
Slopshow 5
I will not hear any slander against Babylon 5.
Who's planning on leaving the UK?
I'd like to, but I've got no real qualifiations or skills that I can leverage and I'm only making £1/hr above minumum wage so I don't really have a good way out of this godforsaken shithole.

Save more.
I know an Irishman that lives in Shipka that makes 1/3 of UK min wage.

Are you fit? can you labour?

He is building his own house. He earns money by helping me out and I pay him at UK rates.

He also got a set of vellux windows that I didn't use.

He also works for the guy that maintains the Electricity Windmills on the hills, and he clears debris from the solar farms around the village.

If you want it, you can have it.

The irony of talking about doing unskilled labour in Bulgaria is that most of the agency staff in my department at work are Bulgarians who came to England to do it.

And I can labour, but I'm not fit nor am I particularly good at it.

neither is he.

But when I have an afternoon free I dont mind heading over to help him dig a trench or prep some brickwork.

The point is, if there is willing there is always a way.

The joke ( actually reality ) is that all the good tradesmen from Bulgaria are in England or Germany.

It took me nearly a year to find a tiler that I would use.

He did a superb job. He was hired to do the exterior patios, but did such a great job I had him do the bathrooms.

Thrashing to whom, though? Would people really vote Tories again?

I'm sleepy as hell and therefore borderline drunk posting, but I can just say that in hindsight its the most stereotypically thing ever that the "British News Megathread" started off as people bitching about Greggs going vegan for their sausage roll?

It wouldn't require many votes to swing a whole bunch of constituencies. Labour's majorities are razor thin all over and they only got them because of apathy, on a reduced overall turnout, but they're acting as if those majorities are not only solid but unassailable. A scandal of the sort that brings down a PM and his senior leadership is more than enough to energise opposition voters, while demoralising supporters, and enough will want to go back to the devil they know rather than to allow labour to continue Starmer's destructive policies.

If it happens, if course.

They charged Mike Amesbury by the way.
MP Mike Amesbury has been charged with assault after a video appeared to show him punching a man to the ground in the street.
The charge against the 55-year-old, who has been suspended from the Labour party, relates to reports of an assault on a 45-year-old man in Frodsham, Cheshire, at just after 02:45 BST on 26 October.
The MP will appear in court at a later date to be formally charged with common assault.
Mr Amesbury confirmed he had been told to appear in court after the "deeply regrettable" incident.

The Runcorn and Helsby MP said he was continuing to cooperate with police and he could not comment further "given this is an ongoing case".
The date and venue of his first appearance has not yet been confirmed.
Mr Amesbury volunteered to be interviewed under police caution after reports of an assault on Main Street in the town.
Cheshire Police investigated the complaint and submitted a file for prosecutors to review on 29 October.
Rosemary Ainslie of the CPS said it was "extremely important that there should be no reporting commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings".
"The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial," she added.
Mr Amesbury won his seat with a majority of 14,696 in his Cheshire constituency at the July general election.
He served as a Labour MP since 2017 until his suspension, and was a shadow minister between 2018 and 2024.
Another Labour one who will no doubt be found not guilty by reasons of "the peasants had it coming."

They only began offering a vegan sausage roll, they still had the normal one.

Mate, it sounds unironically ideal. I would love to move to Bulgaria. I have fallen in love with the place and the people. Real smell freedom in the country.

I have the recording fed, you were being racist in that greggs. I was right to kick you out. Bigot.
If Jay Z can use that word on his albums and earn millions from it I should be able to shout it at Greggs staff. It’s one rule for the rich and one rule for the poor.

I've been skiing about five times in Bulgaria. It's cheap but not as good as France. Also you have to speak Bulgarian and deal with Bulgarians which might not be as fun as you think.

I found a Youtube channel recently, https://www.youtube.com/@TruthHurts101UK. It's a citizen journalist who exposes hotels being commandeered by the Home Office for illegals and just records the goings-on.

It's seriously fucking bleak viewing material. Endless smug, designer-clothes-wearing Africans and middle-easterners getting chauffeured to one free hotel after the other, guarded by the same smug, barely-English-speaking tossers who have been clearly taken off the boat themselves and handed an SIA to work as security guards. Meanwhile the (mostly) English hotel staff sheepishly hide their faces from the camera, knowing full well what they're complicit in. And enforced by police officers that are either "Just putting on me uniform and doing me job, mate", or are foreigners themselves.

The youtuber is a brave man and deserves more attention and support.

Nothing new, just the police supporting Hamas.
A serving police office in South West England has been arrested on suspicion of supporting the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The officer, a constable aged in his thirties, was arrested on Tuesday in Gloucestershire by counterterrorism police, who said the suspected support "relates to activity online".
He has been taken to a police custody unit outside Gloucestershire.
Specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South West (CTPSW) made the arrest on a property in Gloucester, and also searched a vehicle and address in the area, police said.
Gloucestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable Arman Mathieson said the searches aimed to find digital devices for analysis.
“The arrest of a serving officer on suspicion of such a serious offence will no doubt cause our communities concern, as it does everyone who works for Gloucestershire Police," he added.
“The arrest has been made to allow for a prompt and effective investigation to take place and we must not draw any conclusions at this stage.”
It's an offence under section 12 of the Terrorism Act to provide support for a proscribed terrorist group.
Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah, more commonly known as Hamas, has ruled Gaza since 2007. It was proscribed in its entirety in the UK in 2021.
The group was responsible for the 7 October 2023 attacks, which saw hundreds of gunmen enter southern Israel. About 1,200 people were killed and 251 others taken hostage.
Israel retaliated by launching a military campaign to destroy Hamas, during which more than 43,400 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
A week after the 7 October attacks, the government's independent reviewer of terrorism warned speeches at pro-Palestinian rallies in the UK might have glorified terrorism.
"People need to know, if you glorify that you risk committing a really serious terrorism offence," Jonathan Hall KC said at the time.
Then-home secretary Suella Braverman also said "the full force of the law" should be used against support for Hamas.
Members of the Conservative government urged the Metropolitan Police to increase patrols, claiming people were "glorifying the terrorist activities of Hamas".
In April this year, a man was found guilty of wearing a headband in support of Hamas at a pro-Palestinian rally in central London.
Surely there must be serious penalties for a serving officer doing that-
A police officer has been sentenced for sharing images which showed support for Hamas, a proscribed organisation.

Mohammed Adil, 26, from Bradford, was sentenced today to an 18-month community order and 160 hours of unpaid work, for two terrorism offences.

Adil pleaded guilty to sharing two images, and associated text, which showed support for a Hamas when he appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court last month.

Adil was a serving police officer with West Yorkshire Police when the offences were committed in October and November 2023.

He was initially reported by two colleagues before the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigated the offence and referred the case to the CPS for a charging decision.

Bethan David, Head of the Crown Prosecution Service’s Counter Terrorism Division, said: “Mohammed Adil understood that in sharing the images he did, it would arouse suspicion that he was showing support for a terrorist organisation.

“The CPS will not hesitate to work with the IOPC and police to prosecute these offences, regardless of the perpetrator's position.”

  • He pleaded guilty to both charges at Westminster Magistrates Court on May 2.
  • He has been sentenced to an 18 month Community Order with the following conditions: Up to 35 days Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, 160 hours of unpaid work, forfeiture or destruction of phone, £85 costs and £114 victim surcharge to be paid within 28 days

Sure. Sounds about right. Let's check in with the Lib Dems. Ties to children being sexual abused again? No surprises there.
The leader of the Liberal Democrats has said his party's Welsh leader should reflect on her position over her handling of a sexual abuse case when she worked for the Church of England.
A 2021 report found Jane Dodds, who is in charge of the Welsh Lib Dems, made a "grave error of judgement" by not organising a meeting to discuss a particular case of abuse by a late former bishop who sexually abused at least 18 victims over a 15-year period.
Dodds has accepted there were "shortcomings", but said she would continue as leader.
Sir Ed Davey, when asked whether she should stand down, said she needed to "reflect on this very carefully" and "think about what else she may need to do".
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20g8nz563eo

It comes after the Archbishop of Canterbury resigned over his failure to report prolific child abuser John Smyth.
Dodds was accused of failing to arrange a meeting about the abuse of a person highlighted in the report, A Betrayal of Trust, external, published in 2021, which found the late Hubert Victor Whitsey, former Bishop of Chester, who died in 1987, committed "appalling acts" against children, teenagers and vulnerable adults between 1966 and 1981.

Davey told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg: "I accept that she has apologised, but this is such a serious issue, so I think she does need to think about what else she may need to do.
"I've made my feelings really clear to her about what I think she should do and I think she's reflecting. I hope she does."
After Davey's comments, Dodds, the only Welsh Liberal Democrat Member of the Senedd, said the party's Welsh board had confidence in her leadership.
She said she would "continue fighting for the people of Wales" as the party's Welsh leader.
Dodds said she "accepted at the time that there were shortcomings in organising meetings about this case" and "acknowledged" them in the report.
"I have made child protection my life’s work, having worked in the field for over 20 years prior to entering politics," she added.
"I whole-heartedly apologise to the victims for the delays that this contributed to."
In a separate interview on BBC Radio Wales' Sunday Supplement, before Davey's interview, Dodds said she did not know who had been briefing Nation Cymru, external, which reported "Welsh Liberal Democrats who are antagonistic towards Ms Dodds have only just become aware" of her involvement in the report.
Tim Sly, president of the Welsh Lib Dems, said the board had expressed its "complete confidence" in Dodds as leader and considered the matter closed.
Peter Black, who was a long-standing Lib Dem member of the Welsh assembly (now the Senedd), and is now a Swansea councillor, criticised Davey.
Black posted on X that Davey's comments were "very unhelpful".
"It is clear he has not read the report, but regardless, this is a matter for the Welsh party, not him," he wrote.
"There are other ways he can express his view without contributing to a media witch hunt."

*Disgenic traitors and invaders offloading furniture: "Common mate, help us out."
The absolute gall of that uppity bitch going on about "I don't consent to being filmed" as if her own countrymen and community consent to what she's helping to do. There'll probably be a "sexual emergency" or two in that batch that some poor local woman or girl won't consent to.
